Rating: Summary: Incredible journey Review: This is a fabulous read!!! It's exciting, intriguing and will keep you turning the pages non-stop, until the end of the book. Mr. Braver forces you to think about the importance parents, as well as society, places on intelligence and status in the community. How far will you go to make your child intellectually superior and at what cost? Is happiness equally important? You'll contemplate these issues as you read, with great suspense, Gray Matter.
Rating: Summary: Page Turner with Moral Meat to It Review: This was a great book. It is a page turner yet it presents a moral dilemma to the reader - What parent doesn't wish for their child to be smart? And in today's age, where a C is no longer average, but means subpar, what parent is satisfied with that? And what parents with Post-Graduate degrees and under their belts don't believe that their child is destined for the same? This book presents that dilemma, but in a page turning thriller. It's really a great, complex, meaty thriller along the lines of Michael Palmer and that genre. It can get creepy too! Enjoy!
Rating: Summary: Quite a ride! Review: While looking for something new to read I literally stumbled across Gray Matter. The jacket caught my interest and I bought it on a whim. I could not be happier with that decision and I cannot wait to read more from Gary Braver! This book grabbed me from the opening paragraph and I devoured it over the next two days. Perhaps it was the subject matter that struck so close to home, but whatever it was, I was immediately hooked. If his other works are nearly as good I'll need another bookshelf in my library. Keep'em coming!
Rating: Summary: Gray Matter - A Braver masterpiece Review: This is an amazing and thought-provoking novel. The prose was beautiful and a joy to read, the story captivating and the characters so clearly depicted. I especially enjoyed Gary's vivid descriptions of the Boston area. The story moved along at a perfect pace and stirred many emotions along the way. The author's exhaustive research and knowledge was very evident in this complex and emotional story. I found the ending to be both shocking and exciting. I have advised many people to read this novel and will continue to. It's just too good to miss.
Rating: Summary: A Great Read! Review: I honestly wish I could give this book a 6! My husband reccommended this book to me (Its usually the other way around)and I highly reccommend it to anyone else who is interested in exploring the ethical parameters of evolving medical technology. A real page turner!
Rating: Summary: A well-crafted, thoughful adventure story Review: This book is as good as any thriller I've read. The characters are well-drawn, their concerns and decisions credible and their relationships complex. The book also offers something missing in most works of fiction: It actually gave me something to think about-- the constant search for advantage in our competitive society, and how far people are willing to go to achieve it. I'm looking forward to reading more Gary Braver books. (And, by the way, this one would make a great movie)
Rating: Summary: Braver New World Review: A smart and entertaining novel in which the author examines the ethical and neurological slip stream created by our constant belief that technology can & will provide solutions for just about any inconvenience or inequality which befall us. the author reprises the axiom that ther'e just ain't any free lunches to be had in this or any town. An enjoyable read from a constantly evolving author with something to say worth listening to.
Rating: Summary: Gripping Review: I throughly enjoyed this gripping novel of genetic alteration. This will make a fantastic film!!
Rating: Summary: Brains = Happiness = Success? Review: You're a father; you're a mother. You've got status, money, you're successful, and, it goes without saying, smart. Your six-year-old child should be brilliant like you, but he just squeaks into the very low average range (yes, Mom has a nasty genetic skeleton in her closet - ah, that 60s hedonism takes a big belated toll). The kid's affectionate and sings like a star, but it looks like he's doomed to polish shoes or pull dandelions from some rich guy's garden. Someone offers you a chance to make your son a genius. It costs big bucks, but it seems to work on other kids. You'd jump at the chance. Or would you? Gary Braver's Gray Matter explores the question of intelligence enhancement. In our world of clones and genetic manipulation, Braver raises pertinent and scary options, which today are mere science fiction but, who knows - the world is changing so quickly. More importantly, he does so through a great story. Any novel of ideas has to have the architecture that makes the reader want to know "what happens next"? Braver is a master storyteller, and a big thinker. He's been compared to Robin Cook, but Braver is a much better writer. He's out there pushing the envelope. And he has a thing for Ganesha, the elephant-headed Hindu god who sits on my desk as I write this. Ganesha protects and inspires writers, and he's done a fine job helping Braver so far.
Rating: Summary: A Engaging Read Review: Being a neurosurgeon I am not one to read medical thrillers, but Gray Matter was given to me by a friend after a high endorsement. Somewhat skeptically I began the prolog. Not only was I struck by Braver's excellent craft, but I was hooked by the end of the first five pages. The thing I dislike about many of this genre is they seem contrived. Not so with Gray Matter. This was a fast, engrossing read that held my interest from beginning to end. The characters were believable, the plot plausible, and the ethical issues timely. Still not a fan of this genre, I am now a fan of Braver. I recommend this for anyone regardless of their preferences in fiction.
