Rating: Summary: Read the entire collection. Review: I've got to say Id recommend the Wayfarer Redemption to everyone, even if you are not ordinarily a 'Fantasy' reader. Its approachable and absorbing, which many 'Fantasy' genre novels are not. To those of you who have only read the first book I say please reserve judgement until you have read at least the first trilogy.....you really need to read it in its entirety to appreciate the superior cleverness and subtlety that makes Sara Douglass novels so thoroughly enjoyable. Battleaxe doesnt even scratch the surface of an extremely intelligent and seriously absorbing storyline. Put aside a week and read them all - I guarantee you wont be able to put them down!
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Review: This was a fantastic book that was at the same time very original. I cannot understand one person complaining about the portrayal of women as they are all very strong characters. It is also original, with some fascinating concepts and issues being introduced. This was one of those books that you felt you knew the charcters, and I simply couldn't put it down till I finished it at 2.00 in the morning. I would also recommend the others in the series. (Hi everyone from the BB)
Rating: Summary: BattleAxe Review: It's a great book, I live in Australia and yes it is true - all the books are out in Australia. The author hates Faraday with a passion but wasn't allowed to kill her off... It's excellent fantasy, to all those who think it retreads old ground..all the ground it retreads makes it fantasy, not some indefineable muck. It's new enough for me!
Rating: Summary: Solid foundation for an excellent series Review: I have actually read all the books in the Wayfarer Redemption, so know what this book leads to. This is the second published fantasy book the author put out, so is still a little amateurish, but it is a solid foundation for what becomes an enthralling series. The characters, while still a little one dimensional, will soon grow into the promise that they show. The second trilogy is even better, one of the only series I have read where the lead characters have their weaknesses thoroughly explored. And if you think these are good, just wait until you can get your hands on The Crucible!!! And Threshold has to be read to be believed.
Rating: Summary: A fantasy that will grab you! Review: Battleaxe is a brilliant, brilliant read. If you are looking for a book that you can get lost in, this is the one. Every turn of the page takes you deeper and deeper into the world of Tencendor. The characters are deep, the plots are many and never predictable (although the reader may believe that at first) they will soon be surprised that all is not (actually nothing near) as it seems. The author, Sara Douglass, is a medieval Historian who knows what she is talking about. Since writing this book SHE HAS PUBLISHED 11 OTHERS, 5 of those being the follow on of The Wayfarer Redemption. Sara Douglass is an accomplished author who treats the reader with great respect and just knows how to tell a darned good story and after reading Battleaxe I was eager to read the rest of the series. I have now just completed the final book 'Crusader' and must say that all 6 books have left me breathless and begging for more. GO SARA DOUGLASS!!!!
Rating: Summary: Blllleeeeaahhhh Review: What an incredbily bad book. This is not at all what I expected. The cover gave me high hopes for the series, but after wallowing for a few frustrating hours in the namby pamby stuff that followed the original introdcution of the plow mythos [an ok start] i got too frustrated to continue. This is really poor writing, and really poor plotting, and really poor characterization. there was no one in this book I really cared about, and that in and of itself is enough to make me not care what happens in future volumes
Rating: Summary: Hard to review Review: I would have liked to reviewed this book higher, but then I would have liked to read it too. I dont recall when a Hardcover book I bought had print as small and fine as this---note to the publisher--not sure what your intended market is but if you are interested in baby boomer adults who dont have the vision of jet fighter pilots--DONT CHEAP OUT ON THE PRINT--.
Rating: Summary: Spectacular!! Review: I loved the way the plot unfolded and how little comments and hints lead you guessing at how it's going to turn out. The character names are silly but you can't expect people from another world to have names like Sally. I hope that more books in the series come out soon because I'm dying to read the next one. She leaves you aching to read more, a must read for fantasy fans.
Rating: Summary: Not worth the money in hardcover Review: I don't think this is thw worst fantasy novel I have ever read. It is in the same vein as the Dragonlance sagas, though not as well written. It is pretty cliche and the character of Faraday is unduly annoying. But I did not throw it at the wall, and I did finish it. That's the nicest thing I can think to say about it. The bottom line is that this book is not worth the money in hardcover. It might have made sense as a pulp paperback, but the fancy packaging does not elevate the writing to what one at least expects from an almost $30 hardcover. I will not be reading any more of the series, but I suggest if you do that you wait for the paperbacks.
Rating: Summary: Retread Review: This is the same old same old, and it bothers me that is it made to look so much like a Gear or Haydon book with the Royo cover art and map, because it is not of the caliber of either of those writers. It's hard to think of something new to say that hasn't already been said. The prophecy IS cliche, the character names ARE silly, and the plot IS the standard one. It is not anything but a retread of older, better ideas, poorly conceived and written. Sometimes I think that American publishers will put out anything that's popular somewhere else in the hope of duplicating the success here. That seems lazy to me and insulting to the audience. Just because it is a hit in Australia doesn't mean it is gonna play here. It's like they are looking to relive the success of Harry Potter. The problem is, sometimes foreign means fabulous [Rowling]. Sometimes it just means from far away [Douglass] This book may hold your attention if your on a bus or a plane, or trapped waiting for someone to come out of surgery. But it isn't the Great New Thing. It isn't Williams or Hobb or Haydon or Pratchett, it's just a retread of all of those things.
