Rating: Summary: A brilliant writer Review: I've only recently become aquainted with the works of Robert E. Howard and have been greatly impressed with his writing abilities. The stories of Solomon Kane compiled in this paperback offer an excellent view into Howard's extraordinary ability as a storyteller. His description of a drifting Puritan on a personal mission to rid the world of all the evil that he encounters in his travels are magnificently portrayed. His fantastic method of using the language of the time in such a way that is easy to understand for the contemporary reader leave this (and other) novel very entertaining. At many different points during the course of my reading, I was fascinated by the situations that Solomon Kane would become embroiled in and was delighted by the vivid imagination that Howard obviously possessed to describe the resolution of each circumstance. My personal recommendation for this book is for all people who enjoy fiction regardless of the genre they may personally choose. This writer was excellent! His stories should be encouraged to all who can truly appreciate a master at his craft.

Rating: Summary: The Heroic Pilgram. Review: Solomon Kane is a religious adventurer, who has dedicated his life to battling evil in the name of God. He is an eccentric who carries pistols, rapier (sword), and an iron bound Bible. Solomon Kane is Robert E. Howard's most famous charactor after Conan the Cimmerian. Solomon travels all over Europe and Africa fighting vampires, sorcerers, and insane psycotics. This issue of Baen's R.E.H. series is the longest, but it is worth it. "The Wings in the Night" is my favorite story, about Solomon Kane fighting harpies from ancient Greek mythology. Other good ones are "Hills of the Dead", about flying vampires, and "Red Shadows". All of these books are worth buying because Robert E. Howard is a good writer. If you enjoy this book, try All the others in this series.

Rating: Summary: HOWARDS SECOND BEST CHARACTER Review: Solomon kane is Howards second best character and I think, his most original. Kane is a Puritan adventurer whose exploits take place in the late 1500's and early 1600's.Armed with a sword, musket, and pistols, Kane is the single most obsessive character Howard created. A man of Puritan ideals who has no qualm about dealing out God's justice. He tracks pirates from Europe to Africa to avenge crimes they committed. Great stories here, although a few were finished long after Howard's death. Among my favorites are "Wings in the Night" about a race of winged demon-like creatures attacking an African Village. Howard was a racist, no doubt about it so you need to know this and not be offended and remember that these stories were written back in the 1930's.

Rating: Summary: Must-have for any lover of dark fantasy and horror fiction Review: Solomon Kane's adventures are, in my opinion, among the best tales penned by R.E. Howard. None of his other heroes are as driven as Kane, nor as mysterious. The approach taken to the supernatural in these tales is also far more clever... and the supernatural seems far more horrific as a result. This book collects all of Howard's Kane writings, including even a poem that amounts to Kane's farewell appearance. It's a worthwhile addition to the library of any lover of fantasy and horror fiction... more modern writers in both genres owe more to Howard than most of them realize. On a final note, the 'fanboy' in me was particularly excited by the Kull cross-over in one of Kane's African adventures... when our hero stumbles into the final vestiges of the Alantean civilization!
Rating: Summary: Vampires and Assyrians are Kane's enemies Review: Solomon Kane, seventeenth century English Puritan, enemy of vampires, Assyrians, and other beings of this world and not of this world. Kane's iron will and indomitable spirit are a match for any earthly or supernal foe.
Rating: Summary: A Puritan Warrior in strange African lands... Review: This a collection of all Robert E. Howard's writings using the character Soloman Kane, a Puritan warrior who is driven by conflicting urges of vengeance and chivalry amidst supernatural foes. Most tales take place in Africa, where allied with a mysterious ju-ju man he has strange adventures, battling ancient races and ancient evils in his quest to deal out justice. These stories are very good on the whole. There area few poor tales by Howard's standards, and the one with a vampiric queen is a big let-down considering its potential. But there are a few classics - such as 'Wings in the Night', a superbly-drawn story with excellent characterisation and narrative action. The personage of Soloman Kane is very interesting and truly three-dimensional. Just a shame that Robert E. Howard didn't get to use him more often in his writings.
