Summary: Awful!
Review: This book was just plan awful. I can't believe I read the entire book, I should've stopped reading it after the first ten pages (which was the only good part of the book). The characters are not interesting and as a matter-of-fact I hated them. The main character Lirel (sp), seemed to me like a spoiled brat not a deceitful drow. The Fodo, fordo, whatever his name was barbarian/warrior character was only cool when he got mad (which he didn't do a lot) and his backround story was a joke. I higly recommend to NOT read this book. It gives a poor description of the drow life and Menzoberranzan.

Summary: Great story
Review: This book was my introduction to the Forgotten Realms and I am glad it was! This story, as well as Tangled Webs and Windwalker, were a great start for me for this setting as well as this genre of writing. Liriel is a neat character, and it is a pleasure to watch her develop throughout this series.

Summary: An entertaining, lively read. A+++
Review: This has to be one of the best Forgotten Realms books I have ever read (non-withstanding its sequels, which I also found to be great works of fantasy). I'm not going to compare it to Salvatore in any way except by mentioning that Liriel (main char.) is a mage (her dad is the archmage, Gromph), and the stories are much more magic-based, where as Salvatore spends hours going over swordplay details (though does it quite quite well). Cunningham's writing is complex without being boring, and fun without being stupid. I do highly recommend this book, especially if you are into the drow culture, Sorcere, etc., and even if not, it is an entertaining read!

Summary: great book
Review: This is a great book, another side of the world of Drizzt and such. I wasn't really sure I wanted to read the Drizzt novels until my boyfriend gave me this to read. I loved it. It's a great story. However, don't go into it expecting Drizzt it's not. This is Liriel's story. When I found out there were two more books, I decided I had to come order them. I have also now read the first three drizzt novels..and love them. It reads easily and is a great story.

Summary: Excellent book
Review: This was my first Forgotten Realms book and now I'm hooked for life. The impressive cover caught my eye and as I read through the first three pages, I was hooked. This is an excellence read that many will enjoy. The epic battle scenes and rich irony makes this book impossible to put down!

Summary: Awesome Book!
Review: This was the first Drow book I have read, and I think I can easily describe it with one word. Captivating. Once I started DOTD I could not put it down. I can't wait to read Cunninghams's second Drow book!

Summary: Awesome Novel
Review: This was the first Forgotten Realms novel I read. After reading it I found the others I read to be somewhat "corny." The author actually gives the characters depth and purpose. They aren't just out adventuring for the hell of it acting all righteous. This novel's characters come alive when you read it. I would reccomend this novel even for someone who does not normally enjoy fantasy novels.

Summary: Only for patient Drow fans
Review: While the story flows well, Ms. Cunningham's grasp of Drow culture in Menzoberranzan and life in the underdark is at best tenuous. At times I felt as if I was reading a bad episode of "Menzoberranzan goes Beverly Hills 90210". Liriel, the main character is interesting however for a magic user incredibly skilled as a warrior. The introduction of the other drow deities is the book's saving grace. I believe Ms. Cunningham should stick to writting about the surface elves, where she's more cofortable with the setting, henceforth making for much better stories.

Summary: Finally a complex Drow
Review: Without taking anything away from RA, (without whom I probably wouldn't have heard about the FR world) I would like say how refreshing it is to see a complex drow. While Drizzt is definitely thoughtful and easy to love, he always does the right thing. Lireal however, does not reject everything Drow, and this leads to an interesting character mesh.

As Lireal is chased out of Menzo, she discovers how many options there truly are in Toril. She travels with a virtous human warrior and the romance that develops between them is not only free from the moral condescension of Drizzt's love life, but filled with doubt and uncertainty. By the end of the book I found myself really rooting for the two to get together.

The two main characters themselves were great. I really cared about them. As mentioned above, Lireal doesn't always do the right thing. She uses her looks to her advantage, she doesn't reject Lolth, she's not above kicking men in the groin.

On the other hand she isn't evil. You can follow her internal debates as her Menzo heritage tells her to handle a situation one way, but some inner feeling disagrees. Overall she comes across as a fun-loving adventure seeker who doesn't know any better. Fyodor (her traveling buddy) is constantly trying to reform her, but reserves the moral judgements that he could have applied.

This book is great. The characters, their interaction, the alternate Drow gods introduced, this was a fine work by Elaine Cunningham and the next book "Tangled Webs" is a great follow-up so you don't have to worry about being left hanging.
