Summary: a disappointing effort
Review: Being a fan of much of Stackpole's works, I looked forward to reading A Hero Born. Ultimately, I was disappointed. The book begins with lots of promise, but towards the end becomes a rather twisted mess of magic.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: EXCITING! FAST READING! A BIT GORY.
Review: DEFINITELY RECOMMENDED. I SAID "WOW" A LOT WHEN WATCHING THE MOVIE "THE MATRIX" AND I DID THE SAME WITH THIS BOOK. IF YOU LIKE SWORDS AND SORCERY THIS ONE IS FOR YOU. GROSS AT TIMES BUT NOT AS BLOODY AS SOME. CAN'T WAIT TO START THE SECOND BOOK, WHICH I AM GOING TO DO RIGHT NOW....

Summary: Fantastic
Review: First of all, do yourself a favor and don't skip ahead in the book, you'll ruin it. This story is Stackpole at his best. An original setting, convincingly and logically written. The author clearly considered the implications of the environment he created. The foreshadowing was available without being obvious; characters were well described and seemed to stay within prescribed personalities. The only qualm I had with this book was that toward the end it was hard to keep track of who was alive, who might be dead, and who was really dead. Fortunately, that's all explicitly stated close to the end of the novel.

An excellent read, order it and enjoy. If you want further excellence from Stackpole read The Dragoncrown War cycle, starting with Dark Glory War.

Summary: New look
Review: I am not a very big fan of Michael Stackpole but I enjoyed this book very much. I have read many fantasy books and it is always refreshing to see a new idea. In a feild that is potentially unlimited most writers seem to stick with the tried and true "Tolkien" view of things which is not a bad thing but has been revisited too many times. Stackpole takes a new look at chaos and order and leaves magic in the backround. I am looking forward to reading the next book. When is it coming out???

Summary: Good story, bad writing.
Review: I came to this story knowing Stackpole only from his X-Wing series of books--all of which are fairly readable in various degrees, from good to mediocre. While it's usually true that good 'sci fi' authors can switch at will to fantasy, this is sadly not the case here. Stackpole's story is fine, his setting fair--but his characterization and, above all, dialogue, are completely misplaced. The fifteen-year-old protagonist has the gravitas and vocabulary of a...well, a novelist. The word choices all around are very 'modern,' and ruin the illusion of a 'past' world repeatedly. The suspension of disbelief, so vital to a 'fantastic' story, fails in the face of these repeated assaults of anachronism. It's too bad--with a rewrite, this story could be great. Read it only if you don't care about such details; if you do, steer clear.

Summary: Great Book
Review: I found the book very interesting and fun to read. I have vision problems and so i can't read or look at anything for too long but i couldn't help myself when i got to this book. i couldnt put it down and i had to finish reading it to the end. I found it very enjoyable as i also "fell" for locke and xoayya.

Summary: I suppose I am in the minority on this?
Review: I loved Talion Revenant, and know people who are also absolutely in love with his Star Wars series. This all just led me to be even more disappointed after suffering through A Hero Born. It certainly had some interesting ideas there, but it was really distractingly cheesy! But give it a read if you think you'll find otherwise, this author clearly is very talented despite my thoughts on this one book.

Summary: Science-Fiction Fan
Review: I loved this story! Very well written, suspenseful, with some interesting twists and a good healthy dose of versimilitude. The main characters weren't necessarily invulnerable, which I feel is very realistic. EXCELLENT BOOK!!!
