Summary: Wonderful, if a bit slow at times.
Review: Rawn has done a wonderful job of telling the story of Prince Rohan cominginto his own. However, the book drags at places. Though I have yet to read the other books in this trilogy, I am greatly anticipating doing so. I can't wait to read what happens next to Rohan, Sioned, and Pol. Way to go Ms. Rawn!!

Summary: this book continues a stupid modern trend.....
Review: This series, and anything else Ms. Rawn has written, do nothing but confirm my conviction that most fantasy literature written by women is utter trash. Now hold on, before some of you raise the ugly specter of "sexism", I want you to know that I have absolutely nothing against women. Nothing at all. It's just that many female fantasy writers have this strange attatchment to this "goddess" notion. I can't call to mind even one famous female fantasy writer who hasn't included pseudo-"wicca" or some other from of goddess-worship in their work. Cases in point: Marion Zimmer Bradley, Diana Paxson, Melanie Rawn.... The list goes on and on. I don't know. Maybe it satisfies some deep-down need of these women to insult men by throwing this feminist fantasy in our faces at every turn. Rawn in particular seems to hold a grudge against "patriarchy". Exiles is ample proof of that. So is her short story: Salve, Regina (that story is just pure, evil vindictiveness). I mean, come on! That male/female role-reversal idea has been done to death! Why not break new literary ground with an original idea? I'll tell you why. She has an agenda.

Summary: Absolutly the best book I have ever read!!!
Review: I started the series because I liked the cover. Little did I know that this was a large series and the smallest book was just a few pages shy of 500. By far this is my favorite book, I recommend it to everyone I meet. Everyone that has read it agrees with me at how remarkable it is. I like the fact that there is a character for everyone. What I mean is that there is a character that could easily be you if you existed in this book. I happened to relate to Rohan so that is probably why I love this book. Melanie Rawn also writes with so much detail I can easily close my eyes and see all of the characters and also all of the locations that they go to. I recommend this book to all.

Summary: One of the best books ever!!!
Review: This book is one of the best I have ever read. Everything about it is amazing. The characters in particular are superb. Each character is meticously described and developed. If there is anything I could find wrong with the series is that all my favorite characters died. Not that this is really a bad thing, most authors don't have the guts to kill off the major characters. If you have not read it, read it, read it, read it

Summary: An excellent read
Review: Melanie Rawn is GOOD! I was hooked on The Dragon Prince from page one. At first, I was extremely confused, not being a frequent fantasy reader. I was totally confused by the Sunrunners and I wasn't quite sure what was going on with Zehava and Roelstra. But I gave it a try, and it was definetly worth it.

Summary: The rating is for the series (Both of them)
Review: I have been an avid reader of SF/Fantasy for many years. My wife bought me this book because of the cover, and I struggled through it in about 3 weeks. It was totaly outside my concept of the genre. The hereos were a mixture of good and evil and the story delt more with court politics than magic.

It was a year and a half later that I decided to read it again, and then read the second book. At this point I relised that Melanie Rawn had breeched new teritory in the genra, and created something never seen before. The characters and the plot were the focus not the magic. After relising this I was unable to put the entire series down. It was new, it was different, and it was great.

The only drawback that keeps it from getting 5 stars is that in some parts it is slow because of the vast number of characters introduced and developed.

I highly recomend it to all SF/F fans with an open mind to something like you have never read before.

Summary: The BEST BOOK EVER...
Review: I have to say, no book has ever had such an effect on me. All the characters are perfectly done, and I have to disagree with one person saying that Rohan is almost totally good and his supposed barbarity - Rohan is arrogant (shock! horror!) enough to think that he could be better than most people, or maybe different would be another word. I think he is the most perfect, well done character I have ever come across. I think the other chracters are good also, though Kazander maybe a little off - but then Rawn did describe him as a madman! Sioned, next to Rohan, is probably the most interesting character in the entire series. Her willingness to kill to protect her own, her betrayal of Pol's would-be future, and her love for Rohan and Pol. I would go as far as saying she is my perfect woman! It really doesn't matter whether you like fantasy or not - this book should appeal to everyone, simply because the characters lives and the problems they face might strike a chord in ourselves, and how we would react in those situations. At least try it - if you like a good story that questions itself and life in general, then read it.

Summary: Very good
Review: These comments are really meant to refer to the series as a whole, rather than just this volume. All in all, a long but enjoyable read. Don't try to rush this series--there are so many characters, you can easily get lost if you read too quickly. Mostly well-drawn characters, some more likeable than others. Not really a plot-driven series, though, more of a "well, let's see how this world develops" sort of feel, which isn't bad, as long as you know what to expect. My favorite aspect of this series, though, and the quality that stood out the most for me is Rawn's willingness to kill off characters. ANY character is expendable in Rawn's world, and when someone gets into a hairy situation, you really don't know whether or not they will make it out. I frankly wish more authors would take this approach; so often in fantasy, you get the "oh-I-know-it-looks-bad,-but-I-know-he'll-get-out-of-it-somehow" attitude. Likewise, in most fantasy, if main characters are killed off, it usually happens near the end of the novel, and is so "heroic tragic" that you usually know which characters are set up to die 3 pages after they're introduced into the story. Rawn totally defies these conventions, and major as well as minor characters die throughout the series. Heck, early in the first novel a plague wipes out a significant number of the characters you've just started growing fond of. This unusual daring is the sole factor that made this a "stand-out" series for me. The woman has guts!

Summary: Terrible. Absolutely terrible.
Review: I don't know what the other people here are thinking. This book sucks. I couldn't distinguish one character from another. They were all the same. The "good" characters were like saints, while the "bad" characters were so pathetic and easy to defeat, I actually fell asleep when I was reading the scene where the good guys win. If you have a dragon fetish, take a peak at the cover. If you like to read books, read something with plot. Melanie Rawn needs to go back to kindergarten.

Summary: First book in a great series
Review: I admit to being a little puzzled by some of the vehement criticism this book received. Granted, the characters may not be the most realistic ones I've ever come across, but then, I thought that was the point to the concept of "fantasy". Personally, I didn't think the characters were as over-romanticized as some seem to think, because the relationships _aren't_ always picture-perfect. There are conflicts, and conflicts are what makes a story interesting. *I* found Rawn's story to be extremely intriguing, and the plot pulled me right in, along with several of my friends. Since money is tight, I am very selective about what books I buy, but this entire series and also the Dragon Star series are on my bookshelf, and they're there to stay.
