Rating: Summary: When asked to name my favourite book ever - THIS is it. Review: Reading Dreams Underfoot was truly a life-altering experience for me. It shifted my perception of the world around me; suddenly I was seeing magic in the everyday, magic all around in what used to be the most mundane of things.Another reviewer wrote that Dreams Underfoot is a gift. This could not be more true. Charles de Lint has created a universe parallel to the one in which we live, but he has crafted it so delicately, so skilfully, and so beautifully, that it becomes achingly real to us, the readers. I have purchased several copes of this book. I feel compelled to lend it to every person I know and love, since it was through a borrowed book that I first read Dreams Underfoot myself. After my personally perchased copy of the book took numerous journeys, it became quite tattered and forlorn, so I purchased another. And when it was leant out on all the occasions I wanted to return to Newford, I decided to purchase a 'stay-at-home' copy, just for me. I cannot encourage you enough to read this book, and all the Newford tales to follow. If you have ever had a day where you felt the need to reconnect with the beauty and truth and magic that lives both within and outside us - this book contains that spark. Read this book. It changes everything...
Rating: Summary: An Excellent Volume of Urban Fantasy Review: So often I have been disappointed by urban fantasy. Its great promise has always been done injustice by such books as _The Borribles_ and other pulp trash. But not so with DeLint's work. Dreams Underfoot is a wondrous collection of stories - some funny, some scary, and some sad - that weaves traditional folklore into the tapestry of our modern lives. Books like these are few and far between. DeLint writes as though he has elves living down the block from him, and after reading this book, you'll think you do, too
Rating: Summary: Wonder Review: This book and DeLint's other books work, because he can write. He could make the phone book a page turner. The stories he tells could easly turn into a series of dark horror stories but he always finds an angle that reveals hope. And it's not jingoistic bull, it's genuine hope based not on magic but on humanity.
I made me wonder.
It had been a long time since I felt wonder.
It feels good
Rating: Summary: the most beautiful collection of urban fantasy Review: This book had me looking into dark alleys for a glimse of fairy lights and the scuttling of small feet. It makes harsh urban life a new and magical place. Beautifully spinning a "glamour" over your eyes, a dark fantasy full of beautiful imagery.
Rating: Summary: Haunting, Lovely, Bittersweet Review: This book is a gift. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU Charles De Lint! The individual stories are absolutely captivating-every time I read them, I come away with something new. I've rarely, if ever, found an author with the abillity to evoke so many emotions through the power of his words. Sorrow, awe, joy, wonder-and above all, hope. De Lint makes me believe that there is still magic and mystery in the world for those who are willing to see it. The charachters he creates catch the heart. These stories-like the fairy tales of old-are at the same time etherialy beautiful, and achingly savage. The reader feels the wonder and the pain of each charachter in turn. De Lint leads the reader down paths of both darkness and light, and one really does feel as though they are treading upon dreams.
Rating: Summary: Simplistic Writing and Errors Review: This book seemed to me to be written simplistically and had a lot of errors in it. The errors took away any enjoyment I would have got out of reading it. It looked to me like it wasn't even proofread at all before publishing.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful urban fantasy!!!! Review: This book was my first expierence in "urban fantasy." Charles DeLint has taken the ordinary and everyday and has brought wonder to it! Newford must be an amazing city.... but I think that the point is, all cities has a little of the "magic" in them!
Rating: Summary: A very enjoyable collection of short stories Review: This is a collection of short stories by Charles de Lint, which are unified by common themes and characters, though each can easily be read on its own. The stories are all fantasy stories taking place in modern urban settings. As with his other works, de Lint is better in creating mood and characters than actual plots - and his view of real-world social problems seems rather simplistic and romantic; nevertheless, the atmosphere of wonder prevading these tales, and the evocation of beauty emerging even from the darkest parts of life, are strong enough to grab the reader's minds and hearts.
Rating: Summary: Unique journey into today's fantasy.... Review: This is by far one of the best books I have EVER read, definately in the Top 10. The text is lyrical and dreamlike...pulls you through the tales and keeps you waiting with bated breath. It's hard to categorize this book...in a league of it's own! Fans of classical Fantasy and modern fiction both will enjoy this collection of tales
Rating: Summary: Unique Fantasy, for those of us slightly jaded... Review: Walk in the real world and find Fairy walking beside you, if
only you could catch that glimse out of the corner of your
eye...."Dreams Underfoot" is a whole new perspective on the
Fantasy genre. For those of us who have read tons of Fantasy
it is truly a refreshing and unique change. It could be
your town, with the type of people you wish you knew, and Fairy is only a blink away. You will find yourself trying to believe just a little more, or look just a little harder,
that might really be a fairy creature you almost saw,
out of the corner of your eye...
