Rating: Summary: POORLY DONE Review: A novel is about people, but instead, The Patriots is an attempt to present the history of the War for Independence with a weak and hastily contrived plot of fairy tale-like identical twins inserted with flimsy characterization and plot situations that at times elicit a chuckle for the absurdity. This book leaves the great story of the American Revolution inexcusibly tattered and diluted, and characters thoroughly forgettable. Any finished attempt at a novel deserves one star and that is what this book rates.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Review: Do not be paranoid about this book. It is an absolute masterpiece, beautifully written by Jack Cavanaugh. I first read it at 11, and I still read it now. Why, you may ask? Surely you must be a devout american, you say? Wrong. I am a proud Canadian. You don't need to be american to enjoy this book. I became so attached to Esau and Jacob, that in the dramatic climax, I can't stop crying.
This book is about another generation of the Morgan family. Esau and Jacob, twin brothers, are at odds again. Jacob had stolen Esau's fiancee for his own. But Esau stil loves her. The fiancee has to hurt Esau in order to make him able to love again. In this beautiful story, George Washington, Benedict Arnold, and Benjamin Franklin all come out of the clouds. Arnold is a good friend to Esau. Franklin is a friend of the boy's father. Washington is just a normal military officer.
You should read this book.
Rating: Summary: One of the best in an excellent series Review: I have read this book several times, and each time it gets better. I have the whole series, and consider the Colonists and the Patriots the best two. I like the treatment this book gives to famous revolutionaries and to common soldiers as well. It also remembers the home front. I only wish the series had more than eight books (hint, hint, Mr. Cavanaugh), and I will be buying the book he is releasing soon.

Rating: Summary: The Patroits Review: I think this series is very good. Jack Cavanaugh is a very good author...my kind of author. He writes using facts of the time his story is set in. HOWEVER, my gripe is with this publishing company. When I start a series and I like it, I want to be able to finish the series. Especially when it is the "same" family the stories are about. They have #3 (The Patroits) and #6 (The Allies) out of print. I can't find any way of contacting them on the net. Chariot Victor is a division of Cook Communications. The earlier books are by "Victor Publishing". My guess is there has been some financial problems and revamping of this Company...as is the "American Way" nowadays.

Rating: Summary: Great Review: The 3rd book in this incredible series, The Patriots displays the authors love of history and fascinating writing style which enables him to weave spellbinding fictional stories into painstakingly accurate historical events. I was captivated once again by his amazingly deep characters and his use of romance to toy with your emotions. His understanding and prediction of human nature continues to astound me. I highly recommend this book to history lovers everywhere (of which I am one) and also to Christians, teachers, and anyone who loves a good novel. Although I did not find this book quite as difficult to put down as the other two, it was still a wonderful reading experience and every bit worthy of my time and I venture to say yours too.
Rating: Summary: Excellently written with novel twists and turns Review: This was a GOOD book! Not only could I not put it down, the twists and turns in the plot only made for better reading. The prophetic naming of the main characters Jacob and Esau (twins that are at loggerheads over their place in the family) was great. The history comes alive through the many characters of the American Revolution woven into it. It was truly one of the best books I have read in a while. (Caveat: Having read the first two in the series as well, I obviously liked this one best - so far. I'm about to start book 4.)
Rating: Summary: Not my favorite in the series, but still a good story! Review: Twin brothers on opposite sides of the war--and life. The characters didn't seem quite as good, or the plot quite so exciting or moving, as the others at first, but I still liked it a lot. The ending was really exciting and touching, and the romance was very nice and endearing. I liked this one better than the last book in the series, but the whole series is great!
Rating: Summary: It was good, but not as good as the first two Review: While I love learning about history while I read, there seemed to be a lot more history in this book that sometimes I lost the story. I wanted to know more about what drove Jacob and Esau, there had to be a reason behind their rivalry, but I don't know what it is. When Esau visited Jacob in prison there was a perfect opportunity to provide a back story but it was never done satisfactorily. The story and history about our split from England was well laid out, but I have come to know the Morgan family well and wanted to read more about them than the various historical figures that were in the novel. However, I love the book and will keep it as a part of my personal library to reread in the future.
