Rating: Summary: great series Review: The Gaunt's Ghosts books are a great read if you like war science fiction. I have read all of them except the last, and I just started that one. If you are unfamiliar with the world of warhammer 40,000, the miniature game, some things may seem a little odd. Stick with it and you have the David Weber of science fiction land warfare. I have tried to read books from david drake but they didn't pull me in. There was something missing. These books found that something. Try them. You'll like them.

Rating: Summary: Grim and Gritty Review: The Warhammer 40,000 world was created as a tabletop turn based, dice rolling game of chance and strategy. But, what has come from it, is a first class sci-fiction universe that really comes to life in their storys. Reading these books you would never guess it all started with some games. This book is based on a short story from a bi-monthly short story magazine called "Inferno". Since then, Gaunts Ghosts have become legends. This books starts a little slow, but that does'nt last long. This is a grim and gritty tale of Commissar Gaunt and his motley crew of soilders from the now destroyed world of tanith(They are the "first and only" company of Tanith) as they face the unspeakable evil of chaos. You get to know many of gaunts ghosts as well as the tormented Imperial Commissar Ibram Gaunt, as he attempts to hold his men together in a epic saga of planetary destruction, treason and treachery, trench warfare, pride and honor...There are several other books that follow this great tale(Ghostmaker, Necropolis, Honour Guard, Guns of Tanith, straight Silver and Sabbat Martyr...and there are more to come).
Rating: Summary: A Glorified Battle Report from White Dwarf Review: This book is nothing but a more detailed battle report from Games Workshop's White Dwarf magazine. I was incredibly bored after the first 90 pages, which is basically a huge battle, but was encouraged afterwards when there was actually some character interaction. But all my hopes sank without a trace when the huge battles began. It's a shame because the basis of the plot, a robot STC, is such a good idea. Dan Abnet should stick to doing what he's clearly best at and that is writing comic books. If you want some excellent science fiction then please buy a book by Isaac Asimov.
Rating: Summary: Enter the Ghosts, Dan Abnett's "First & Only" Review: This book was fantastic, the plot was great and you realy felt as if you were part of the Ghosts. It has some unexpected twist and turns. "Gaunt's Ghosts" is a must read, as it is a brilliant introduction to the Warhammer 40K universe, it provides a snippet of the history of the Imperium. Become one with the Imperial Guard and fight the spawn of Chaos in mankind's eternal fight for survival. I can't wait for the sequel.
Rating: Summary: A book with a kick Review: This book was great. I havn't read too many warhammer novels but i loved this one. It had characters u could relate 2. I felt bad when they got hurt and stuff like that. It was written nicely with a good story line. U don't have to know a lot about warhammer to love this book. READ IT!
Rating: Summary: War glamorised to promote a game Review: This is a very poor science fiction novel that is clearly and blatantly promotes war to sell Games Workshop products. I urge anyone who wants to read good sci fi to stay well clear of this book. The plot is unreqalistic (to say the least) as we see smaller numbers win out in every battle. Why? They are the good guys, of course. Battles have been made gory just to be glamorous, the writing is immature and there is nothing to keep you hooked. Non-40K players should steer clear of this, it will have nothing for them. However, it will no doubt go down well with the hordes of teenage kids who buy GW products.
Rating: Summary: FIRST AND ONLY IS JUST THAT - ORIGINAL! Review: This is one of over half a dozen new novels that is based on a role-playing game that I do not play but looks interesting because of the artwork that captured my interest. Then I saw the books and decided to try one and I was not let down, but pleasantly surprised to read Dan Abnett's very detailed and colorful characters and world building novel. I felt like I was reading a futuristic dirty dozen! The characters are many and very well done, better than most action-based sci-fi novels, and the storyline was actually very good and there were a couple of pleasant surprises to boot! I love this new universe opened up to me and will read and review all of them. I am looking forward to part 2 "GHOSTMAKER" coming out in september. This is a must read if you like action sci-fi that is well written. Thanks Dan
Rating: Summary: Wonderful start for a great, great series Review: This is the book which started it all, the first book of the Gaunt's Ghost series. It is a mighty debut and my interduction into the 40k world. Not being to familiar with the 40k world and the loads of characters Abnett introduces, I got really lost in the first 50 or 60 pages, but once I got this all fleshed out I couldn't put this book down. The book starts off with the ghost's engulfed in a major battle with the forces of choas and Abnett takes little time to get the action started. Through out the book there are flashbacks off Gaunt's past, non-stop action and suspense, wonderful characters, and stories of courage of bravery. The first and only is one of the best books in the Gaunt's ghost series.
