Rating: Summary: Incredibly creative - among the best fantasy written Review: I read the trilogy years ago and unfortunately loaned it to someone who never returned it, so I am desperate to get book 2 (I have since found books 1 and 3). Harrison has created a series that, like Gulliver's Travels and the Tolkien Trilogy, can be read and appreciated on several levels. That it is out of print is unbelievable. It should be required reading for all budding authors.
Rating: Summary: Most underrated writer pens most underrated trilogy Review: Imagaine a writer with the prose skill of Leon Uris, the imagination of H.G. Wells, and the and the ability to develop characters on par with J.R. Tolkien. Yes, you've guessed it! Harry Harrison. Don't believe me? Try West of Eden and see if you don't come away as awed as I was. I know that some are turned off by alternate history stories, but I believe fantasy and S.F. fans alike will adore this brilliant story about early man vs intelligent lizards for domonition of the earth.
Rating: Summary: Slave-boy makes good Review: In a tried-and-true Harrison formula, the book's protagonist goes from slave-status to conquering hero in the course of the narrative, set in a world where the dinosaurs didn't go extinct, but mankind somehow managed to evolve despite this. This is a rather tenuous premise to begin with to anyone familiar with evolutionary biology, and it's not the only place Harrison's science is wrong--but this is generally forgivable in light of the fact that the book is still pretty engrossing. It's nice to see a fantasy/sci-fi novel that manages to tell a story without indulging overly much in needless descriptions of sex and violence--despite the fact that these things do occur. Suitable for most ages and most temperaments--but it is a bit long for an average paperback. New edition is out this year, with MUCH better cover-art than the original--can the interior sketches be better as well? Probably worth a look.
Rating: Summary: Excellent but where is it? Review: It too amazes me that the West of Eden series is out of print. I read it years ago and it has always been one of my favorites (unfortunately I didn't keep them). I will try to remember the parts that I like. Hmm... Oh yeah I really liked the social structure and biology of the lizard race. What else... Oh yeah I remember a scene in which some top lizard noticed that the human pet he had could get away with telling a lie, ( any lizard who lied would turn color or something)...See I am forgetting an amazing series and I am dying to read them again. SO PRINT THEM AGAIN!!!
Rating: Summary: Out-of-print!!! Review: One of the best alternative histories that I have ever read. The world of dinosaurs co-evolving with humans is fascinating. A shame it's out-of-print. I'm glad I hold on to my old paperbacks. It's amazing what classics can be hard to find.
Rating: Summary: Perfect in almost every way Review: The idea is an old one - what if the asteroid had not hit and dinosaurs had remained the dominant animal force on the planet? This story presumes that mammals would have developed into present day humans (a very iffy assumption) but forget that - the story, the language, the writing, the way in which "human" things were resolved by dinosaurs is handled like a master. The dinosaur society is one of the most interesting I have ever read and the pitiful humans are truly heroic against such odds. A great book and a great read.

Rating: Summary: Why isn't this series recognized as the classic it is! Review: The three books that comprise the West of Eden series are among the best sci-fiction/fantasy ever written. Will I anger other science fiction readers if I say I enjoyed it as much as the original Foundation Trilogy? It isn't quite equal to the pleasure I got from my first read of the Hobbit books, but it is certainly not far. Yet, these are out of print! Amazing. Read, read, read these books, if you can find them...they are truly great. They lift a journeyman writer to the level of artist.
Just give it a try!
Rating: Summary: A Brilliant Epic of an Alternate World! Review: The West of Eden trilogy is one of my all time favorites. It's a great disappointment such a series like this goes out of print. If you haven't read it, then I encourage you to find it and hoard them! Harry Harrison is truly a great storyteller. --James Richey (co-author of Quest for the Fallen Star, TOR 1998)
Rating: Summary: one of the most creative books I've read in a long time. Review: This book is one of the most creative and imaginative books I've read in a long time. The world of the Yilane is so well-constructed it feels real and convincing. The living cities of the Yilane are astoundingly described and constructed. The Yilane language itself is an act of considerable imagination. Harrison's prose style is not especially good and his characters, especially his human characters, seem a little flat, but his world makes up for it.
