Rating: Summary: Good read! Ambitious! Wide in scope Review: Harry did a good job here. Note: The two and a half tom military truck described in one of the scenes is commonly referred to as a "Deuce and a HALF" not Deuce and a quarter. Deuce and a quarter refers to the Buick Electra 225.Sorry for nitpicking, but I spent eight years in the Marine Corps and I hate it when people get this stuff wrong. I still thught it was a good read. Harry certainly did his research on the effectiveness of the weapons he wrote about.
Rating: Summary: Wow! Kept me on the edge of my seat! Review: A frightening book that will keep you riveted. So real it's scary. If you like books about the military, war, and the politics behind them, this book is a must read.
Rating: Summary: This is a TEN STAR book! Review: Arc Light is completely captivating. It is the most realistic of all such books I've read (Clancy, Bond, etc.) I'll never forget this one...truly a great work of fiction. I can't imagine anyone's not loving it.
Rating: Summary: VERY FRIGHTENING Review: This book will put your adrenalin levels through the roof. Mr.Harry has written a very frightening story on something that COULD happen, even, or maybe especially, during these days of relative peace in the world. The story covers WWIII from all viewpoints. Not every character lives to be a hero. This proves to me that mr. Harry didn't come up with some cheap American Hero Story. As I said: it will take your adrenalin levels through the roof. I picked the book up on a Saturday morning just to kill the time. Before I knew it I had read the whole thing without putting it down, and enjoyed every minute of it. If you're looking for a very thrilling and frightening read, take Arc Light.
Rating: Summary: This novel is one of the best! A perfect 10! Review: What can I say? This was one of the most interesting novel's I have read in a very long time! I am sixteen but have read about every military fiction novel there is and this ranks high on my list! I have read Arc Light many times, and each is more exciting then the last!
Rating: Summary: Arc Light -- a pulse busting MUST READ Review: This is the most remarkable novel I have read in a very long time -- as a long time fan of Tom Clancy, Larry Bond, Harold Coyle, Steven Coonts ,and Mark Barant, this is high praise indeed. I purchased it to kill time during a 20 hour airplane ride to Singapore, and did not put it down until it was finished! Mr. Harry's attention to detail and skill in the execution of a remarkable story line make this a book all but impossible to put down. The story line is frightfully plausable. Any fan of Tom Clancy will find this book to be a real treat. He has "out-Clancyed" Clancy!
Rating: Summary: A Small Tribute to a Great Book Review: Well, I don't know what to say, I've read Arc Light 12 times and found a new book in it every time. If you loved Alas Babylon, Op Center, or any other political thriller, you'll more than love this one. I tried to rate it at 11 or 12, but the form just wouldn't let me! GREAT BOOK! BUY IT NOW!
Rating: Summary: Stand-out new author in an overcrowded field Review: An online-reviewer of Harry's latest (1997) book accurately pointed out that "Harry is not afraid to kill people in his books." Too true. I have always enjoyed "thrillers" dealing with nuclear war and its aftermath (e-mail with your recommendations!) and this is one of the best! How often have you read through one of those only to find that the war is miraculously averted by the hero? Although that is certainly the preferred outcome in life, I would much rather have the fiction author take the more difficult path and walk me through the war itself. No disappointment here. Harry has the USSR/China/USA exchanging nuclear blows by page 50! What follows is a thoughtful and honest look at how this country would react, personally and politically, to a "accidental" nuclear exhange.
Rating: Summary: Tom Clancy's sweating bullets over this one! Review: This is Eric Harry's first novel, and he's either very lucky (believe it or not, he actually started writing this book by writing out a chapter to try out his new printer!) or the most skilled author I've seen since Tom Clancy. Get used to comparisons between the 2 authors, because Eric Harry's writing style is a dead ringer for Clancy's earlier books (before he got full of himself and started sermonizing in his latest novels). Harry doesn't have QUITE as much techno babble as Clancy (sometimes a plus, sometimes a minus), but he doesn't have Clancy's increasingly annoying tendency to have the narrator haul out a soap box and harangue you for a page or 2
Rating: Summary: Clancy-esque, but MUCH BETTER. Couldn't put it down! Review: When I picked up Eric Harry's "Arc Light", I expected something that would merely keep my mind occupied at odd moments. I figured I'd read this kind of stuff before. Just don't bore me too much.
Well, I ended up structuring my days around reading it! It's the kind of book that, when I'm only one-third through it, I know is a rare gem I'll have trouble finding again. It's a bitterweet experience, enjoying a book so much that you hate to finish it!
I was constantly surprised as plot twists piled upon plot twists. I often came to utter to myself, "Oh, WOW!", which is not something I get to do very often. Read this book if you'd like a refreshing surprise and a real page-turner
