Rating: Summary: E-Z to read....Hard to master? Review: I liked this book, not a great piece of literary work but good none the less.On ground level it spits in the face of bigots, racisits, sexists, and extremists in general, if not tounge in cheek. If you speed read this, get lost in the story, or "skim" the pages you will miss it and think otherwise that it is just action, sex, and sci-fi.When in fact the sex and action are innuendo,Heinlein sets you up, your fancy fills in the rest.On the sublevel we see railgun transprotion, the world wide web, and governments of extreme states battling for power with each other and corporations.Sound too familar? Read it.
Rating: Summary: a great modern science fiction novel Review: Tuesday, September 01, 1998Friday, a book you can never forget. A very modern Heinlein wrote this book. In my view Robert Heinlein was two SCI FI writers in the same body. His books before 1960 were more traditional, if Science Fiction has a tradition. At least the books written by Heinlein before 1960 had no sex in them, at least the ones I have read. After 1960, sex sex sex, in many books. Friday was one of these modern SCI FI books with plenty of sexual overtones. I sometimes wondered if Robert Heinlein was ahead of his time, and did some mind changing drugs before 1960. His great books reflected a man who had changed greatly, the books he wrote after 1960. And Friday is certainly on of these books that showed his great change in mindset, and writing style. I kind of joke when I say that just before 1960 Robert Heinlein must have done some drugs that made him normal. But in many ways, Heinlein was more in touch with the real world after 1960. To me there is a kind of stark realism in Friday. Yet the character, Friday, is a very loveable person, who is beautiful, dynamic, and very sexy. She is a woman of the future in that there is total liberation for womanhood in her. The Plot is neat, and yet in some ways is not a plot, in the sense of Classical Plotting. It is more or less a series of events that are very interesting. In Heinlein's books before 1960, there was always the classical plot. Friday has a great SCI FI prediction in air travel that is now being considered by Boeing Aircraft, and will someday become reality. Robert Heinlein was ahead of his time, of this there can be no doubt. He was a great Scientific Visionary. Heinlein was also one of the greatest writers of all time, in my eyes. Friday is very modern Fiction, Science Fiction. Heinlein never became stale in his writing. He was always changing with the times, and Friday Reflects his ability to change, to have a current writing style after writing for many years and always putting out great fiction, with many wonderful concepts and eternal truths. There is nothing trivial in any of Robert Heinlein's books, and that includes Friday. Friday would make another great Heinlein movie. One creates a movie in their mind when they read this intriguing and imaginative Science Fiction Novel. Friday is must reading for Robert Heinlein Fans, and modern thinkers of all kinds who have the imagination for the enjoyment of science fiction.
Rating: Summary: Thought-Provoking PLUS Cover-to-cover entertainment! Review: I am a Heinlein fan, and this is definately one of the top five Heinlein books. Rife with social commentary, scientific factiods, and nifty ideas, Friday will hold the thinking person's interest easily and provide lots of curious and revolutionary theories to mull over afterwards. Beware, however, that this isn't as "tight" as _Stranger in a Strange Land_; it's slight lack of focus is the only reason it didn't get five stars. But don't let that keep you from buying this one; it's an enormously fun read- well worth your time and your dollars.
Rating: Summary: My favorite Heinlein book ever Review: This was probably the tenth of all RAH's books I've read, and in my opinion one of the very best. The plot takes us on twists and turns like I've missed since The Puppet Masters. Friday is an adicting secret courier with above human skills and problems. At times funny and always interesting, a must read!
Rating: Summary: Trashy fun. Review: Not great literature, not insightful writing, but trashy, adolescent, smutty fun. If you're not expecting more, you should enjoy it.
Rating: Summary: A great book for adolescent boys Review: I remember reading this as a boy and loving it. I remember in having action and sex. Maybe not PC but fun reading.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic book! Get it and read it! Review: This is one of my favorite books of all time. Friday is an intelligent, witty, sassy woman with attitude. It is unfortunate that a particular event in Friday's life involving sexuality takes up so much unwarrented space. The "rape" which is refered to during any controversial discussion occured during the torture and interrogation of a captured intelligence agent - and as such, Friday called upon her training as an agent of an espionage agency to keep her head screwed on straight, in spite of what barbarous things these thugs decided to do to her. Let's cut out the nonsense and recognize Friday for the strong woman (and intelligence agent) she is. Also, why is it that when a woman wants to be pregnant and stay home with the kids, she's "anti-woman," but when she wants a career and wants to remain childless, she's a '90s woman?
I recommend you go and get this book!
Rating: Summary: Taking Heinlein in Context Review: This is in response to an earlier review discussing the "un-PC" nature of Heinlein's works, and the reasons behind his views. Heinlein is well known for the unconventional social commentary present within his books. Friday is no exception. I read Friday when I was fifteen. I am female, and I found many of the ideas expressed to be offensive. I also found many of the ideas to be ahead of their time and have adopted them into my own philosophy. Whenever one reads Heinlein, or any author, it is necessary to place the work in it's appropriate cultural context. This does not mean that anything that is written is justifiable simply because it was considered "right at the time", as another review seems to imply. It means that in reading anything, including past and current works, we must understand the motives and bias of the author. As readers, we have the ability to see more perhaps than the author intended. We have the discretion to take the good, reject the bad, and learn something about ourselves and the author in the process.
Rating: Summary: My favorite Heinlein book ! Review: If you are here you already know the controversy this book causes. While this is arguably not his best work by far, it is my very favorite Heinlein book, never the less. I've read just about every book he's written and this one has the best, most entertaining story line. It is a no-brainer with a lot of action, a lot of humor and a lot of sex. And, just like ALL of his other books, it has a prejudiced and chauvanist viewpoint. Bottom line - if it causes this much argument, isn't it worth your time to read it and make up your own mind about it ?
Rating: Summary: Great comic-book read Review: The book is a fun read with a strong female protagonist. Friday is a kind of super-star, wunderkind, genius, similar to Modesty-Blaise. The book is plot-driven action with lots of cliff-hanger. But then Friday's support team begins to shatter and the author seems to lose his way as well. The book devolves into a character study and Heinlein just cannot make it hold together. Friday becomes a person who yearns to be barefoot, pregnant, and in the kitchen. This goes beyond the usual science fiction requirement for suspension of dis-believe and into the land of defective b-s detector. But still better than average intertainment.
