Rating: Summary: Wonka carries another terrific book Review: "From fifty yards away, a full grown Vermicious Knid could stretch out its neck and bite your head off without even getting up!"
"Bite your head off with what?" said Grandma Georgina "I didn't see any mouth."
"They have other things to bite with," Mr. Wonka said darkly.
"Such as what?" said Grandma Georgina.
"Ring off," said Mr. Wonka. "Your time's up. But listen, everybody. I've just had a funny thought..."
This magical sequel picks up where Charlie and the Chocolate Factory left off, with Charlie bursting through the top of the Wonka factory in a flying glass elevator. After a quick stop to pick up Charlie's family, they fly off into space, eventually finding themselves in conflict with the White House and with a race of hungry space aliens.
This book is not quite as grounded as the first one; since it starts off flying around in an elevator, we know right off that this won't be a very realistic tale. But Dahl really pours on the humor and the thrills, which keeps us turning the pages as quickly as we can.
We return to more familiar ground later in the book, when Charlie's family returns to the chocolate factory and find it to be every bit as thrilling and dangerous as their encounters in space.
I believe that this is the only sequel Dahl ever wrote, and I wish all sequels were as good as this one. On the one hand, he does seem to fall a bit into the trap of making things bigger and better in the hopes that it will make up for the sheer originality of the first book. On the other hand, the book is far more bizarre than the first one, and at times takes on an eerie surreality akin to The Phantom Tollbooth.
It's hard to find a more entertaining character than Willy Wonka, who is fiercely cheerful and unpardonably rude, but always to those who deserve it. It's not many characters who can seemingly take pleasure from the act of annoying a trio of bedridden octagenarians and come out of it with more goodwill than he went in with.
Dahl has a talent for children's books unlike any other author. That talent is on full display here, and this book is as highly recommended as his other works.
Rating: Summary: AWSOME! Review: A great book, very funny. Reccomended for all Dahl fans!
Rating: Summary: Exceptionally Disappointing Review: After having read Charlie and Chocolate Factory after seeing the movie based upon it, I was happy to discover that there was a sequel. I immediately checked this book from the library and started reading it right away. Needless to say - I was very disappointed. The plot of book is, truthfully and bluntly, quite stupid. It was sequel made for the purpose of having sequel. Don't waste your time reading this book.
Rating: Summary: More Charlie and Willy Wonka. Review: After having read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory together with my six year old daughter she absolutely wanted to hear more about Charlie and the fantastic factory he got from Willy Wonka. The Great Glass Elevator can not be compared to the first book though, and is probably written for kids much older than my daughter. The plot is too difficult to understand, and especially all the talk about the American president and his advisers does not make any sense - at least not for a kid. We still meet the same Willy Wonka though, the charming, totally crazy man and all his mad ideas. So inspite of the difficult plot part of the book is quite good. My daughter especially liked the part where the grandparents are given the Wonka-Vite pills that will make them 20 years younger, and the fight between the olds to get most pills. But it is dissappointing that such a small part of the book is spent in the chocoalte factory. At least for young kids a sweet factory is much more a place of their dreams than flying around in outer space in a glass elevator. Not among Dahl's best book, but still a good read, especially to read together with a book loving child.
Rating: Summary: Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator book review Review: After the Prequel, Charlie and Mr. Wonka and the crew are left in the Great Glass Elevator. In the sequel, (they're still in the elevator,)they find the Grea Space Hoteland the Commuter Capsule in space. They decide to be th first ones to to enter the Space Hotel, so they go inside. Inside, they find the Vermicious Knids.(a kind of green-brown upside down eggs with eyes) So they scream run away back into the elevator. There are Knids everywhere! Even outside the Hotel! But fortunately, the Elevator is Knid-proof. The Elevator flies all the way around the world, but they end up where they left! They decide to save the Commuter capsule, so they hook onto it with Knid-proof rope, and fly back to the Earth, unhooking from the Capsule and the Elevator ends up in the Chocolate Factory. I liked this book alot bcause it's funny. Roald Dhal always writes funny, confusing, and imaginary books. I also liked his "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." (hint hint hint, READ THE BOOK!)
Rating: Summary: funny funny funny Review: Charlie and the great glass elevator is a book for all ages. It makes you think of things that never before came to your mind. It is the kind of book that you read for enjoyment and not because you have to. Rauld Dahl uses great imigry and humor to get you hooked on it. He invents new characters that just make you laugh or make you think if that could really happen. This book recieves 6 stars from me but i could only fill out five.
Rating: Summary: A Great Book Review: Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator is a book for kids for a vivid imagination. Charlie is off again with his new book (after Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) that has more excitement and adventure. I would higher hieghts, in space. Charlie has to fight in a vigorous battle, and save his grandma from some far off place. Charlie now owns the Chocolate factory from the first book where Charlie was last seen in the great glass elevator. Roald Dahl made this book you can't put down because of his wording. So run off to the nearest book store, lie down, and prepare for adventure and suspense.
Rating: Summary: best b00k eveR Review: Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator is a good book by Ronald Dahl. My favorite character is Charlie. The story takes place in the chocolate factory. I really didn't learn any thing from this book. Some of the events include blasting up into space, saving souls of grandparents and rescuing the crew of the Space Hotel. I don't want to give the ending away, but it has to do with the President.
Rating: Summary: THIS BOOK WAS GREAT! I LOVED IT! Review: Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator is a GREAT BOOK! It stinked so much I loved it. There is two plotlines that don't go together, which is okay! Commander Dahl(he was a Commander in the RAF during World War 2.), your a genius. I know it got bad reviews, etc., but it was a pleasure reading it, even though Dahl hated writing the thin book.
Rating: Summary: Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator Review: Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator is a sequel to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Willy Wonka takes Charlie and his family on a trip through space in a glass elevator that launches off from the Chocolate factory. Along the way Charlie experiences more excitement and adventure in the Wacky Willy Wonka way. He encounters some Vermicious Knids that stretch their bodies to spell out mean messages. Wonka gives Charlies grandparents a Wonka-Vite pill that makes them twenty years younger. They mistakenly take too many and Grandpa George and Grandma Josephine become babies. ...I enjoyed this book because it is funny and at times it is very touching. This book and all the characters in it are unique and wacky. Especially Willy Wonka himself. It makes you use your imagination. Can you imagine The Vermicious Knids in outer space spelling the words like SCRAM by stretching and curving their bodies? I could. My favorite part of this story was when they were flying through space on the glass elevator. When they encountered the Space Hotel U.S.A. how excited Charlie must have felt. I know how excited I felt when I went on a vacation and stayed at a hotel for the first time. I'm still not over it.
