Rating: Summary: Justice for Original Star Trek Fans Review: After the movie Star Trek: Generations, I was shocked that they would actually kill Kirk, and not even in the way he knew he was going to die (alone). I felt that was just a way for The Next Generation to get rid of any loyalty to the Original Series so that they could now have all the fun. Well, this book is for all those who did not want Kirk to die. He is resurrected, but the story is much more than that. It is a great adventure involving the Borg and the Romuluns, and it also makes good use of some of the characters of The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine. For me, though, it was simply great just to see Capt. Kirk in action again. He did not deserve the death he got in Generations. Kirk was (and is) a hero of epic porportions. Legends should not die, they should continue boldly on. Let Kirk have a few more adventures. We want them, and he deserves them.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Effort Review: Very well written. Fits nicely into the Star Trek world. A little on the self-glorification side, but a very good book overall.
Rating: Summary: Great, fantastic, incredible!!!!!!!! Review: At first I was a bit sceptic. Kirk should be dead. Why did Shatner revive him? Well, I have to say, I was suprised. Kirk is as he always was. Charming, charismatic, boldy going where no man has gone before. The way the characters are described is great. The story is great. The technical aspects are great. The entire book is absolutely fabulous. Even non-Kirk fans will love it, especially if you like the borg.
Rating: Summary: The story that should have been the next Star Trek Movie Review: There is little doubt in my mind that Paramount should have taken Shatner's advice and made this incredible novel the next Star Trek movie. I've never been held captive by a Trek novel as I was with 'The Return'. I am eagerly awaiting the release of Avenger (in paperback form) so I can continue the exciting adventure that only Captain Kirk could relay and experience. Well done, Mr. Shatner...well done!
Rating: Summary: Shatner proves his worth. Review: Yes, Mr Shatner, a terrific piece of writing, well deserving the high ratings this Amazon reveiw feature has given the book. Ignore all those who gave you less than 6, they don't know what they're talking about! Looking forward to more of your books which really seem to bridge the gap between the generations. The magic never went away from Star Trek, it just slept for a while. Brilliant.
Rating: Summary: An excellent Star Trek novel from Captain Kirk himself Review: Star Trek: The Return was a great book. It combined action, mystery, suspense, humor and even a little bit of good ol' Star Trek technical jargon the major trekkies can't get enough of. I will admit that though I am a fan of Star Trek TOS, I was pretty apprehensive about this book. When I first read the summary I thought, "Bringing Captain Kirk back, eh? Must be pretty desperate." After a few weeks, my curiosity got the best of me and I picked up The Return. I must say I was pleasantly surprised from page one. I couldn't hardly put the book down! It's the type of novel that grabs your interest right away and doesn't let go until the book is over. And when you finally do finish, it's like coming off of a roller coaster. I've also got to say, though, that there were a few stretches in there, but all in all, I thought it was quite a book. Mr. Shatner has truly matured into an excellent writer.
Rating: Summary: An almost excellent Novel Review: An almost excellent sequel to Ashes of Eden! A fine book, that really out does Ashes of Eden. I loved the way it involved elements and personnel from the original series; The Next Generation, and Deep Space Nine. It would have definitely made a better Borg movie than 'First Contact' (Which incidentally I hated. All because of a badly mis-cast James Cromwell. Pardon me but wasn't Zefram Cochrane supposed to be in his early thirties when he pioneered the warp drive. Surely there must've be a Glenn Corbett look-alike somewhere in Hollywood - that's the gentleman who portrayed him in the classic episode Metamorphosis and who has since died. This singular lack of continuity ruined an otherwise fine movie for me.) The surprise origin of the Borg, Doctors Leonard H McCoy and Julian Bashir's surprise appearances. Kirk's encounters with Worf. Riker, Geordie, Data, Picard, Spock captaining in a space battle and Kirk's death, like it should be; a blaze of glory! Or at least it appeared to be. Kirk of course miraculously returned in 'Avenger'. Of course, you can't keep a good hero or legend down. Whilst Kirk's defeat of Worf in fair fight and out-smarting Data does stretch belief. I surmise that as a by product of the nano-technolgy that revived him and that was slowly ironically killing him; it also enhanced his physical and mental capabilities to maximum efficiency even though effectively brainwashing him. Well, it's as good as explanation as any. All in all the best Star Trek novel I've ever read so far.
Rating: Summary: Where did Shatner get the idea that he could write? Review: I hate having to say it that directly, but it's true. THe writing style on this is really terrible. It concentrates on the idea that only one person can save the universe when it could be the exact opposite of that very easily. The plot is slow, the characters unbelievable, and the book (dare I say) terrible.
Rating: Summary: "Sir, he's dead already!" -Scotty in STII:the Wrath of Khan Review: Great post generations story, certainly better that the previous Shatner book, Ashes of Eden. I like the story in how it involves the Next Generation crew but how much more mileage can put on Kirk. He died in Generations, rest in peace.
Rating: Summary: An excellent book! Review: The best Star Trek book I've ever read! It has a good mixture of action, humor, and sad parts. Kirk is "programmed" by the borg and the Romulans to kill Picard. It is definitely "on-the-edge of your seat" book. After reading it, I expected it to be the next Star Trek movie. The way the story went, it flowed like a sequel to Generations. It would have made a better movie than First Contact. (FC is still a good movie.) I highly recommed this book to any trekker. You'll love it!
