Rating: Summary: Best Book I've Read in a While Review: C.S. Friedman did a sectacular job on this book, hitting many areas within Science Fiction as well as Fantasy. This book appeals to magic lovers and science lovers alike, of which I am both. Her idea of the Fae brings a whole new plane of existance to the idea of 'magic,' although, as the book clearly explains, it is not magic at all. 5 stars from a very critical reader. Excellent job Miss Friedman.
Rating: Summary: brilliant Review: As many of the other reviewers in this genre love to brag, I, too, have read a lot of fantasy. I usually lean towards writers like Tad Williams, David/Leigh Eddings, Robert Jordan, Robin Hobb, Melanie Rawn, and Katharine Kerr (to give you an idea of what kind of reader I am). C.S. Friedman, in her trilogy, has created something so unusual that it swept me off my feet. Her characters are captivating; I found myself as fascinated by the Hunter as the other reviewers on this page seem to have been. The way she uses the traditional fantasy backdrop of a world where magic is a reality and twists it into something so bizarre and unusual, sets the scene for a striking story that questions the boundaries between good and evil even as you, as the reader, are convinced you're rooting for the good guys. It's true that we've seen the very basic plot before, if you want to get to the bare bones; however, there are very very few stories in this world to which you can't do that. The characters, setting, creatures, and details in this world are ones that would make any mundane tale a complete delight. This trilogy comes highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: Simply amazing Review: Read this. You must, especially if you think of fantasy as a normally shallow genre. More than a battle between good and evil, it is a tale of falls from grace, redemption, sacrafice, and a yearning for control. What happens when you pray and God responds? What do you do with that power? This is just *some* of the territory covered in this book and the two others.Yes, it is a trilogy, but if you don't like trilogies give this a try anyway. The first book can stand on its own, though I guarantee you that by the time you finish this you'll want to read the other two. Friedman has captured fascinating characters and planted them into a frighteningly familiar yet still alien world. This book is worth ever second you dedicate to it.
Rating: Summary: Excellent book Review: This book was excellent... When asked to describe it, I have a hard time - there's definite sci-fi thread running through the book, but the predominant mood to me was one of fantasy, and even occasionally horror. The characters were well-thought out and the storyline was intricate. Even more importantly, Gerald Tarrant is just incredible. :) I've read this book over and over just to read about the Hunter!
Rating: Summary: gives a different twist to the classic fantasy/sci-fi book Review: usually when you think about fantasy, you think of dragons and magic and stuff like that. with this book, the fantasy deals with the "fae" and the term sorceror isn't someone that does magic and stuff, but someone that can control the fae, to a degree. i like how in this book, the "good" guy kind of forms an alliance with the "bad" guy. then they go on a quest to save someone they're both concerned about for different reasons. all in all, i enjoyed the book. i hope you did/do too.
Rating: Summary: Over used plot, but still good Review: Black Sun rising had a bit of a run of the mill plot, but it seems to me that there are so many books out there that it's immpossible to come up with a story idea that isn't either improbable or over-used. Some of my friends complained the book was hard to follow. Complex twisting plots are what make books so wonderful. The harder the book, the more your brain has to work to understand it. Like muscles, your brain needs excersise in order to stay fit, and not become flabby from under-use. I am an experienced fantasy reader, and have loved the genre ever since I read Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" as a third grader. Black sun rising was a great book, as well as many other fantasies with over-used story lines. I am a very fast reader, and finished the book in four days. My younger brother and I both loved it (he finished it in two), and he and I feel that the best qualities a book can have are length, and the ability to keep you interested for that length.
Rating: Summary: Gothic sci-fi. Strange but wonderful brew. Review: I've had this book sitting around for years, and finally decided to read it rather than throw it out. A wise choice. Friedman's writing is a joy.
Rating: Summary: great tale of fantasy Review: This book is great. It makes u think at what is evil and what is not. Is Gerald Tarrant really evil or is he just a scientist. ARe is actions justified or are they evil. Damien is like a good boy scout but can he stay that ways while bein with Gerald Tarrant. There are a lot of etrenal conflicks in this great story
Rating: Summary: Probably the best fantasy book I've ever read Review: I feel the entire concept was spectacular. I would love to see a movie made from this book.
Rating: Summary: Worth every second Review: An excellent start to my absolute favorite series. I've never read a more intriguing book or a more interesting series. I found myself just stopping right in the middle of a book to marvel at the complexity of the world. I've never reviewed a book worth five stars, I'm usually a pretty harsh critic, but this one is worth ten. It's amazing how Friedman writes such good stuff. Friedman's my favorite author, I've never read anyone who can top her. I just have one question for the people who gave this novel one star. What book did you read?!!
