Rating: Summary: Great Book! Review: I loved this book. Personally, I've seen the movie 3 times already (due to change to higher number soon). The 2nd time I saw the movie, I went and brought the book. It was worth every cent. Now, I was introduced to Star Wars when I was four. My grandmother had it at her house and I thought it was scary as anything. My brother got it for his 7th birthday (when I was nine) and we watched all of them straight through and I finally understood the plot. Then I was hooked. My dad started to let me read the Star Wars books. I enjoyed most of them (save some Kevin J. Anderson books). Until this day, my favorite SW book is "Jedi Under Seige", surprisingly by Kevin J. Anderson/Rebecca Moesta. When the new movie came out, my friend and I skipped school to see it. For those of you who haven't seen it, get off the internet, get your shoes on, and haul your butt to the nearest threater showing Episode One. The book, in my opinion is just as good as the movie, which was killer. Terry Brooks is a talented writer (unlike some. I'm not mentioning any names, Ms. J. V. Jones. And Mr. Kevin J. Anderson (Adult Star Wars)) and keeps strictly to a plot line. He doesn't give away any secrets about the movie until they're supposed to be given (Sound familiar, Ms. P. C. Wrede?).The one problem I had was that the battles could have been more descriptive. As an unpublished novelist, I'll say firsthand that battles ARE hard to do, but when you're doing Star Wars, blood and gore, and lightsabers, and ships, and big explosions work. Thank you and have a nice day.
Rating: Summary: Unless you want a verbatim rehash of the movie, don't bother Review: Most novels suffer when they are made into movies, simply because a good novel usually has a lot more characters, dialogue, scenes, action, and description than will fit into a two-hour movie. Think of Dune, for example. Sad to say, if Lucas had taken Brooks' novel as the basis for the Phantom Menace, instead of the other way around, next to nothing would have been lost. Aside from a couple of short scenes involving Anakin, the book was nearly identical to the movie. If that's what you're looking for, then you'll love the book. Brooks does a decent job of translating the script into a narrative. But if you're looking for background material and insight into the characters' histories and motivations, read Queen Amidala's Journal by Jude Watson.
Rating: Summary: Utter tripe. Review: It's interesting, the movie was utter crap, and yet this book manages to be worse. Never have I had the viscreal repulsion to words printed on paper that this book produced, nor engaged in such constant mental rewriting for mere syntax, to say nothing of suspense, descriptiveness, or elucidation of charater. I'm never amazed by the drooling idiocy to which such marketing driven sh*** can sink, but in this case, I managed, as I rarely do, to be appalled. I regret to announce that the form wouldn't let me give it negative stars. Thank god I didn't pay for it. Please save your money as well.
Rating: Summary: A Great Book! The Best Ever! Review: Hey! I have never read a really good book before. I may be only 13 but I have read alot of books in my life and this was the best.I was never a Star Wars fan. I always looked at it all as a marketing scheme. One day my parents took me to go see it. (I was so angry!) I watched it and loved! My mom then bought me the book. I read so eagerly. I would read 40 pages a day!! I finished the book within a week. MY personal opinion may not matter, but I thought it was a GREAT BOOK!
Rating: Summary: THE "LIGHTSABER" OF SHANARRA??? Review: I am an avid "Star Wars" fan, and I have enjoyed every novel of the universe that I have read...EXCEPT FOR ONE...And that one is "The Phantom Menace". Although Terry Brooks is an excellent creator of fiction, his writing style is dull, bland, and insanely redundant...In my own opinion, I prefer to read the novels over the movies. In the movie, you can't read about the thoughts through the mind of the character's, or learn little details about each person. It is what makes the books interesting...But Mr. Brooks has managed to write the first "Star Wars" novel, that I have not found interesting... Usually, for me, the novel is much better than the movie...In the case of "Episode I", the movie is the better choice...
Rating: Summary: Comedical and Serious all in one! Review: Okay, before I continue, let me say this. I used to hate Star Wars. I used to really hate it. But then the special editions came out, and my dad took me to see them. It was the first time I had even seen anything about it. It was love at first sight. Now I'm obsessed. I'm ordering this book in two days, and I've already read my friends copy twice. I'm saving up to buy the panoramic version of the movie when it comes out (which it will!). I've seen the movie three times, and count on seeing it at least two more. This book was fantastic. It was detailed, and went more into character development. I loved it. It was serious, yet had a funny side to it too. If you haven't read it yet, do so immediatly. READREADREADREADREADREADREADREADREADREADREADREAD (It says read up above, not dread. Just so you know.)
Rating: Summary: The death of literature Review: This audio format is ideal for amazon customers & the lucas cult, who will have difficulty with even brooks prose, although packaged with corporate glitz it is as empty of significance as a booklist review.
Rating: Summary: Vivid descriptions makes you feel like you are there. Review: It was almost exactly like the movie itself, but some of it was even better. I'm a person who doesn't really read a book more than once, but this was good enough to read over and over again. I recommend it to anybody!
Rating: Summary: The movie is way better than the book. Review: I think that Brooks left out a lot of depth. Especially in the final lightsaber battle. I mean, there were lots of parts in the movie that sent shivers down my spine and gave me firm impressions of character. What about when Maul paces back and forth behind the red energy sheilds? Giving that menacing sneer. Nope, sorry, the book just says he's patchin' up his wounds. You see, the movie made me think of Maul as a secretive, mysterious, menacing, dangerous, doesn't-waste-his-time-on-words Sith Lord with a lust for revenge against the Jedi. But the book totally destroys the character of Maul! He barely says a word in the movie, which adds to his character, but then all of a sudden Brooks adds in a scene where Maul starts talking in paragraphs, being a tad of a snotty hotshot, and actually using the exclamation point! What was he thinking? I was so mad! Maul was portrayed flawlessly in the movie; so much better than the book. Truly cloaked in evil. Wish Brooks wouldn't have him smile 5 times, too. Even if it was meant to be menacing. Could have had him sneer. Much better. But that's just an example of the many disappointments in this book. For the most part, it was a good read, but I seriously thought it could have been better done. For once I say: go see the movie, it's better than the book.
Rating: Summary: A great book! Review: This book is well written and entertaining. I recommend that anyone who has seen the movie read this novel, because it gives great insight into the thoughts and personalities of the charcters.
