Rating: Summary: Good sequel, but too many loose ends! Review: First, this book was vintage Turtledove with his interesting twist on how things familiar to us may have happened in a different reality. However, does this really need to occur over 3 books? For the amount I spent on this book, I expect to have at least some plots tied up. Tom Clancy knows how to use well developed characters and complete a story even if it takes 700 pages. There is just no reason why he couldn't have told this story in 1 book except for the money (or maybe ginger). Finally, what's with the cover? These figures have little, if any, connection to this story. From now on, I'll wait for the paperback.
Rating: Summary: I Can't Wait . . . Review: . . . for the NEXT book in the series. Ya, some people have criticized Turtledove for writing series. I LIKE serieses(sp?), when they are well written. This series is well written. We are only given enough information about characters from the WorldWar series to remember who the characters are. No more, no less. The new main characters are fleshed (and scaled) out well enough to feel for, or against, them. I think I know what the "Lewis and Clark" is, but I'm not telling! My real questions are about Sam Yeagar's new children. Will he have the problems Ttomalss had? Who's their mother? Hurry up, Harry. I need my next Second Contact fix.
Rating: Summary: cool Review: This is a great book
Rating: Summary: When does the next book come out? Review: I liked all 4 of the WORLD WAR books--and this one measured up and then some. It was good to see some of the characters from the old series and see what happened to them after 20 years. The new ones were also very interesting. The action for Lizards and people was all over the world and there are some real surprises with ginger. I can't wait to find out what happens next. This one's a winner!
Rating: Summary: Superb! Review: This an intriguing and exicting book! Have you ever said, "What if this had happened? Or What if he didn't do that?" Well then, this book is one for you.
Rating: Summary: I screwed up below Review: Well, I gave a critical review below and messed up and gave the book 5 stars. THIS BOOK IS WORTH 3 STARS, so I have to give a one to even out the average. :) To reiterate, the BEST THING ABOUT THIS BOOK IS ITS ART COVER!!!
Rating: Summary: Good read Review: This is the first installment in the successor series to the WorldWar novels. The Race, a reptilian alien species, invaded the Earth at the height of World War II. The Germans, US, and USSR fought them to a draw, and the rest of the planet fell under their control. This book takes us forward 20 years to a world under mixed control. The Race's colonization fleet has arrived, setting the stage for renewed struggle. If you liked the Worldwar books and wanted to see "the rest of the story", this is a good start. But you'll have to wait for the sequel(s) to this book to get any real questions you had answered.
Rating: Summary: just not up to his usual standards.... Review: Dr Turtledove..(he has a Phd) was the man who set the standards for the alternative history genre with "Guns of the South", but "Colonzation: 2nd Contact" just isn't worthy of a writer of his talent. The orginal series.."WorldWar" (a.k.a. the "Balance Series" was good, if not great, but this book just avoids, almost completly, the tension that filled the original books. As one previous reviewer wrote the novel suffers from being overly padded. If you are a hard-core Turtledove fan, by all means buy and read this book. If you are looking something new to read, try S.M Stirling's "Island in the Sea of Time" or one of Dr.Turtledove's earlier works. His latest book isn't bad..but he is capable of so much better.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Turtledove -- and there's few higher complements Review: I'm a busy man. When this book arrived, I took the entire day off and read it. There's only one problem -- I want the other two, and I want them _now_. Turtledove avoids the convention; alien invaders land in 1942, and they... neither win nor lose! Instead of a melodrama, we have the messy tragedy that's most of human (and here, inhuman) history -- a draw. Now the Colonization Fleet has landed, and everyone's in more trouble than they can twitch their tailstumps at. Old friends return, and intriguing new characters make their appearances; and at the end, we're left wondering just what the hell the _Lewis and Clarke_ IS. More! More! Everyone, go out and buy!
Rating: Summary: Go buy book! Review: Go buy book
