Rating: Summary: It's out there Review: Taken entirely on its own merits this witty adventure novel deserves an extra star, but good as it is I cannot really say that it stacks up against the best works in print. As an example of gaming fiction, however, it could probably be a five star book. Richard Tucholka's schizophrenic role-playing game of modern horror, government agencies and high explosives is an uneven mix of childish humour, satire, action and scares; and to his great credit Nick Pollotta somehow managed to match the mood of the game perfectly and create an enjoyable romp in the process. The plot is linear, the characters cardboard and the laughs sporadic, but the whole is pulled off with such panache that it is impossible to avoid being swept along. Gamers love this book, perhaps because it reads exactly like a gaming session, but if you are coming to the world of Bureau 13 from more traditional horror and conspiracy fare then you may find that you're biting into a meringue: It's awfully sweet and fun, but lacking in substance and ultimately a wee bit less than you might have hoped for. But... if you see a copy at a fair price then you could certainly do worse.
Rating: Summary: This ain't the X-Files, baby... Review: Thanks all. The "Bureau 13" novels were tremendous fun to write. Can't wait until I can write some more. Feel free to write me anytime to talk about books, or just to stay in touch.
Rating: Summary: Excellent work in light hearted science fiction Review: The art of science fiction comedy seems almost lost at times and then you stumble on a book like this. The characters are interesting, the setting fascinating, and the story engrossing. All of that and excellent humor. This story is based on the RPG "Stalking the Night Fantastic" by Tri Tac industries and has done more to strike interest in this particular RPG than anything done by Tri Tac. Any fan of the X-Files would find this book good, since it is a more humorous example of the X-Files. I have no qualms recommending this book to anyone with an interest in science fiction.
Rating: Summary: Monsters and Magnums! Review: The book is based on a Role Playing Game (RPG) and has a lot of potential. The only problem is that it reads like a radio annoucing a play-by-play of an actual game. The plot is loose and appears to form almost spontaneously as it progresses. The characters are stereotypical and two dimensional. I'm curious if the secons book improves on the first, since there doesn't have to be as much effort on side comments and more on the story line. It was reviewed as a parody of the X-Files. I disagree. There is almost no parody, but minor plagurisms of assorted myths and popular literary genres.

Rating: Summary: A lively and fast moving story. Review: The Bureau 13 series (at least 3 that I know of) is a lively and fast moving adventure. This series describes the adventures of a group of FBI agents who use a mix of technology and magic to protect the US from a variety of dangers including vampire carrots. The action is well paced and tongue firmly in cheek throughout.
While definatley light weight they are a damn fine read and a good use of several hours of spare time. I reccomend these books to younger readers, RPG players and anyone else who likes the action fast, the humor broad and the and the puns excrutiating
Rating: Summary: Brilliant book, the start of a great series Review: The Bureau 13 series is on my "buy on sight" list. To date, I have loaned and lost three copies of this book, and will keep buying it as long as I find more friends who haven't read it yet. The movement of the plot keeps you on the edge of your seat, with well-placed surprises both large and small. Pollotta has a gift for creative uses for armaments, exquisite puns and in-jokes that are worth tracking down. In short, this book inspired me to run a year-long game in the same universe.
