Summary: Good idea. Bad book.
Review: Having read the last three books (couldn't find the first) I kept expecting it to get better. It didn't. It was an excelent idea but are all Germans really evil? Are all English and Americans really good? There were so many subplots it was hard to keep track of what was going on. Each subplot was mentioned in each chapter and many had nothing to do with the main plot. Made you wonder why they were written other that to just fill paper.

Turtledove missed a good opportunity here to write a classic science fiction novel. He would have been better off to mention his idea to someone else and let them write a 600 page novel than meander through 2400 pages himself.

Yup, still read three of the four books and he is spending the royalies he made off me!

Summary: Entertaining but cliche
Review: I enjoyed the book, although a lot of parts were very thinly plotted. The historical background is really lacking in detail. If you are looking for a more in depth WWII alternate history, try Robert Harris "Fatherland". The book is written in a Tom Clancy style (10 groups of characters with the action rotating through each group until they start to come togehter) and is entertaining but doesn't cover a lot of new ground.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: This book is the best from Turtledove.
Review: This book is about the struggle between an alien race, known as the "Race", and the Earth in 1942. The "Race" makes an attack against the World which is right in the middle of World War 2. The different countries of the world have to join together to fight this evil. The book is set around a large group of characters, who are all around the world. They include a girl in China, U.S. minor league baseball player, Russian women who flies planes, etc. There are also 3 alien characters. The action is intense at times. I plan to read the rest of the series, and also recommend the book Guns of the South, which I am currently reading.

Summary: Must read for SCI-FI Alternate Reality buffs!
Review: I couldn't put this down. I hadn't realized it was a series till near the end when things obviously weren't going to wrap up in a few pages. I was both frustrated and overjoyed when I reached the end of this book. Overjoyed because there were sequels to read, frustrated because I didn't have them! Amazon will take care of that. :-)

Summary: Very poor effort, can't believe it's a series!
Review: Little green lizards, none of which seems to have an IQ higher than the temp of ice water, are masters of the universe yet can't whip the mighty Earthlings of the 1940s. Gimme a break! And what's this drivel about them being hooked on Ginger? (The spice, not Tina Louise, though that would be just about as believable) I read this at first thinking it was written along the lines of the "Toxic Spell Dump". You know, a light little comedic romp. Then it dawned on me that Turtledove was actually trying to write a "serious" alt history. Too lame for me. Shine it on!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Excellent book for history buffs and sci-fi fans
Review: Harry Turtledove, master of alternate history, shows his flair for writing with this tome. This book shows what would have occurred had aliens attacked the Earth during World War II. Turtledove's grasp of history shines through with his treatment of major figures (FDR, Churchill, etc.) and weapons. Among the strange things that occur (and they are legion) is a British bombing raid protected by GERMAN fighters. In this first of the Worldwar series, the aliens attack and the Earth desperately tries to unite to repel the otherworldly invaders. Read this book.

Summary: Overrated
Review: This book is overrated by a longshot. If I didn't know any better I could swear that this book wasn't even edited! Turtledove has 50 things going on at once! There are too many characters and too little continuity. I would recommend this book to anyone who has insomnia.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Only, Part good
Review: I thought this would be an Independence Day in the 1940's. At first, the battle scenes are amazingly written, but Turtledove sinks the book with characters that have no real purpose and have meaningless conversations. A pity that a book that is very well written, is killed by dull characters and endless conversations.

Rating: 2 stars
Summary: Very slow
Review: Turtledove certainly has a good grasp of history but the quality of his writing is only so-so. When you combine this with a very long plot development and stereotypical characters it is almost impossible to finish one volume, let alone all four. An editor would have been useful but perhaps the publisher figured enough people would keep paying for the whole series that no editing was needed.

Summary: David Ekstrand, Sweden
Review: This is clearly one of the best books I've ever read, and one definitely notices that Turtledove has done quite a lot of research before writing this book, and it may be difficult to read for those who haven't got a clue as to what WWII was. I loved this book! When "the Race"'s nuclear ship was bombed I found myself shreiking with fierce joy! In the middle of WW II, an alien invasion fleet attacks Earth. However, the aliens expect armored knights to come against them, not armored panzers. The aliens technology are still superior, however, and humanity are in for quite a rough time. This is a must for every SF fan!
