Rating: Summary: good not great Review: This is a good book and very fast paced, but i dont think it is as good as its lead in "the surgeon" (excellent). The surgeon grabbed you and didnt let go, while "the apprentice" grabs you and seems to try and not let go by doing the same thing as the last book. The fast pace keeps you reading, buit not on the edge of your seat. I do like the insight into the Warrens Hoyt's mind and the direction that this book could be leading, but the events that led to the joining of these two killers is not adequately developed.
Rating: Summary: Breathtaking Review: It's cliché to say a book kept you up all night, but in this sequel to last year's THE SURGEON, there is no other way to say how riveted I was to turning the pages in this novel. I found myself skipping over words to get to the next sentence, the next paragraph, the next step in figuring out who was killing in Boston. The tension just never lets up. Rizzoli is still the only female detective in the Boston PD Homicide Division. She feels the need to measure up to the guys and exceed their expectations. She won't let herself break down or crumble, yet her authority as lead on the case is being questioned by a "fibbie," an FBI agent from Washington requested by higher authorities. Her lieutenant is concerned that her personal involvement with The Surgeon will underscore her new case. Rizzoli professes that her fear will not interfere with the execution of her job. Part of that job is attending the autopsies, which are vividly portrayed, definitely not for the weak of stomach. The smells from the autopsy table wafted under my nose, so intense is the portrayal of the best-of-the-best medical examiner teamed up with a forensic anthropologist. We learn about the tiniest details that help identify the victims, including such facts as: the stage of development of the fly papillae left behind; what evidence is left behind on the adhesive of duct tape; what happens to hair as it stays in a decomposing body; and how wounds taped back together can reveal the weapon that split it apart. Fascinating medical and forensic information is included. Yet what it all really gets down to is human emotion. Tess Gerritsen has taken a chilling look at a vicious killer and entered his mind. We learn of his fantasies, his secrets, his ambition. Gerritsen also takes us into the mind of a fiercely determined female homicide detective and finds the source of her strength and her vulnerability. What a fascinating dichotomy we witness. Breathtaking in its intensity, this book raised the hairs on my arms, gave me shivers, fascinated me at every turn. I won't escape its images very soon. Gerritsen took me on a roller coaster and loved watching me enjoy the thrills and chills of that ride. She can sure write, and I hope she never stops.
Rating: Summary: and a half stars Review: The follow up to the Surgeon. Warren Hoyt is behind bars but a new killer acting in copycat fashion is killing couples. Jane Rizzoli is still healing from physical and mental wounds when the killings begin. From the start, she sees the similarities between the Surgeon and the new Killer The dominator. Others push her thoughts aside, saying she is obsessing about the old case and has lost her perspective. When Warren escapes Jail and the killings increase then they begin to listen to her. FBI pulls rank on this case and sends a Mr. Know It All to over see the investigation. From day one he rubs Jane the wrong way and won't share information with her, but demands to know about her investigation. Gerristen is great with her Who Done it Plot? Warren couldn't of done the killings behind bars but he does have access to the outside world through letters. Could it be possible the master has a puppet he trained through letters? Could it be the irritable FBI agent? Is there a copycat out there or is Jane still obsessing about the previous case? All these questions will have you reading late into the night to get to the conclusion. As for the conclusion it was rushed after the buildup of the plot and I little too neatly wrapped up. She does leave the end open to a third book.
Rating: Summary: Long and boring,,,,,,,,, Review: I loved "The Surgeon" so I preordered the Apprentice with high hopes. Have had it for 10 days and am still trying to work through the sludge. Jane Rizzoli as a lead in this book is all wrong in my opinion. She isn't likeable, has a chip on her shoulder, and isn't convincing in the role. She is simply too bland to carry a book. I didn't really mind her in the first book as she added color as a supporting character. "The Surgeon" was a 4 star book that had a beginning, middle, and end. Why a sequel Tess ? 2 thumbs down.
Rating: Summary: The Surgeon 2 3 1/2 stars Review: See storyline above. This seemed to me to be a rehash of her last book. The originality I expected was not here. What I did get out of it, along with the highly descriptive narrative of crime scenes, was the suspense. What you get here is basically a novel that should be entitled 'The Surgeon 2', with not a big difference between the two.
Rating: Summary: Excellent read! Review: This was my first book by Tess Gerritsen and hers is definitely a name to remember. I thoroughly enjoyed this thriller written by a woman: grizzly enough to keep you up at night turning page after page yet not full of disgusting details that rob you of sleep. I loved how very observant and sensitive Tess is in terms of powerplay, and her attempt to explain what goes on in the killers' minds.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely Fantastic!!!!!! Review: I cannot say enough about this book!! This book was worth staying up all night - two nights if need be!! REALLY GREAT.
Rating: Summary: disappointing! Review: Tess is the only author whose books I buy on the release date at full price. Boy was I disappointed. You know how when you watch a sequel to a movie it is never as good as the original?! Well this book is no exception. I felt like she ran out of fresh ideas and had to come up with a book. So she changed a few circumstances, added another killer and reprinted "The Surgeon". Since the Surgeon escapes from prison towards the beginning of "The Apprentice" you have the same cop chasing the same killer as before. Boring. This is the first Tess Gerritsen book I would not recommend.
Rating: Summary: Can gore be smooth? Review: In Tess Gerritsen's case the answer is a resounding YES. I thoroughly enjoyed the Surgeon, and wondered how any sort of sequel could top it...I read this book in less than a day & a half. It was compelling enough to keep me inside on a sunny Sunday morning. The characters were realistic, the plot tight and the level of intrigue well above most books in this genre. Any author writing about a traumatized protagonist runs the risk of creating a character that either annoys you unmercifully or sucks you into feeling sorry for them at the expense of their credibility. The author avoids both extremes skillfully, allowing you to empathize with the main character and get pulled into her progressive stressing out over the chain of murders that is culminated when the Surgeon escapes. The plot is tied up nicely with just enough daylight for something else to follow. All in all a terrific read.
Rating: Summary: A good, not great, thriller Review: Detective Jane Rizzoli returns to match wits with the diabolical killer from the best-selling novel 'The Surgeon'. We last saw Warren Hoyt behind bars for a series of sadistic killings... killings that almost pushed Jane over the edge, but now a new series of killings has sent the city of Boston into a state of panic. Wealthy business men are made to see their wives tortured and killed before they themselves are killed. Jane knows this is the work of Warren "The Surgeon" Hoyt, but how could it be? He's locked away! The further Jane dives into the current crimes she realizes these are new crimes committed by a copy-cat killer. A killer dubbed "The Dominator". It becomes clear this new killer has had contact with Hoyt, and before anyone knows what's going on Hoyt escapes...leaving the city paralyzed with fear as two madmen are running loose. 'The Apprentice' is a good thriller. Fast-paced, sharp detail, and expertly plotted, the only fault is the technical detailing sprawling throughout the novel. Page one lays the ground work for a lightning fast read but as the plot opens up Tess Gerritsen substitutes shocking thrills for very detailed medical descriptions. Halfway through the novel it seems that Ms. Gerritsen didn't know where to go with the novel, and even though the shocking ending does surprise, it does not answer many questions raised throughout the rest of the book. Tess Gerritsen has been one of my MUST READ authors since the publication of 'Harvest', and she has been consistent with good novels ever since, with the exception of 'Gravity'. Gerritsen's last novel 'The Surgeon' was an electrifying thriller, and while 'The Apprentice' is a good read it doesn't hold up to be a solid sequel. I am sure readers will rush out to buy this novel, and it will spend some time on the bestseller's, but devoted fans will be disappointed as this is not Tess Gerritsen's best work. Nick Gonnella
