Rating: Summary: Warning: This book is IMPOSSIBLE to put down!! Review: I've always read fantasy, and I've read alot of it but nothing,
And I sincerly mean NOTHING, compares to the Masterpiece that
is "Dragon Prince". Melanie her story come to life with great
use of descriptive/narrative write. Written from her own
Omnipotent point of view, She makes you feel as if you are
part of the book itself and not mearly "reading" it. The characters tend to become your friends, and when you finish reading the books, you start to miss each of them, and you'll
start reading them all over again. I know, I've read the whole
series thrice all ready. If you like Magic, History, Secrets, and a True Love story,
this book is the best!!!!
Rating: Summary: One of the best fantasy novels ever written Review: If you like any kind of fantasy or romance novel, then this is the one for you. It's packed with romance, intrigue, ruthlessness and a little war mixed in for good measure
Rating: Summary: This is a book for those with fantasy in their blood Review: This is one of the best books that I have read in quite a while.
I don't normally have the time to read all of the books that I
would like to, and they aren't always fantasy, but this book caught
my interests and imagination from the very beginning. I hadn't
previously had that inclination that "I just couldn't put it down!",
but it has made me a believer. It incorporates everything (and a few surprises) that a great story line needs. I enjoy reading a book or seeing a movie
before I really hear much about the story line, so I will leave the
story up to your uncovering as I am sure that you will do so with
great haste. It is definitely one od the best that I have yet
read. A MUST READ!!
Rating: Summary: A must for fantasy and romance lovers! Review: Melanie Rawn has brought us many innovative and magical books throughtout the years. The first in The Dragon Prince series is "Dragon Prince." The protagonist Rohan and his Sunrunner Sioned are delightfully life-like. Through their intial struggles, the reader becomes enthralled by their world, one of intreuge, politcs, magic, and love. When you finish this book you will definately want to read the others of this series
Rating: Summary: The most spectacular display of writing. Review: I think Melanie Rawn's books are positivley spectacular. In this book
she ties in all the important points of writing, drama, suspense, surprise, politics, comedy, and realistic
potrails of characters and places. I would tell anyone that this book is a number one, top of the
line, best-seller!
Rating: Summary: You won't want to put it down. Review: I just loved this book and all that follow it. Melanie Rawn
writes so well that you get to know the character personnaly.
The whole series of books just kept me facinated. There is everything in this book love, war, and hate. I would read them again.
Rating: Summary: spellbinding & captivating Review: Melanie writes with a delightful mixture of emotional context. She delves into the wells of hate, anger, pain, and all the dark
emotions that bring out our own strong feeling, but is also
able to delicately weave good humor, courage, love, and the lighter side of our hearts into the golden pattern of her
stories. Her books are captivating as well as enchanting, and
make one eager to pick up the next one as soon as the first
has told its tale.
Rating: Summary: ORIGINAL, INSPIRING, MAGICAL GOOFY-GIGGLY FUN! Review: This was the first book I ever read in the "fantasy" section. I think I owe a great debt to this author for lighting a fire under me. Helping me realize what I am missing by not entering "her" world---she made me want to READ READ READ again.I have read the whole series of six books and EVERY book written by Melanie Rawn. She is amazing. The two main characters Rohan and Sioned are the perfect instrument, ready to fine tune your imagination. I found myself wondering over and over again (while reading this book) "how does she come up with all these wonderful characters and plots?" I am a writer and I consider her an exceptional example of what a true gift writing can be. The only thing I can say negatively about this series of 6 books is that it is hard letting go of the characters who die. Hard because you know them SO WELL, because of Melanie's great sense of humor and wonderful writing style. I would recommend this book (and the series) to anyone who is looking for a WONDERFUL story. Sometimes you just need to close your eyes and open your mind into another world.
Rating: Summary: Great writer, poor storyteller. Review: I bought this on recommendation of my cousin. We're not speaking anymore. Seriously though, Rawn is an excellent writer. She has wonderful descriptions, her characters are real, and the relationships are filled with a genuine give and take of emotions. However. I have several problems with the book. First was the romance. I have nothing against romance in my fantasy. More often than not it adds a needed poignancy to an epic. I just didn't plan on reading a novel that was more romance than anything else. The fantasy aspect of the book, just seems more like background, and scenery. I much prefer a book that uses that fantasy to take a unique look into human nature. This was more of a straight up romance novel during medieval times with some dragons and magic in it. Second was the nigh-glacial pacing. Oh brother. I felt like I was reading in slow motion. Let me give you a quick summary here. The book begins with the ruler of the land taking a mortal wound and slowly dying. His son is about to ascend to the throne, and although he is a proven fighter, most question his ability to rule since he's a bookish type. He also must soon marry, but if he marrys one of his liege lord's daughters he won't survive much past the birth of his first male child. So his aunt, the leader of the books mage clan (sunrunners), arranges for him to marry one of her young apprentices. The two meet and instantly fall in love. Yet because the wily hero has machinations of his own in mind they can't show it in public. He intends to fool everyone and get something out of it from his liege lord at the 3 year fair who he's supposed to be picking a bride from as well. Eventually they get out of the castle and head off to the fair. That my friends is the first 180 pages. 180 pages! Sheesh! Lastly is the narrative vs. dialogue mix which is overly heavy on the narrative side by about 8 to 1. Melanie seems to want to tell us more often than show us. Therefore I cannot recommend this book by an excellent writer. Unless you like a heavy (and I mean heavy) dose of romance in your reading.
Rating: Summary: Great politics Review: I read this book (and this series) for the first time nearly twenty years ago. Every decade or so I bring it out for a re-read, and I think that's a real compliment to the author and a statement about the book. One of the reader-reviews below complains about the romance in the book, but what I recall the most (after a 10-year "separation") is the politics...there's so much politicking going on in this book, and that adds an extra dimension to what is otherwise a "typical" adventure-driven fantasy format (i.e., princes, magic, and dragons). It could also be why some people don't feel that it is a fast-paced book. It isn't, necessarily...but that doesn't mean there's not a lot going on. I definitely recommend Dragon Prince and the rest of the series if you are a genre fan who enjoys a bit of chess with your sword-fighting.
