Summary: An interesting follow-up to a classic
Review: I remember in 2nd grade when our teacher read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to the class. It had such an effect on us that when we spotted Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator in the school library, we were all scrambling over each other to get it (I got it first). Looking back, while this book is still good, it lacks the central focus and charm that the original had. I did not expect the focus to be on the chocolate factory, since the title clearly says 'Great Glass Elevator'. However, the elevator only features in the first-half the book when everyone gets launched into space. This might have been a good idea for another book, but here it seems odd and rather dragged-out. With the second part of the book, the gang returns to Earth and mess around with Wonka-vite, an age-restoring miracle drug that gets badly abused. This part is much better, since we get to learn a bit more about the factory. Overall, I would have been much more pleased if Dahl had made the book longer and divided it into several seperate short stories. Together, the two seperate plots don't connect at all. Grandma Georgina also proved to be a bitter character and not sympathetic at all. Also, I hope that there is a version out there that still contains the original drawings in the book. Nothing against Quentin Blake, but the original sketches were classic.

Summary: Charlie and the Great Glass elevator
Review: I think Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator was a great book. I think it was very adventurous. This book is about Charlie traveling in the great glass elevator. The great glass elevator is an elevator made of glass. Charlie is trying to get to Willy Wonka's chocolate factory because the great glass elevator just picked up new passengers. I would recommend this book to people who like adventures. I also like the book because it is connected to the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory because the end of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is like the beginning of Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator. I enjoyed reading this book.

Summary: The Witches
Review: I think this book was flawless. It had very little appeal to me when I started reading it but as I read the story became as realistic as apart of my life. When I finished the book I had strong respect for the author. I think Roal Dahl should be congratulated for writing such a masterwork.

Summary: A Really Really Really Really GREAT BOOK
Review: I thought this book was awesome. It was always interesting. To understand this book better you should read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory first. It was funny when the old people, besides Grampa Joe, got really angery with Willy Wonka when they had to go so fast. I liked the craziness of Willy Wonka like when he wanted to make a 2nd hole in the celling. I hope you enjoy this book.

Summary: I hope Steven Spielberg buys the movie rights!
Review: I was looking through the Amazon.com books section for children and young adults, searching for just-slightly-past-Christmas presents for my niece, when I made an amazing discovery. For 24 years I have wondered just how Charlie, Grandpa Joe, Willy Wonka and the rest got back to earth after the great glass elevator left the building, and suddenly a way to answer my questions was at hand! After buying "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" for my niece, I ordered "Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator" for myself. Once again Roald Dahl succeeded in creating a work so vivid that it creates a picture in your mind better than a movie (because you can go to the snack bar and not miss any action). This is a wonderful book for children with imagination (even the 35 year olds). If you've always wondered what happened next, this is a great way to answer those nagging questions.

Summary: Quite unlike "Chocolate Factory"
Review: I'm very surprised at the positive reviews. This confusingbook has almost none of the charm and grace of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". The characters are often surly and sour, the attempts at humor are often spiteful, there's a paranoid overtone to the whole sorry mess that left me very, very sad. Halfway through, my young son and I decided to put it down, which resulted in a pretty good conversation between us about how even talented writers can go far astray. I can't help thinking that Mr. Dahl was in a pretty dank personal space when he knocked this insipid sequel out.

Summary: Disappointing and Pointless
Review: I've read the positive reviews for this book, and I just can't understand them. It's fairly obvious to me what happened -- in 1972, with the success of the movie version (1971) of the first book, the author probably answered the call for a sequel to the 1964 classic. Too bad. While the original is a timeless and charming (with a thoughtful message), this book is choppy, disjointed, and poorly written. Worse, there's just no point to it at all. Pages and pages are devoted to a rather silly saga of the elevator in space, which perhaps would have been marginally interesting in 1972, but badly dated at this point. That's the first half of the book. The rest of the book is wasted on the grandparents getting younger, then older, then younger again, by means of Mr. Wonka's concoctions. That really is all that it is about. Does that sound interesting to you? Again, no point at all. It just rambles on page after page as if Mr. Dahl's advance were based on the page count. Mercifully, the book ends. Nothing about the factory. Nothing about Charlie growing up. Nothing about Mr. Wonka teaching Charlie anything. I suggest you avoid it.
