Rating: Summary: One of the best hard science fiction books. Review: Robert L. Forward is one of the best hard science fiction authors and this is his best work. Watch as a civilization of aliens no bigger than a mustard seed go from early tribes to faster-than-light spaceships in one book. This is a first in a two book series.
Rating: Summary: Dragon's Egg and the sequal Starquake exelent Hard Sci-Fi Review: The first Hard Science Fiction book I read, Robert L. Forward realy knows how to make a complete alien civilization come to life. The inclusion of diagrams and data at the end of the book was a plesent supprise.
Rating: Summary: Great Sci-Fi Review: The opening bit of the Cheela's story is a tad slow and the ending, while providing perfect closer is also a tad hokey. Nonetheless, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It reminded a great deal of The Listeners by James E. Gunn.
Rating: Summary: Good scientific piece, yet very boring. Review: This book gives a fantastic look into the scientific aspects of neutron stars, but is very boring to read as a novel
Rating: Summary: Extremely creative and entertaining. Review: This book pulled me into a world that is very hard to imagine. By making creative and interesting characters the initial draw was there. Then he surprises readers with the facts about the environment and conception of time. I hesitated to do a review because I want to get another copy of this book. I loaned the first one to a friend and he recommended it to all his friends and it passed from friend to friend till we could not recover it.
Rating: Summary: Hard Science Fiction Review: This book was recommended to me as a truly hard science fiction book. In this respect, I don't have any complains. Though written before the microcomputers revolution, and thus completely missing it like everyone else in the world, this is a book whose limits are set by science.More than that, it falls in one of the most fundamental sub-genres of science fiction, impact of new knowledge on society, as we see the rise of an alien race from it's very early beginnings. What the book _does_ lack, though, is a certain amount of conflict. There are a few page turners here and there, but nothing that will take you from the first to the last page. For younger readers, who are usually more enchanted with "wonders of new worlds" books (as I was, once :), it probably rates five stars, though.
Rating: Summary: My first and one the best Sci-Fi book I read!!! Review: This book was the first Sci-Fi book I ever read. It was loaned to me by a friend of mine in university. He was majoring in Physics and told me that this was the book to read if I wanted to start in the genre. I think I have been hooked ever since. This book substantially involves more physics than I have ever read. It is terribly engrossing and the story is well researched and written. I almost wish I was one of the astronauts to see the rise and fall of the Cheela civilation. A truly must read book.
Rating: Summary: One of the best in the 'Hard Sci-Fi' arena Review: This is 'the' book that hooked me on 'hard Sci-Fi'. It is way out there but it is also very plausible. The story grabs you and pulls you in..you live it as the main characters.. not knowing what is going on.. and you discover, with them, great things. The aliens are us!
Rating: Summary: The most original hard science idea I have ever read Review: This is a first contact story, with in my view, extremely alien aliens - you get the whole story of their civilisation and development, but the twist is that they are living life thousands of times faster than the humans, so for example when they converse, each human reply is given to a successive generation of cheela. Talking to the humans to cheela becomes a hereditary quasi-religious post. Brilliant stuff! Love it! Bob Forward is a bit old-fashioned on his love and sex, as many equally talented hard science writers are, but I don't care - This is his best book for a story. Also read Camelot 30K which has similar aliens but without contact.
Rating: Summary: Highly interesting, but woefully written Review: This is a great idea for a sci fi book. If we could get a real author to write it, we might have something.
Forward is a terrible storyteller and an even worse writer. The editor of this book should have been fired. But still, the notion behind the idea is enthralling. I read the book eagerly and with great pleasure. If you can ignore the hidious writing and strange sense (or lack) of flow, this is a good book. If you are a lover of the language and the telling of a good story, run like mad.
