Summary: useless without the sequel
Review: as with the other SD books i've read (first chronicles), i struggled to get into this one. and because the first chronicles were so great, i also persevered with mirror of dreams. my perseverance was rewarded - the plots and counter-plots keep coming fast and furiously. with a page and half to go, i couldn't believe that SD would be able to wrap up the various plots in the space available. but i've read james clavell's shogun ( *THE* most awesome book ever ) which does wrap things up in a final page. so i suspected nothing. my dissappointment was immense when i discovered that SD wrapped up exactly nothing. the book is useless without the sequel. i immediately went out to search for the sequel (with no luck; bought the second chronicles instead - all 3 books just in case the same thing happens...). i am sure to eventually read the sequel, but at the moment i feel robbed of a significant time investment and no reward. empty feeling. can't believe a book can be published which leaves the reader with no inkling of how any of the plots will be resolved.

Summary: Remarkable
Review: I bought this book in hardcover back in 1987 at the age of 13 because it was on the bargain rack for $5. I read it that night and discovered there was a sequel. I begged my mother into a ride in to the mall and then begged the $20 (oh, when hardbacks this big were $20!) out of her and read A Man Rides Through in two days. I have read it 12 times since. It is the most remarkable duology I have ever read. It is not only a tightly crafted tale with completely fleshed and magnficent characters, but a combination of so many genres: fantasy, sci-fi, action, thriller, mystery, horror, romance. And all in only about 1300 pages! I must admit, I can't decide who is my favorite, Adept Havelock, King Joyse, Geraden or Terisa. I feel like I know them. And I'm proud that I do. If you want to find the true meanings of courage, integrity, loyalty and love, these books are all you'll need.

Summary: SD breaks alot of rules, and gets away with it
Review: With this two-part series, SD broke a lot of "rules" or conventions of the fantasy genre.

First of all, it's very cool to write a fantasy saga in two, not the usual three or more parts. As far as I know, no other fantasy writer has written a two-book series, they either do trilogies (even Donaldson himself is guilty of this, of course!) or endless multi-volume epics (yawn).

Another aspect of this novel that's very unique is that, for the most part it takes place within one single location, The Castle, and SD builds the story, the intrigues (can't spel that word!) and the romance around the characters, without them constantly taking off on pointless journeys all over the world.

The only problem is, after reading this book, you'll never be able to go back to the endless "travelouges" of most other writers like Robert Jordan, Eddings, Goodkind etc.

Summary: Truely the best fantasy book I have ever read....
Review: I've read a few fantasy books over the years but none have come as close to my heart as this one. Terisa, an unnoticed and undreaming woman in her own world is unprepared for the title of champion given to her in another. Not your ordinary fantasy tale of an unwilling hero, or a prophesised boy child destined to become king. Just an old fashioned, romantic adventure with beautifully created characters; the King's daughters dreamy Myste and fierce Elega (my favourite), brutal (and forsaken) Lebbick, the swashbuckling Artagel, decent and loveable Geraden, neglected Nyle, Master Eremis and all his plotting, King Joyse and the Tor. All are characters that will stay with me forever. The story line is full of twists and intrigue and is a new and refreshing view of 'fantasy' (so often defined by the more common 'sword and sorcery' tales), but it was the complexity and vitality of the characters that won me over.

Summary: W-O-W
Review: I just finshed this book, and I cried...its like 2:45am, and I've been reading it since about 11 this evening, its a book you can't put down. I cried because, fisrtly it's finished (I have to get the sequal!)but mostly because you 'get to know' the characters so well. You feel for them, especially Geraden, he's wicked..

It's a fab book, heavy reading as it's chunky (and for a 15 yr old like me even more so) It took me a week to read it, and I couldn't tear myself away from it, in fact, i've had bearly any sleep..so it must be good cause I love my sleep!

Enough of my ranting, this is a captivating romantic drama and it has captured my heart so nwo I'll have romantic notions like Myste....

So thanx Mum, for passing it on to me!

Summary: The best book I've ever read.
Review: The Mirror of Her Dreams was the first fantasy book that I've ever read and it turned out to be the absolute best. I now search for books in this category that can hold my interest and intrigue like this book did, but have thus failed. Although I have read many other excellent stories, I have never read a book that gets the reader so highly involved with the senses, emotions, etc. It is a story of depth and of course dreams. I have read this book and it's sequel twice and will read them both again and probably many times more. These books leave your imagination swirling into fantasies and lands beyond into the mirrors of your own dreams....-a soul searching novel that I would recommend to anyone.

Summary: fantastic book
Review: I read this book when it first came out in hardback and it was one of the best books that I had read in a long time. When it came out in paperback, I read it again and then I devoured the sequel. It was such a great book, it inspired me to write a story about similar events. If you love fantasy and magic, then this is a book for you. Read it!!

Summary: waiting waiting waiting...
Review: this book had all the right ingredients except action. NOTHING HAPPENED! There were half hints and glimpsed promises of what could be, but it held back giving me any manisfestation of these. Thank goodness the sequel "A Man rides through" came through with the goods. That was excellent. The first book just set the scene. Which for a 658 page book is a big introduction chapter. I suggest you read the blurb of the first, (and the fantastic first paragraph) and jump straight to the second book if you want to see something happen.

Summary: A Classic
Review: I read the Mordant's Need books when I was fifteen and I've revisited them several times in the ten years since. No other book I've read, in any genre, has fed my soul like this one. The characters truly come alive; they seem like old friends now.

I've noticed that people either love this book or they hate it. I think that women might be more likely to enjoy this book, because of its romance. I recommend it to anyone, though, because if you love the story it will stay with you forever.

Summary: A captivating novel!
Review: I was so disappointed when I finished this book because I just wanted it to go on forever! Fortunately, there's a sequel, and a whole other series to read (Thomas Covenant).

Like his other books, it draws you in and involves you, the reader, emotionally. Furthermore, he doesn't give away any of the plot, and I found myself getting caught up in the emotions of the characters.
