Summary: ...And the Darkness Flows Forth!!!
Review: Water From the Well of Darkness is a book that is slow to start but ends making the reader say to himself, "Damn this was a good book!" Every book, or every good book I might add, should start with character buildup and world buildup if it is in a new world. MW and TH do just that in this new series. It is very unpredictable as if they based this book off a role-playing game they played just a few days before, it shocked the heck out of me at the end anyways. The reader will finish the book wanting more of this new series, its a shame we'll have to wait at least another year before the next book comes out. The book contains and is definately not limited to, romance (lots and lots of this), action (also lots and lots of this), humor, and a bunch of minor conflicts that will either cause the reader to laugh their head off or want to say "damn this to the Void!" This is now my favorite quote after reading this book. Especially towards my English teacher but I won't get into that. Sovereign Stone will be yet another series these two authors, in my opinion, will come out ahead of their colleagues who also write fantasy. I have never read a novel by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman that I have found boring. Well of Darkness will be another book that will go on my read again list. Well I haven't said much about the content of the book. I don't want to spoil it for those of you who haven't read it and there are other reviews that tell about the content. I can guarantee it if you are a fantasy fan you'll not be dissappointed, or if you have the Sovereign Stone role-playing game this book provides a lot of insight on the world and will give you adventures to run in on your campaign. Another reason to have this book. So in these final sentence's I'm giving MW AND TH a big two thumbs up. I may not be a critic but I give praise to the authors who know fantasy best.

Summary: Well...
Review: I've been reading Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman since the Dragonlance Chronicles, one of the first fantasy series I ever read. I've read most of their Dragonlance novels and their Deathgate Cycle as well. Like the main character, in the Deathgate Cycle, Haplo, "Well of Darkness" devotes the majority of time to the villains, who slowly gain power and momentum in the course of the novel. Like the brothers Majere of Dragonlance, there is a conflict between good and bad, between the two brothers Gareth and Helmos. There conflict is much more pronounced, eventually leading to a war. It isn't completely new to follow the "bad guys", but it is refreshing after so many fantasy novels that insist on following the heroes, who too often just walk over villains while barely breaking a sweat. Since "Well of Darkness" is taking place in a new realm, it spends much of the first part of the novel, introducing and explaining it. This slows the pace, but it is better to take the time to explain things instead of simply flying by them and hope the reader will figure it out or dismiss nearly as quickly as the writer. All in all, "Well of Darkness" is not Weis and Hickman's best work. Many of the main characters don't make it out of the novel. Considering this is going to be a trilogy, some new characters will have to emerge, or the remaining characters, will have to develop and take more of a role. I know I'm heavily biased in favor of the Dragonlance, but I loved their Deathgate Cycle series. Perhaps, "Well of Darkness" will improve as the of series comes out, but it lacks what so many of their other better novels contain.

Summary: A different step....
Review: I have to smile at Don Perrin's review (it may be a little biased!!) I don't think it is readily one of their best works, but it has lots of potential. I own a copy of every book that MW & TH have written over the years, and I will say that this book is the most dramatic they have written because it touches a much deeper side of emotion; a darker one. This is probably the most 'realistic' fantasy novel I have ever read. They appear to have touched more deeply into the human core this time in their characters. I have always felt the sadness, despair, love, etc. in characters in Dragonlance, Rose of the Prophet, Darksword, Star of the Guardians, and of course Death Gate, but this time I experience the hatred, jealousy, and pure desire for power in this book. These are qualities you normally don't find so compelling in a novel about fantasy. Very intriguing. Can't wait for the next novel.

Summary: Boring:this is not a MW&TC book
Review: Hey, what is it with you guys? I have been reading the reviews and I am really surprised that you rate it so high.I am a very loyal fan of Margaret and Tracey's books, I have read most of their books as well as some of Margaret's solos but this one was disappointing. Very slow development in the plot, I could not "link" with any of the characters, I never felt like not-being-able-to-put-it-down. I have not found anything new in this book.I agree with some other reviewers, the end looks promising, but I am still under the impression that MW&TC wrote it just to sell and not because they had something new and exiting to say.

Summary: Best Hickman & Weis Book To Date!
Review: I think this is easily the best work that Hickman & Weis have done. It is the first of a trilogy, and with a start like this, I think the rest of the trilogy will be just dynamite! The story is a compelling view of the fall of the Empire of Vinnengael, and a great setup for what's to come.

Summary: Rather a disappointment
Review: Being a fanatic for Margaret's & Tracy's books, I was rather disappointed with this one. There is no comparison to the Dragonlance Saga or the Death Gate novels. The plot develops very slowly and even though someone would say that this is because the characters are being built up, I never felt any familiarity with any of the heroes. They seemed distant,I did not feel any bad or good or whatever feelings for them. They were indifferent to me(that's a bad thing!) I felt that Margaret and Tracy only repeated themselves, without having the spark of inspiration. They gave me the impression that someone forced them to write the book. Of course, I will surely buy the second volume when it will be released (it's an addict!), but they will have to do much better to convince me to buy the third one!

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Weis and Hickman do it again
Review: As usual, Weis and Hickman have produced a great novel. The best thing about this one was the fact that it showed how thin the line between good and evil is. The book was well written and the story was very intriguing. Can't wait for the sequel.
