Summary: Where are the historical characters?
Review: To me, the main problem with not only this series but also his "Great War" series, is that we hardly ever see a real historical character - but for advertising purposes, they won't hesitate to try to sucker us in by putting them on the book jacket! Where IS JFK ? Are we supposed to believe that old Joe Kennedy wasn't still trying to get one of his boys elected President? And, especially if because of the Lizards' invasion in '42, young Joe might not have died in '44 ... you see, to me THAT"S REAL "Alternate History" - not just "what if we got invaded during WWII" Where is Nixon? McCarthy? LBJ? Also - I'm REAL tired of this "Stockholm Syndrome" stuff with guys like Sam Yeager being so friendly with the Lizards - it was not his place or duty as an officer in the U.S.Army to discover or divulge the information regarding the attack on the Colonization fleet! He should have been shot as a traitor - hello, these creatures are INVADING our world, Harry - why would we have any interest in getting along with them? I do admit that usig the Lizards as a "savior" of sorts for the Jews and as a buffer with the Nazis works well - it makes sense. But so many of the characters are bland and uninteresting - for many pages on end! It's all like a very dull soap opera - no real punch or lick to it. I agree with the reviewer who suggested that he turn the series over to other writers - maybe they can get it right!

Summary: A good book yes, the end no
Review: Harry has done a great job in creating a thought provoking novel. Lots of loose ends are tied up, problems are solved spectaculary etc. However this is not a conclusion. Well it shows the power of Turtledove's writing that he created a world that keeps pulling you in I want a conclusion. The ending offers too many possibilities. I don't mind this series going on and on (if the plots are thinned down a bit to strengthen the good ones)but if it will end, END IT!

Review: I may be mistaken, but wasn't Kasquit African not Chinese?

Summary: Don't buy it
Review: I thought the series would get to a point, but the title is deceptive. Nothing really new happens, only confirming things that were already hinted at in the last book - the US launched the missile, the asteroid belt will be used as asteroid weapons. It's just 500 pages of Turtledove's repetitive style filled with double negatives and tasteless sex scenes. No new wars happen. Wait until the conclusion really happens in the next book.

Summary: Puts the pieces together
Review: AFTERSHOCKS wraps up the COLONIZATION series pretty well, I think--it certainly answers all the big questions the first two books ask. I was glad to find out what happened to my favorite characters--Sam Yeager and Kassquit especially. Life goes on, like the song says. The 1960's sure look different with Lizards in them.

Summary: a good book..but a average book if it is the conclusion
Review: in this book the main thing that annoyed me was Mr. Turtledove's spelling and grammer problems and incomplete which have been pointed out in other book but up till now i have not realized. Despite this Mr. Turtledove put together a very interesting book and unlike some of the other people who read this book i enjoyed the ginger smuggling incident. I also like how Roundbush got what he deserved at the end. My favorite part about the book though was probaly all the tension surroundign Germany just after the war and how Drukner was ordered to save as many weapons as he can, it was also very clever when he met Goppert used Drukner's asociating with Anielwicz to threaten him to give him info about the third reich's turning in all their weapons. Mr. Turtledoce could have put more info though what happened to Brittian, why didnt they join the german attack against the race, and are they sill on a course to facism. I think Mr. Turtledove needs to add at least one more book in this series to get a clearer view of what happens, mabe he could make it 30 years in the futre how earth finally atacks the racs home world or something like that. Overall this was a good book it its ending was rushed and average so i believe Mr. Turtledove needs to make at leat one more book it this series

Summary: Not the best but I still plowed through it
Review: I consider myself to be a huge Harry Trutledove fan. I have read most of his books and have devoured the Worldwar, Colonization and The Great War series. As soon as this book was available I rushed out to buy it.

While it wasn't a complete disappointment on its own, it will be if this is the end of the series. A better title for this book would have been "The Ginger War". So much time was spent on various ginger smuggling and tasting that it grew tiresome very quickly. (does ANYONE stay in a Lizard jail once arrested?) Over all it seems as if this might be another bridge to a new Worldwar/Colonization series which hopefully will bring us forward a couple more decades and will bring the true conclusion to this series. As it stands now, there is just too much left hanging. The few interesting sub-plots were just overhwelmed by all the ginger crap.

If there will be a new book after this, I suggest you wait until it comes out, buy this one in paperback (it is a fairly quick read; you'll end up skimming much of it) and then pick up with the new books.

I love ya Harry, love the books, but was disappointed with this one.

Summary: Superfluous all the way
Review: Frankly, I was extremely disappointed by this book. Nothing really exciting is happening here - the one event that the first 2/3rd of the book stir at had been - well, let's say overly obvious - nothing that one couldn't have known since two books before. And the other "surprise" isn't "revealed" until the last page (also, this was obvious all along). No famous people except for Molotov (OK, and those 2 or so people around him). No real "alternate" anywhere. A very boring book. And, oh no, the end leaves enough room for a possible sequel - please Mr. Turtledove - no more! Don't get me wrong: When the very first book came out in 94 I enjoyed it VERY VERY much. This was true for the next 2 or 3 books - after that: Downhill. And this is the low so far in my opinion. Superfluous all the way.

Summary: Wow! Turtledove does it again!
Review: What a great book. Just another wonderful one is a whole spectacular series. Turtledove's ability to create a life-like alternate universe never ceases to amaze! Can't wait for the next one!!

Summary: Is this a "conclusion" to the series?
Review: I generally look forward to the continuing novels in this series by Harry Turtledove. The ongoing conflict between "the race" (lizards) and mankind is an interesting "gedanken" experiment. The setting of this particular episode is the mid 1960's and mankind has both created new technology ad also "borrowed" from the lizards creating an uneasy balance of power on Tosev 3. Most,if not all,of the old familiar faces are present in their usual roles. That in my view is the major problem with this book. I am getting a bit tired of Rance Auerbach and Penny Summers being tossed into the lizard clink for ginger smuggling. What leads me to believe that we have yet one more episode in this series is the lack of a real closure to the story or a real conclusion. We are left scratching our collective heads about Hans Drucker and the Reich. We wonder if Monique Doutard was really serious for her reasons stated to Ttomalis for getting Rance Auerbach out of lizard jail. Dr. Turtledove needs to spend a little more time on this series and get a real rousing wrap-up. He needs to speed up the pace of action and concentrate more on the main theme of lizard-human conflict instead of Kassequit and her eternal self-introspection and whining. I would expect a return to open warfare and alot more from Lewis and Clark/Glen Johnson. Overall, a good concept for a series, but a real letdown in some of the execution. Could have been a 5-star if better paced with some real action leading to a conclusion. It would help if some of the less essential characters were "retired".I strongly suspect that volume 4 in this series is in the works;if not,it needs to be.
