Summary: Average but readable - I would read it again. In 10 years
Review: This is a good book. If you are interested in a better fleshed out plot and stronger characters ready the Janny Wurtz/Raymond E Fiest "of the Empire" trilogy. I found some common plot threads through the two series which really annoyed me.

In regards to the book itself, the beginning is two slow and drags in several parts of the novel. A nice environmental touch to it as well. In several places their are minor inconsitencies with the characters and "glossing over's" of some major points which I found irritating in hind-sight.

I borrowed the book, and if you want to read it, i suggest you do to.

Review: Awe and wonder. Magic based on sunlight and moonlight. Golden dragons soaring through the sky, high court intrigue. We'd seem to have all the makings of a fantastic story here.

Why, then, does the author almost completely ignore them to focus on who's got a crush on who? The main characters fall deeply in love at first sight and spend most of the book defending their claim so they can build a life together. Aaaaawww. Everyone's got an attractive son or daughter (or two or three or twelve) they want to fix up with their friends' kids. How cute. Everyone has all the money and wealth they need to provide a castle or two for each kid since we only deal with royalty (or whatever passes for it in this world). Apparently there exists no working class apart from personal servants. Ah well, they were probably such a nuisance to write about, having real jobs and all.

But wait, there has to be a villain to be dealt with. Toss in some nasty high prince. Don't bother giving him a personality, just keep insisting he's the villain. Have him do evil things that are never explained. Give no insight to his personality - that might complicate things. His kids have to be nasty too, because that's inherited, right? Have them cause all kinds of trouble for our heroes to get out of. Add lots (ok, a fair amount) of sex to keep people interested. Have everything wrap up the same way you'd expect from any Disney movie, only with much more violence. Keep introducing dozens more characters so the ones that live can all hook up in pairs and settle down happily in love like they're living in a Celine Dion song.

If you're looking for a generic adolescent 'drama' blended with an impressive fantasy setting, pick this up. Melanie's apparently got a third trilogy in the works, but there's been nothing new in quite some time. She's probably too busy writing for Dawson's Creek or something.

Summary: Dragon Prince
Review: This is a good book overall. I like the way that Ms. Rawn gives you an overview of the characters. I became attached to the characters since the beginning of this book. I don't however like the way that she skips what happens in 6 years or how Ms. Rawn doesn't focus on the dragons very much. This is a good fantasy book, I think there is a little realism to this. it is a people book and good overall. There are just a couple of things that i would change if i was her but other than this is very good and pretty well writen. You can see what's happening as if it's happening right in front of you. I enjoyed this book and plan to finish the series

Summary: a great book
Review: This book is, no doubt, great. The magical ideas are fresh and original, not reverting to old, cliche' ideas. The characters are real people... Of course, they are mostly handsome aristocrats, however, that's what the story is about, that is who rules. There are no stereotypes here, the hero and heroine succumb to almost tragic character flaws, the villains are not wholly bent on evil and are respected in their own right. The only flaws I can think is the reliance on predestination. The sunrunners (basically magicians)are born with it, no choices, all of the love interests are inevitable, they're fated to be with one another-yawn. And throughout, especially at the begginning, the the book has a large emphasis on sexuality. Not to say it doesn't exist in large parts, it's just too much. The princes with their petty claims, and seeking of pairings for marriage alliances is real, and believable. The beautiful writing style that pervades this book is a delight, and you will find yourself addicted to the book, unable to put the book down for fear the magic will end. In truth, Dragon Prince is unable to completely seperate itself from the stereotypical fantasy genere, but it does in enough ways to make it a fresh, enjoyable, and addicting read

Summary: Fantasy, Romance, and yes, Dragons
Review: Despite what some readers from PA believe, this is a fine fantasy novel with a believable, consistent, magical basis that honors traditional fantasy works without simply falling for old fashioned cliches. (The connection between Dragons and their traditional hordes of gold is priceless in and of itself.)Yes, there are a bunch of attractive people in the book (heroes and villains alike are too good-looking to be true), but more important than their "perfect" looks is the fact they act and react like real people--honest, dishonest, loving, jealous, angry, and fallible--they aren't the perfect cardboard cut-out characters that litter so many fantasy novels. They grow; they change; they make mistakes (some BIG ones); and, they go on with their lives. Admittedly, this is the weakest of Rawn's Dragon Books. Her Dragon Star trilogy clearly shows how she was growing as a writer, but the Dragon Prince and the rest of his trilogy was not a bad way for her to start.

Summary: My ALL-TIME Favorite!
Review: I have to say that this is the finest fantasy series I have ever read. The characters, the world they live in and everything about the books are very well developed and the writting is so detailed you can see, smell, taste and feel everything Melanie Rawn describes in them. The plot is complex and interesting, yet easy to follow, and my only complaint about the series is that there were only six books. I hope to see more in the series in the future!

Summary: T.A.'s review
Review: Lady Sioned is sent by Lady Andrade of Godess Keep to marry Andrade's nephew Prince Rohan of the Desert. But the High Prince Roelstra of Princemarch wants Prince Rohan to marry one of his 17 daughters. Roelstra is an evil man and has had 7 mistresses, and has wanted a son for a long time, but can't seem to get one. But being the vicious snake that he is, he decides to marry one of his daughters off to Rohan. Roelstra's daughter's are just as devious as he is and realise that the reason Roelstra is so eager to marry one of them off to Rohan is because he wants one of his daughters to bear Rohan a son that will become ruler of Princemarch as well as the desert. But Rohan is very smart, and realizes Roelstra's plan. Roelstra's daughters are very beautiful and very good at hiding their cunning, which is why Rohan is so glad he met Sioned, because if he hadn't fallen in love with Sioned, Ianthe, one of Roelstra's daughters, would have been absolutley irresistable. But because Rohan is so smart, he pretends to be very, very stupid and consider one of Roelstra's daughters, while making Roelstra sign peace treaties and pretending not to be the least bit interested in Sioned. And Sioned pretends not to be the least bit interested in Rohan either. After Roelstra's done signing all the peace treaties he doesn't marry any of Roelstra's daughters and marries Sioned instead.

But Princeess Ianthe gets very mad at Rohan for rejecting her. So she captures Prince Rohan and gets pregnet with his child. Once the child is born Sioned kills Ianthe and claims the child as her own. While Ianthe was pregnet Rohan and Sioned were hwaving some problems in their relationship, but Ianthe's son who Sioned named Pol, although just a baby, bought Rohn and Sioned closer together.

Summary: Hackneyed and Ill Conceived
Review: I agree with the previous reviewer. The characters are one dimensional. The evil people are purely evil, no one is a shade of grey, everything is done in black and white.

One of the saddest, most pathetic things I ever saw was what the main female character had to do to become a woman. At the age of 16, she, like all Sunrunners, must have sex in the dark with a strange man she has never met, thereby losing her virginity. Doesn't this author know having sex does not make you a woman? What kind of message is she trying to convey to young girls? You are not a woman until you have sex and it may as well be with a stranger if you are not yet in love with someone you know. I thought it was sick.

Summary: Dragon Prince... a book of ages
Review: Melanie, if you ever read this... I just want you to know how your book impacted my life. I am a student at Rutgers University and I help teach a few history classes. I love to read and in high school I read all six of the Dragon Prince Novels. I write myself and hopefully I will one day have an effect on people like you have been able too. Rohan and Sioned are good role models... especially for somebody who hasn't had the easiest of lives. To this day I don't think I have read a finer series of books. Others might disagree, but Rohan helped me find something in myself that has helped me to be a better person. I thank you for bringing him to me. I would love to correspond with you if at all possible. Thank you for your time. tucci19@hotmail.com
