Rating: Summary: Excellence in the spirit of LEFT BEHIND and SCREWTAPE LETTER Review: I have followed Randy Alcorn quite well--I was first introduced to his writing four years ago and have been hooked ever since. His writing exhibits quality--plot, characterization, suspense, and richer content (which I happend to prefer in fiction--without being academic.) While the content and plot are quite different, I would compare the QUALITY of his writing to that of Grisham and Jenkins/LaHaye. Others might also be familiar with Frank Peretti (THIS PRESENT DARKNESS). The final comparison that Randy himself makes, and I would concur, is with C.S. Lewis and THE SCREWTAPE LETTERS. With all due respect to Mr. Lewis, I enjoyed this title considerably more. C.S. Lewis has always been a bit too "heady" for me, and Randy writes more in the venacular. Also, Randy includes BRIEF contemporary narrative before each letter (from Lord Foulgrin--to his junior demon.)A first-class gripping must-read!
Rating: Summary: Be aware Review: I just received this book and I'm only on chapter 4 and I am appauled as to how direct the scenarios are. As a christian I can see where strengthening my christianity should be my first priority in life. It proves just how devious and strong the devil is and how strong his hatred is against God and his followers. This book was recommended by Tim LaHaye and I am so happy I'm being exposed to the truth.
Rating: Summary: "Screwtape" for the new millenium Review: I originally had no intention of buying this book, first because it looked like a blatant rip-off of C.S. Lewis' classic "The Screwtape Letters", and second because I was not too crazy about a previous novel written by this author. After looking at the book in a Christian bookstore, I saw it was in a little different format than "Screwtape", plus it was a very attractive book to look at, so I took the bait. And, Randy Alcorn, if you're reading this review, I repent of my previous attitude, because this book is a winner in every way. Unlike "Screwtape", "Lord Foulgrin's Letters" alternates between the correspondence from Foulgrin to his apprentice demon, Squaltaint, and the earthly activities of Jordan Fletcher, the human to which Squaltaint has been assigned. In the beginning, I wondered why someone as spiritually bankrupt as Jordan Fletcher even needed his own personal tempter (I guess that's why an underling was assigned the job), but soon enough, despite Squaltaint's best efforts and Foulgrin's best advice, Jordan begins to move toward a greater spiritual awareness, thanks to the witness of one of the friends with whom he plays basketball regularly. In Foulgrin's correspondence, the author covers all the bases as far as the tricks of the devil are concerned. In giving a glimpse into the spiritual realm, the book reminds me a little bit of Frank Peretti's novels. But the practicality of this book makes it far more valuable than your average work of fiction, for it increases awareness of the traps that Satan's henchmen can put in one's path. Plus, there are some interesting twists at the end. All in all, a stellar effort.

Rating: Summary: An interesting homage to C S Lewis Review: I really enjoyed this book. Of course the concept has been "borrowed" from CS Lewis' "The Screwtape Letters". (But the author freely admits this.) But it is a nice tribute to the Screwtape Letters because it is finely written, and engaging. In fact, once I started reading it, I literally could not put it down. I think the real strength of the book is the way that Alcorn shifts settings back and forth from one chapter to the next between the spiritual realm and the material realm. The important theme of this is that the spirit world is as real as the world in which we live, and influences it as well. In a day of scientific materialism, which denies anything spiritual(and this attitude exists in the church, too) Alcorn's book is an important, as well as thought provoking, reminder, that spiritual warfare is real. Thanks Randy, for writing this book.
Rating: Summary: wonderful Review: I really liked this book. Its entertaining, funny, well written, warm, and you'll learn a lot in the process. I've read one Randy Alcorn book before this but it was a non fiction book, "Money, Possessions, and Eternity." I was impressed so I felt compelled to pick up a fiction book and I'm not disappointed. I didn't really get into the Screwtape letters by Lewis, so I was happy to read a book that was similar in a way, but readable. A lot of us tend to not take the devil seriously, even Christians, and this book just puts into perspective how much their out to get Christians and destroy their families in the process. I'd recommend it. I also learned so much than from other Christian fiction books.
Rating: Summary: Excellent! Review: I was a little hesitant to read this book, but I am glad I did. The writing is engaging, interesting and without question will get you thinking. I would heartily recommend this book to any Christian.
Rating: Summary: Lord Foulgrin's Letters Review: I would recommend this book to any christian that doesn't understand how they are distracted from God's word by so many things in our lives. I have bought two copies of the book and one copy of the audio cassette. If you want to be able to recognize the devil when he tries to lead you astray,so as to crush him beneath your feet, please read this book. I have been in the church my entire life, both playing church and having a real relationship with God, and this book has helped me more than any sermon had ever helped me to focus on God's Word and to be able to focus on sermons without being distracted by the flaws in the church!!! (Modern "Screw Tape Letters", C.S.Lewis" God Is Good!!!
Rating: Summary: If I could, I'd give it 10 stars! Review: I've ready all of Randy Alcorn's books, and have repeatedly gone back to reread "Deadline" and "Dominion" over and over again. He has always written with such authority on the subject of heaven and hell, which tells me that he has great insight into what the Bible says about this subject. "Lord Foulgrin's Letters" was another outstanding work done by an author who has become one of my all-time favorite of Christian authors. His point of view when writing as Lord Foulgrin was sometimes chilling, yet totally believable, and has served as a reminder that the demons only goal is to destroy us and discredit us before God. Although this is a work of fiction, I liked the fact that Mr. Alcorn continually quoted Scripture, in its context, throughout the story, letting us know that Satan and the demons know Scripture too (maybe sometimes better than some of us Christians). I look forward to his next work, and because of his track record, I'm certain it will be captivating and enthralling just like his previous works. Don't ever quit writing, Mr. Alcorn!
Rating: Summary: And the Beat Goes On Review: If Mr. C.S. Lewis was still here in his clay earth suit, I believe he would say to Mr. Randy Alcorn, "Very well done, little brother." Randy Alcorn's latest work, Lord Foulgrin's Letters, is excellent. It's been a wake up call to me that the battlefield all around me is as active as ever. I feel it is a must for every Christian. I have gained so much from each of Randy Alcorn's books. Deadline was my first exposure to Mr. Alcorn's literary gift. Then, its sequel Dominion was my good fortune to read. Both were checkouts from the library, but now I am the proud owner of Deadline which I just finished reading for the second time. Would like to reread Dominion also. I am captivated by this wonderful author's descriptions of heaven. Even if they are not totally accurate as none of us will know till we've been there, he has expanded my imagination of heaven and in wonderful hope. God's Word says that eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor has it entered into the heart (or imagination) of man what He has prepared for those that love Him. In other words, in our wildest, most colorful and creative imagnations, what any of us imagines is just a dim picture compared to the actuality of it. Also, God's Word says we (believers) have the mind of Christ. If this be so (and it must be if He said it), then is it not likely that some inkling of what it is like has come into the mind of our brother, Randy Alcorn. I believe so. Mr. Alcorn, please keep your heart and imagination open to Christ so He can speak to us through your work and ministry. P.S. Edge of Eternity is just a sixstar book.
