Rating: Summary: Been There, Done That Review: R.A. Salvatore offers us nothing new here - but then, he rarely does. I loved every page of The Dark Elf Trilogy and am a huge fan of Salvatore's TSR character, Drizzt Do'Urden. However, Salvatore's other offerings thus far have been lacking in creativity and originality (see The Crimson Shadow). The Demon Awakens gives us more of both - but that's not to say it doesn't have some redeeming qualities. The main characters depicted here are Avelyn the renegade monk, an Elven-trained ranger named Elbryan, and the woman he loves, Pony, who has also suffered her fair share of trials and tribulations. The monk, Avelyn, is a delightful, interesting character while, as one might expect, the others add very little to the experience. Unfortunate in particular since the series focuses primarily on THEM. As for me, I think Elbryan is a Drizzt wanna-be with an attitude problem, and I only found him interesting in the early stages of the book when his Elven initiation is under way. All in all, he's one of my least favorite main characters of all time. The story itself offers nothing overly exciting. The Demon Dactyl (give me a break) is taking over the world with his armies of Goblins and Giants from his volcanic lair (Mt. Doom, perhaps). If you've read one Salvatore battle scene between a ranger and a dozen Goblins you've read them all. Fortunately they are handled better here than deeper into the series when such encounters are mind-numbingly frequent. All in all this book has its share of good traits, but almost all have a "been there, done that" effect on most readers. However, it IS worth a look to fans of fantasy and Salvatore, but it is the only effort in the Demon Wars series I would recommend at all.
Rating: Summary: A Super Exciting Read. Review: It had been awhile since I had visited the mind and worlds of Salvatore. I had forgotten just how amazing he can be. He creates exciting, believable and entertaining worlds filled with lots and lots of fantastic characters. Having previously read the Icewind Dale and Dark Elf Trilogies I was anxious to re-enter a time and space created by a master story teller. Anyhow, Elbryan and Pony are excellent characters, and the monks of st mere abelle add lots of twists and turns to the story. read this book you will definitely not be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: Fluently written, but not very smart Review: I gave only one star for two reasons. 1. the obvious sexism. 2. The book is not very smart. Every time the only woman in leading role appears in the book she thinks something about sex. Do I want to have sex with him... Is he thinkin sex when he looks me... Can I be in same room with him alone... The book has many pages describing how the two leading male characters train to be the best fighters. The men are disiplined and they train hard for mental and physical powers. On the other hand there is Jill who can be good fighter but not because of training. She fights because she's angry and hurt. Jill's emotional character can be compared with the horse Symphony also in the book. The Demon Awakens totally lacks the knowledge of why and how people act and think. This makes the story very simple and shallow. The story is fluently written, and can be entertaining especially if you like things like "The Fast And the Furious".
Rating: Summary: Best fantasy book I've read all year! Review: Mr. Salvatore shows again why he is one of the best fantasy authors out there. He involves exceptional characters with a great fast-paced plot. The characters are very well developed. You get to know each character intimately as they grow up and envolve into personalities that you feel the pain of, weep for, and finally shout with happiness for. Elbryan, Pony, and Avelyn are worthy enough to be placed with the like of Drizzt any day of the week. The only part of the book I found lacking was the demon dactyl, Bestesbulzibur. This surprised me considering that Salvatore had done such a good job of developing the personalities of enemies that I, myself was afraid for the lives of the good guys. This demon dactyl was just another power hungry beast form the underworld. Hopefully in his next book, Mr. Salvatore will give the heroes, Elbryan, Pony, and Avelyn, the enemy that they truly deserve.
Rating: Summary: He's back in the saddle and at a fast trot... Review: I would love to give this book a 10, but I can't. Salvatore was losing his touch, especially with the last book in his dark elf series. Like I said, though, he's returning quite well. The biggest problem is that there is no real challenge to the characters through the story. There is no sense of urgency in their mission. There is no real "bad guy." The original description of the Demon Dactyl is impressive. I was looking forward to learning about him/it and the history behind it, but there was nothing. It was just an unimpressive bad guy. There were a few other problems. The good guys were too perfect. Elbryan was a better Drizzt than Drizzt was, Pony was a better Catti-brie than Catti-brie. They didn't have anything remotely challenging. Also, sometimes the writing style got a little overdone. That said, I will say that this was a definate good read. This was especially true of the first two-thirds of the book. I literally stayed up half the night reading it.
Rating: Summary: R.A. Salvatores best book(s) Review: This is most definately one of the best books I have ever read! This is an epic fantasy where Elbryan and his best friend, and later on his lover Jilesponie, and their friend Avylen battle against the forces of the evil Demon Dactyl Bestesbulzibar, after his armies destroyed his, and hometown killing everyone in the town except them. A must read for all people over thirteen and who can read english, don't forget to read all the other books in the series!
Rating: Summary: R.A Salvatores Best Book Review: I am positive that this is one of R.A Salvatores best books! It is a fantasy about a ranger named Elbryan Wyndon and his friends as they battle against the demon dactl Bestesbulzibar. A thrilling book! possibly even better than Harry Potter! I liked this book because it covers all aspects of life and most things in it are realistic and easy to imagine, plus it had lots of magic in it and things that make you imagine. Although I would definately not recomend it for small children as there are some things in it not approprate for younger people! This book was so good, I really want the whole series to become a movie. I highly recomend it for all children ( And adults) ages ten and up!
Rating: Summary: Getting way too into it! Review: This book was amazing and my first Salvatore book I have ever read. I really enjoyed the seriousness of the spiritual battles and physical battles mingled with the wonderful timly humor that Salvatore's characters delivered. One of the neatest graphical scenes for me was the demon posession towards the begininng of the book, it was so intensely vivid that it was frightfully scary, as if you were right there and that your body could be sought next! YIKES! Like I said before what I liked about this book was the perfect blend between down right awesome seriousness and positively humours at the same time..Very hard thing to accomplish. This book definetly will draw you into this wonderful world of Corona! Get it!
Rating: Summary: Hype kills Review: This book is definitely worth both the buy and the read. I got the book at Wal*Mart(in all honesty) one day while I had nothing to do, and I was already a fan of Salvatore. So I bought it, and though I am very well read, this book almost immediately made it to the top of my list; definitely in my Top 5 list. Giving you a summary won't help much, but I can tell you what I liked about it. Though the character of Elbryan seems like your typical hero, nothing special, he has more of a story than most. Elven trained, as opposed to having one master swordsman as a trainer, Elbryan becomes a supreme fighter in the world of Corona. The Demon Dactyl, the antihero, isn't as original as most enemies. But, with that overlooked, he still is quite imposing. The incorporation of gemstones as a means of magic was very original and made every situation that much more interesting. The love story has been told, yes, but not through the light of Salvatore. With the other aspects of the story, the love aspect differs from most, and developes into an intruiging story in itself. Overall, the book is better than most I've read, ranging from The Lord of the Rings to Drangonlance. It has everything you could ever want and then some. But if you buy into people who claim it's nothing compared to the Dark Elf series, you're missing out. Of course it's not the same as the Dark Elf series, it creates different and more interesting elements, and in my opinion, beats out Drittz. And it's only the beginning.
Rating: Summary: Tsk tsk Review: This book wasn't too bad. It's perfectly worth reading, and invented some really cool concepts(such as each gem having their own power), and pretty good characters. But their are some things that I didn't like as well. 1.Too much pointless action. When you're halfway through the book, that's pretty much all that happens. 2.The characters are able to defeat evil too easily.. But nevertheless, I thought the concept of a demon dactyl was really cool, and he was pretty creative with the stones, and the Halo, et cetera. I have heard that the Homeland,Exile,Sojourn series is better than this one, so I'm gonna try that one next. However I did not think this was horrible, so read it if you like, some people really like lots of action. I personally don't but this was still good enough to finish.
