Rating: Summary: ferociously clever old time spooky story for kids Review: This is an elegant, clever and thoroughly entertaing book for kids 8-13. Nicely illustrated in B&W. Fun to read to your kid too.
Rating: Summary: Great Halloween Story Review: This is probably a bit too frightening for younger readers but the middle school age bracket will enjoy it. The story is a very quick read but is a delicious thriller. Readers will be in suspense from the posessed clock figurines chasing the clockmaker and will be excited until the story's end.
Rating: Summary: Scary??? Review: This is the worst book I've read in a long time. It's just boring. The characters have no color, no personality, about them, leaving you really not caring what could happen to them. The summary leads you to believe you are about to embark on an exiting journey with excellent writing, judging by Pullman's other works, but this is the latter of his works as a writer. The book leaves far too little of the characters in it for you to become attachted to them. No offense to those that did, but I did not find it at all scary, while it was supposed to be (another thing that led me to believe it would be a good story.) Pullman either wrote this very early on or when all inspiration was run out, it is as dry as a desert. And that's what I think about it... I like it as much as a cactus in the desert that is the book. Why would anyone waste time and publish this? You could have just given him a nice handshake and a 'Come back with something good, like the Golden Compass. Good day!' and that would be it. Now that I'm done rambling on and on about how bad this book was, just let me say I mean no offence to whoever liked this *catches a tomato aimed for her head* Thanks. (for tomato and attention) Been fun, but I have to leave. Don't read this book, that's my parting phrase. I'd actually rate it less than one star, if there was such a thing.
Rating: Summary: A Tale that Haunts Review: This maybe one of the most interesting and intricately woven children's tale I have ever read. Though the story is dark and rather morbid I think that I child of correct maturity would not be disturbed by this. The book is one that after having been read you constantly look back on and think about the events there in.
Rating: Summary: Great story. If only it were longer! Review: This was a great little book. The only qualm I have is that it is too short. It probably could have been drawn out more. It's a good book to read on an afternoon where you've got a little free time. This book is good for young children--I would say third grade and up, or even first or second grade if your child is a good reader, but the book says reading level four--as well as adults. This is fun for an adult to read if you've got about 45 minutes or so to spare, but know that it's not going to keep you occupied long or provoke deep thoughts or anything. It's just a fun little book!
Rating: Summary: great tale!! Review: This was actually the first book i ever read of Pullman, and i think it's great, i mean it's a lot less "complex" than "his dark materials" but still i definitly recomended it. In fact i read it because it just happened that one of my classmates was reading it so since i had nothing to do i read like two paragraphs and i (literally) had to run and buy it.
