Summary: FANTASTIC
Review: My husband bought this book at an airport for something to read on the plane. I picked it up for something to read and could not put it down again! I thought that it was a refreshing change of style the way it went back in time and all the different stories contained within the one story was great.

Summary: Daggerspell
Review: One of the best books I ever read. The entire world and characters are great, with great detail being used. Kerr is able to connect the past with the future in an inter winding story involving many differ characters. I would suggest that any Fantasy fan or any one who likes to read about myths to read this book and the entire series. As the Series progresses so do the characters and story line, revealing the world book by book. It is quite addictive and is one of a kind.

Summary: Outstanding!!!!
Review: One of the best books I have read in a long time. Kerr pulls off the somewhat twisted timelines with ease, wonderfully written. The plot has enough twists to keep it interesting... I just can't stand a book that lets me guess the ending by page 32.

Deverry is a wonderfully created psuedo-Celtic world, with believable three-dimensional characters that the reader truly comes to care about. The currents of dweomer-magic and just a hint of Wiccan beliefs make the book very hard to put down. I recommend it to anyone who loves fantasy, but be warned- you won't be able to resist hunting down the rest of the series!

Summary: I couldn't force myself to finish this book
Review: Rarely do I ever put a book down before finishing it. I'm always curious about the end, I hate wasting my money on an unread book, and invariably, the story draws me in (albeit 300 pages into the novel) and I derive some enjoyment from the experience. This time however, I couldn't force myself to read the last 150 pages in the book.

I didn't really mind the story elements (deviate sexual practices seem to have become a staple in fantasy these days), and I thought the plot was actually quite good, but the writing was horrendous. Kerr used the same phrases over and over (if I had to read that someone was "keening" one more time, I was tempted to chuck the book across my room), throws in misused archaisms with her modern English for whatever reason, and how she was able to get this book published is completely beyond me.

I would never recommend this book to anyone, but do give it two stars for its potential. Placed in the hands of a good editor, it would be a nice read.

Summary: One of the best...
Review: Skimming through some of the other reviews I was upset by some of the comments. I just don't think that these reviewers really understood what was going on. Kerr didn't place the stories of past incarnations in between sections to annoy the reader. They give insight as to how far along one character or another has come along; what they've learned, and what they continue to ignore. Masterfully written that was a welcome change to Jordan's ridiculously pithy Eye of the World series. Overall a very clever book and perhaps my favorite in the series. While other authors tend to get bogged down in characters or overly intricate plots as their series progress, Kerr stays focused.

Summary: Charming and well-crafted
Review: The author has a beautiful eye for the absurd! This book could be enjoyed on many levels: from comedic to straight swords & sorcery, a linguistic study to an endless romance. I loved that there could be a fantasy novel so firmly grounded in reality (you could actually believe that her characters *would* take a leak in the woods).

I was bothered, however, by a feeling that there were two voices in the writing... there was the one voice trying very hard to point out how poetic and spiritual this all was, and then there was another voice trying very hard to edit out all of that so that you didn't feel as though the book were preaching. (no, I am not saying that Katherine Kerr could not have both of these voices inside her own head simultaneuously.)

Summary: One of the best books that I have read in a very long time
Review: The book "Daggerspell" is an awsome book. It takes you into the world where magical creatures live, where lords of lands still rule, and the love between two inocent lovers that were killed. If you like to go back in time to when all the knights and sorcery existed this would be a great book to read. I don't want to spoil it for you, so if it sounds at least the bit interesting you should go out and read it for yourself.

Summary: Dissappointing light fantasy.
Review: The good things: I liked the world Katharine Kerr created. The environment was believable, and beautifully detailed. The Wildfolk were absolutely adorable - I wanted to learn more about them. The story line was nicely woven together, and I liked the way women were depicted in this novel, and the role they had to play in the story.

The bad things: I found the writing style to be quite bland. The descriptions and details were average at best, although the dialogue rang true in many instances. Overall, though, it was quite unmemorable. In addition to that, it all seemed a little too easy to me. The battles didn't seem hard fought. The characters' hardships were somehow always easily resolved, seeming to be nothing more than minor setbacks instead of real problems. As far as themes go, the incest theme bothered me a great deal. I'm not a prudish person, but just the idea of incest makes me squirm. In this novel, the theme wasn't just touched upon; it was explored in depth, making me unable to truly enjoy the depth of the story. The transition between the past and the present was also quite awkward at times.

Overall, I would not recommend this novel. For those who do end up reading it, it should only be read as a fun, light, fantasy novel and with no greater expectations.

Summary: Despite Uneven Writing Worth A Look
Review: This book caught my interest, despite the author's uneven and at times weak writing skills. Kerr has created a wonderful celtic world and culture in Deverrey, with strong if unfully realized characters, and certainly has a story to tell. I simply wish she had taken more time to flesh out her plot and characters. Also, the transitions between time periods that occur are more often awkward than smoothly segued. Nonetheless, there is enough here that is original and captivating that I will continue on with the second book of the series. Furthermore, the author appeared to be reaching her stride by the second half of the work, offering hope that the sketchy storyline and sparse detail that detracts at the start will resolve itself into fuller expression as the tale continues. It's definately worth a read, and I suspect will improve with the telling.

Finally, I must say that many of the reviews I find herein, both for this work as well as others, seem to ignore any proportioned approach or critical evaluation, burdened by an emotional bias that refutes credibility. It beggars belief that every book written deserves either 5 stars or an opposing trashing. It would be nice to see a bit more balance in these reviews, as well as evidence of thoughtful and comparative approach.

Summary: One of the best books I've read in a long time!!!
Review: This book grabbed my attention from the first page. The story had a lot of battle detail and description of the scenery. This book got me hooked on the rest of the series and Katharine Kerr is an excellent author.
