Rating: Summary: Delicate and dream-like... Review: If you are a fan of Patricia McKillip, Robin McKinley, or Madeline L'Engle, give yourself a treat. Light a candle, find a comfy chair ... and spend all afternoon exploring this book. McKillip's writing is flawless, and she turns a simple folktale (well, actually it's a ballad) into a complex, symbolic story. This book isn't a page turner, but each paragraph offers a phrase or image that is nothing short of lovely.
Rating: Summary: A beautiful book. Review: The best way to read this book is curled up in front of a log firs, a glass wine at your side and torrential storm battering at the windows. This is a beautiful and elegant book. These are not adjectives I'd generally ascribe to a book, but they are the ones that best describe 'Winter Rose'. It is one of those rare books that I think is deserving of five stars. The story is set in a generic pre-industrial country town. The sort of setting that appears in dozens of fantasy. Rois is the main character. She lives in a daydream world wandering through the woods behind her fathers house. Naturally her father wants her to get married and settle down. There's a ruined mansion nearby. Mystery, rumour and gossip surround what happened there the night it was abandoned. The story begins with Corbet arriving to claim his inheritance, which is the mansion. His arrival adds to the mystry of the mansion. The villagers like him, he is friendly and outgoing, but he also becomes the centre of gossip When I mention Rois has a sister I'm sure you can see the line the story is going to take. Don' t discard this book out of hand because it dosen't seem to have a terribly original plot. 'Gone with the Wind' has an equally unimaginative plot when you reduce it to a few sentences. Where this book excells is in the details, imagarry, style, the sheer brilliance of Patricia's writing. I was captivated by the book from the opening paragraph. No book is perfect in every regard. I could find flaws in Shakespeare if I looked. 'Winter Rose' is no different. I could list a few minor nit picking problems, but I'm not going too. The book was such a pleasure to read I don't want to spoil the memory of the hours of enjoyment it gave me by focusing on a few minuscule and basically irrelevant flaws. If the first paragraph of this review seems like an enjoyable way to spend and evening (I know it won't appeal to everyone) then 'Winter Rose' is an absolute must for you to read. The book is magnificent.
Rating: Summary: This is a book for all who can see and dream! Review: This was the first book of Patricia McKillip I ever read and until now the most fabulous as well. I started the book one evening and I woke again from a deep slumber with colorful and poetic dreams a few days later. Winter Rose took me to the edge of this world, as close to the Otherworld as we can ever get. The story of love, facination, magic and secrets is one of the best I have ever read. I recommend it to all those who get completely captured by reading, who love little mysteries and who never stop dreaming.
Rating: Summary: Boring storyline. Okay language. Review: i found the plot of this book moved along to slowly to really captivate my interest. i also had trouble identifying with any of the characters. however, the author's use of language may be a saving grace of some readers.
Rating: Summary: Well written, but that's about it Review: I adore Patricia McKillip's work, so when I saw this, I bought it immediately. Unfortunately, it just didn't deliver. Her prose is lyrical, as usual, but the story just didn't interest me. Halfway through the book, I was still waiting for it to get started. I've shared it with my friends, hoping that they would spot something I didn't and the verdict was unanimous. Dud. A real disappointment from an artist that usually can't be faulted.
Rating: Summary: Awesome, thrilling, and filling Review: I think Patricia's books are wonderful. With their deep charm, and great emontions, they're fit for anyone who decides they like reading great books. You may know me, if you went to check out THE BOOK OF ATRIX WOLFE, another one of Patricia's awesome books, because I wrote a review to that too.But WINTER ROSE is defintely a winner! Patricia Mckillip is a great author, and anyone who finds reading not as a chore, but as an adventure into new lands should read one of her books.I just wish some of her books would stay in print for a while so I have a chance to pick one up.
Rating: Summary: A beautiful novel Review: This book is magical. Mrs. McKillip has a gift with prose I have rarely seen before and it brings life to the novel. Even if there were no plot, and I, unlike some of the other reviewers have no problem with Winter Rose's plot, this book would be worth reading for the beauty of the writing. Such vivid imagery deserves only the highest praise.
Rating: Summary: winter rose- a book for any one who need's an escape ! Review: this book took me from a hectic day - on a wonderful adventure. the charecters are interesting and mysterious. rios has the charm and stance of a fairy type person whose curiosity get's her into quite a situation -the mystery builds as the story goes on and the end is fantastic -however i'd like to see a sequill to this book- it was the first in years to keep my attention all the way through - my family had to read it to see why - i have teenagers who also were moved as much as i was with the glorious content of the winter rose.thank you for this enjoyment - katie
Rating: Summary: A lyrical retelling of the Tam Lin story. Review: Patricia McKillip`s use of language is so rich it`s almost
fattening. WINTER ROSE is essentially Tam Lin with a twist, but the lyrical prose and emotional depth of the story combine to create a truly compelling fantasy.
I select a sentence at random, just where I opened the book: "I shook my
head wearily, his failed daughter, his fey child, who had left her shoes in a
corncrib to go dancing with the night." It`s all like that, smooth and sudden
and lyrical, filled with wind and roses and green forest shadows; and with
the deep, dreaming secrets of the human heart.
.
Rating: Summary: Incredible prose that works its story right into your bones Review: McKillip's always beautiful prose
reaches a new level of haunting lyricism here. The language is rare
and rewarding and it communicates
the story straight into your heart and
bones. While most writers render a story into language, McKillip wrests
her stories from the language itself.
This one is luminous, wrenching, gorgeous, and powerful.
