Summary: POWERFUL SEQUEL TO THE SORGEON
Review: If you read The Surgeon then this is the sequel you have been waiting for. A year after Detective Jane Rizzoli saw WarrenHoyt, serial killer, put behind bars, Boston is breaking out with more murders only this time it's husband and wife victims. There is a clue that resembles Hoyt's MO but Rizzoli is the only one to see it. Clues from the killer's ramblings clue us in to a suspectthat works in the hospital. Then suddenly only women are murdered. The Dominator has a partner and between the two the murder ratestarts going sky high. Things begin to point to a new victim being set up, Rizzoli herself.A year ago she wasn't popular with her co-workers and had lttle sympathy from the readers but now she seems to spark an interest. The Surgeon is determined to kill her and he broke out of jail to do so with his new partner. One of them has been the observer and the other the doer but which one is The Apprentice? With jagged nerves Rizzoli puts the skids on the patners and wins the respect she deserves from fellow officers. When the reader reaches the end of the book. one of the partners is still alive, but which one? Will there be another sequel coming? Gerritsen can hold us in suspense with all the twists and turns of a good thriller so I for one am looking forward to her next book and I am not alone.

Summary: Readers wanting medical thriller will be disappointed
Review: I hope this isn't an indication of Gerritsen's changing interests, but this is primarily a police procedural with some but no where near enough medical details for medical thriller fans like me and my husband. I thought Bloodstream was her best, where I felt she skillfully combined a Stephen King-like understanding of teen life with excellent medical background. The Apprentice will appeal to you if you like Tami Hoag.

Summary: Good, fast-paced, but not scary
Review: Jane Rizzoli, Boston homicide detective, faces another serial killer. She is the classic example of a woman working in a man's world; she has a huge chip on her shoulder and a need to prove that she is the best and is not emotionally affected by the horrific aspects of her job. This time she is up against a killer who reminds her too much of her previous nemesis, The Surgeon.

This book really isn't that graphically violent. The killers are certainly psychopaths and inventive in the execution of their crimes. However, we see the aftermath of the crime, rather than the crime itself, since we are looking through the eyes of a homicide detective. The book was fast-paced, but I found the ending to be anticlimactic.

This is the first Gerritsen that I've read. When I picked it up, I didn't know that this was a sequel, so if you are like me and dislike reading books out of order, read The Surgeon first.

Summary: Very Nice Sequel
Review: I found this book excellent for Tess Gerritsen fans. However, unlike some reviewers, I believe the the characters would seem flat unless you read "The Surgeon", so I would have to say to read "The Surgeon" first before reading "The Apprentice". In this book you get to understand and even like Jane Rizzoli, the tough outside, Boston cop.
A definite recommended read to fans of Medical/suspense thrillers.
One reviewer named this book "Disturbing", but that is how many unstable murderers are...there are many documented cases of murder scenarios like the one in "Surgeon" and "Apprentice" (they are even brought out in "Surgeon").

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Disturbing
Review: This is only the second book that I have read by this author, and I don't know if I will read the next natural progression of this plot line. The nature of these books is so graphic that I wouldn't even recommend them to anyone I know; unlike Patricia Cornwell. The suspense factor isn't there. It's more shock value and, in my opinion, disgusting. What would make an author think of a murder plot to involve this kind of behavior?

Summary: Better Then The Surgeon!!!!
Review: In the book The Surgeon we met Jane Rizzoli a hard as nails detective with the Boston Police. She is responsible for the arrest of "the surgeon" the serial killer that had been hunting on the streets of Boston.

A year later and with many emotional as well as physical scars later Detective Rizzoli is called to another murder scene with chilling similarities to the Surgeon Case. After the investigation gets under way FBI agent Gabriel Dean shows up and is given all access to the investigation. Jane does not understand why he is there, he won't tell her anything but he does have the uncanny ability to know where to look for evidence and what kind of evidence to look for. Then just when things start to get going Warren Hoyt "the surgeon" escapes from prison and looks to have hooked up with the Dominator. Working together these two murders led investigators on a chase that includes some shocking twist and turns.

This was a well-written book that allowed you to get to "know" detective Rizzoli and perhaps even like her this time around. The characters were all well developed and the use of medical terminology was not left undefined so a layperson could understand what was going on. This is a sequel to the book "The Surgeon" but it can still stand-alone. You will not have a hard time following the storyline or how characters interact with each other. This was a true edge of your seat read but be aware that some of the descriptions of murder scenes , and autopsies are very vivid. A great read for the fan of Thrillers!

Summary: Tess Gerritsen does it again!
Review: I have been patiently waiting to get my hands on this book and finally I have. I have read every single book that Gerritsen has released and in The Apprentice I have not been disappointed. It is more or less a continuation of her earlier novel, The Surgeon. The big difference is that this novel focuses more on the female detective that helped crack the case in the first one. Jane Rizzoli was to me not a very likable character in the first book, but in this book she takes on a new light. She was portrayed as a very masculine type of female in The Surgeon, but in The Apprentice she takes on the role of the strong woman who is feminine yet at the same time a spitfire.
When murders start happening in Boston a year after the Surgeon has been in jail, Rizzoli is the only one who sees the connection at first. But as the body count mounts suddenly an FBI agent appears on the scene. Rizzoli who in all of her years as a detective has never seen the FBI work in this way, is very puzzled. Her puzzlement only deepens as her attraction to the FBI agent Gabriel Dean does also. When The Surgeon, Warren Hoyt, who she put behind bars in the first book, escapes from prison, all hell breaks loose. Rizzoli has suspicions that The Surgeon and their new killer, The Dominator are working together to fulfill their murderous fantasies. Tensions increase as Rizzoli and her fellow officers keep coming up with dead ends and no suspects in sight. The only problem that I had with this story was its abrupt ending.
Once again, I am impressed with Gerritsen's style and attention to detail. She is a wonderful story teller and I fully intend to keep reading her books and I highly recommend them to anyone!

Summary: Not bad!
Review: This was not, IMO, one of Gerritsen's best, but it was entertaining enough to keep me wanting to know how it would end. I look forward to reading more in the life of Rizzoli. She's become someone you tend to care about. Something tells me we haven't seen the last of "the surgeon".

Summary: What happened?
Review: Hated it. The writing is awful; the story line [stinks]; the characters are psychologically shallow and inconsistent. Midway through the book, I lost interest in the story itself and could have cared less about what happened to its characters. I have better things to do with my life than to spend any part of it reading something as bad as this book. What HAPPENED to Tess Gerritsen?

Summary: If you like mysteries with a psycho/med twist-The Apprentice
Review: I have read and interviewed 86 authors (of every genre possible) for our Library radio station WYPL here in Memphis since the inception of our 'Book Talk' program in 1993. It was my pleasure to read this book and interview Tess Gerritsen. Besides being a bright, delightful lady, Doctor Gerritsen has the benefit of her medical background to lend weight to her ploys and plots and she uses that knowledge to produce an intense, spine-tingling story about a twisted human monster, a copycat, who loves to butcher his fellow humans. I enjoyed this book for the reading and also for the tidbits of forensic information she throws at you. I write mysteries my self and I can tell you that this lady would make a great fourth at bridge with James Patterson, John Grisham and Tom Clancy. Now I have to find time to get the rest of her books and read them. Rus Morgan author of "Blackberries Got No Thorns".
