Summary: Much better than the reviews say
Review: After finishing this book I can only partly understand why folks are disapointed by this book. Yes it is more of a stand alone novel than a part 3, but really how much was there that needed to be said after book 2? Nothing that I could find, so this is a perfectly decent book with a nice suspenseful plot. It is, however, rushed and a bit sloppy in places.
But my goodness moral depravity? Where on earth did that come from? There is nothing of the sort in this book, there is some pragmatic thoughts by characters because of the stubborness and bad decisions made by others that those characters could not prevent. But nothing to suggest such a term as moral depravity.
To sum up it was a fun book with a nice and interesting plot. But I too would have liked another 50-100 pages of plot for a better ending...not just abruptly stopped as it was.

Summary: A fun coming-of-age story
Review: As a stand alone novel, this book has a lot of merit for young readers and for those readers who sometimes need a reminder about what it is like to be that young again. There are a lot of modern coming-of-age tales out there that are set in the very perilous real world. Lackey and Dixon's fantasy setting offers a more colorful and interesting version. Their version allows the readers' imaginations to stretch as they experience growth with the characters. The details of surviving in a tropical rain forest, even without the otherworldly dangers, add to the appeal of the book -- especially for young readers. There are only a couple of sentences that would cause me to hesitate in reading it aloud to other people's children. However, I am looking forward to sharing the story with young people from 12 to 112.

Summary: This is one of my favorite books!
Review: As someone who had a lot to live up to, I could really relate to Blade and Tad's struggle to prove themselves. I loved the suspense of being stalked by an invisible enemy. It was impossible to put down! And I loved the description and innovation of what they did to survive in hostile territory. This book is more of a suspense book than an action book, but it is definitely worth more than the money it costs to buy it. Best of all, it's one of those books that you can return to every few months and enjoy all over again! This is definitely some of Mercedes Lackey's best work.

Summary: A Very Poor Showing
Review: Having read and enjoyed the first two books in the trilogy, I was really looking forward to the conclusion. I needn't have bothered. Somehow I got the feeling that Lackey was just churning this one out to get it done. It was very poorly written. My advice: get it from the library if you really want to read it. You'll be glad you didn't waste your money on this one.

Summary: Unfortunately weak
Review: I am a big fan of Mercedes Lackey, especially the Valdemar series books. I truely enjoyed Black Gryphon and White Gryphon. Unfortunately, the third book in the series, Silver Gryphon, is definately the weakest of that series. It is intended as a kind of "Passing on to the next generation" story, but it doesn't pull it off well. The impression that I got was that Misty and Larry tried to take a short story concept and build it up into a novel. Die hard fans will like that there is some continuation of the base characters from the first two novels, but as a whole, I would have much prefered the third in the trilogy to bring more closure to the story.

Summary: Not as good as the previous 2
Review: I didn't think this book was as good as Black or White Gryphon. Although I enjoyed reading about Tad and Blade, I would have much preffered to hear more about the Haighliegh empire, which got me interested in a line from Storm Warning "The Eastern Empire expanded south until they hit an older, more established Empire". Was that the Haighlei?

Other than that, I thought the book moved too slowly, and I finished it in no time at all, but with a sense of feeling like I had only started.

Oh the whole, not one of Misty's best efforts I'm afrai

Summary: Not even close to good.
Review: I feel like Larry Dixon must have written most of this book. This acts like there was one event, and they tried to turn it into a whole book. There is little or nothing about the Black griffon and his mate in this book, and it does not add to the story line. The black griffon was an excellent read, and if you like it, you won't like this book. I think this was the first time I returned/traded off a M. Lackey book.

That said, this author is one of my favorites, with series I read and re-read over and over, discovering new things each time. Please check out the first book in this series, or any other of her books.

Summary: Newcomer to Valdemar
Review: I have just begun reading Lackey's work by reading the Mage Wars Trilogy. Right now, I am in the middle of reading The White Gryphon and I love it. The entire plot and history of the Mage Wars pulled me in from the start and this book is no exception. Skan is by far one of my favourite characters in ANY fantasy setting and I will be sad to say good bye to him once I finish reading this book. But, although I bought my books at a used bookstore, it was well worth the money. Highly entertaining, full of REAL characters, dilemas, problems, upsets, and hopefully a really good ending.

Summary: Worst Lackey I have read
Review: I have read many of her works; this is the only one I sold due to its extreme poor quality and its moral depravity. I realize that most Lackey books are light fun and occasionally you get a gem like Magic's Pawn. Not only is this particular book badly written and kind of dull, it shows two good characters from earlier books as horribly callous. Her healer character threatens to use confidential information to blackmail his former friends. Said healer and the black gryphon, protagonists and "good guys," blithely let their companions die in the woods and judge them worthy of this fate because of their supposed incompetence, even though the two "heroes" plainly contributed to the debacle. This is supposedly OK because they are only responsible for people they care about. After saving their own skins and those of their children, we have a happy ending despite the consequences to others. Read the first two books in this triology, plus the Pawn trilogy and the Arrows trilogy. Give the other Valdemars a pass unless you are an addicted fan.

Summary: Okay but not wonderful
Review: I have to agree with previous reviews: this book would have been better as a short story. It seems like one idea is stretched out to make it long enough to be a book. It also doesn't go into the Valdemar universe to the same depth that the previous books did. I like Mercedes Lackey, but this isn't one of her best books.
