Rating: Summary: Enthralling dark fantasy! Review: First a warning--this book has graphic violence, a complex plot, and a confusing tendency to use names like Saetan, Daemon, Hell, and Lucivar which have absolutely no connection to what the names mean in the normal context. This was really offputting for me and I kept debating on buying this book for quite a while, but I am glad I finally did! And now on to the plot! The Blood of Terrielle were once the guardians of the land. The Warlord Princes and the lesser blood protected their Witch, and in turn the witch cherished them and the land. But after hundreds of years of treachery and deception by one powerful and ambitious witch, Dorotea, hatred and distrust now rule the land where she is the ultimate and unchallenged ruler. Under this warped, evil woman, males, through rape and cruelty, now break witches before they come into their power, and those witches who escape this fate enslave and torment the males out of vengeance in an endless circle of distrust and fear.Into this land of horror is born Jaenelle Angelline, a loving and innocent girl, destined to be the most powerful Witch ever and savior of the land. She can pass at will from land to land, even into the land of the undead. She is befriended and taught by the High Lord of Hell, sworn enemy of Dorotea, and she sees wonders like unicorns and telepathic beasts. And she learns not to tell a soul about her strange experiences, for her own family comes to believe her to be mad and they repeatedly lock her away in Briarwood for treatments. Briarwood, where young, helpless, highstrung witches are sent for treatments, and come out mindless and passive, if they come out at all... But Jaenelle is not without defenders for in her travels she has met winged Lucivar, an enslaved Eyrian Warlord Prince, and Daemon, a handsome warlord prince sent to Jaenelle's home to act as a household bedslave by Dorotea. Both recognize in her the potential to be Witch and will do anything, even endanger their own lives and sanity to save her from the unspeakable evil she has faced alone for so long.
Rating: Summary: Draws you in and keeps you there. Review: This book is mesmerizing and deeply seductive from the first page to the last. You will wind up reading the entire trilogy over the course of a few days not a few weeks. Enjoy it.
Rating: Summary: Simply a must... Review: Over the years I have read many novels of almost every genre. So good, some bad. All I can say is that the Black Jewels Trilogy is by far one of the best series of books I have ever read. I first started the series last year when my friend presented me with all three books to borrow, telling me I had to read it. I told her that I wouldn't be able to read them until spring break, then a month away, because of my hectic schedule. One night I wanted to read something before bed and this book was sitting next to my bed. So I said why not? next thing I knew I had read the entire series in three days, and these were days I worked and went to school. I could literaly not put them down. They were that good. When I brought my friend back her books she gave me a look and asked me why I wasn't going to read the novels. I simply replied I already had. She then gave me a smile of understanding, the same thing had happened to her. Since then we have forced all of our friends to read the books and everyone of them has loved it. All I can say about the series is that it is simply a must. So what are you waiting for? go out and read it!
Rating: Summary: Great Read Review: I just love anne bishop's black jewels trilogy. The charcters in this series all are so great. This first one is about cat when she is a little girl. This is a series that everyone should read.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely wonderful! Review: I bought this book on a whim, thinking that it wouldn't be that great. I don't think I've ever been more wrong about a book before. Anne Bishop has taken the fantasy genre and made it into her own unique design. I mean, how many other books have you read where Saetan is the GOOD guy? This is a great book and I can't wait to read the rest of the trilogy.
Rating: Summary: What a way to start! Review: I happened upon this trilogy while looking for something "different" to read. I am a sci-fi fan, but was not much into fantasy. This author has changed my mind. Once I read the first book, I went out and bought the others, finishing them within a week, and then reading them again. Fantasy has a way of making you focus more on the details, and because of her style and way with details, you see more in her books, you feel what the characters and the Kindred are feeling. Her ways of twisting the stereotypes, by making the heroes reside in Hell, and making black magic good, having the women be the rulers, is completely different from anything I have ever read before. She is a truly compelling author, and I will be eternally grateful to her for opening my eyes to other ideas and authors I may have well passed by. Fantastic!
Rating: Summary: Daughter of the Blood Review: Never in my life have I enjoyed reading a book (trilogy) so much. I couldn't wait to finish them, but didn't want the story to end. These books have just about ruined me for reading anything else. Nothing compares. I have never be swept away to another time or place before. The detail of this story we entrance you. Do yourself a big, big favor...buy all three at the same time or you will not forgive yourself. These book are enticing and addictive. You will not regret purchasing these books, nor will you want to let them go!!!!
Rating: Summary: So good, I re-read it immediately! Review: This book, and the rest of the series is fantastic. I couldn't go to sleep until I finished it, and wound up on the computer at 2 a.m. to order the next two books. The world and its characters that Ms. Bishop created are thrilling. Hopefully, there will be more books coming soon.
Rating: Summary: Enthralling and Passionate Review: I believe I found this book by pure chance on the net at a review site. I was running low on new books and decided to give it a go.It was worth it. This is an amazing book which creates a detailed and gorgeous world, both beautiful and ugly, loving and despairing. Bishop has flipped traditional fantasy around to create a world where the traditional bad guys are good (Namely Saetan High Lord of Hell, and his bastard sons Daemon Sadi and Lucivar Yaslana), dark is better and society has been transformed into a degrading sexual peversion. The main characters are enthralling and quickly grab the reader's interest. I especially like Daemon, Lucivar(much more in the 2nd novel) and Surreal. Oh yeah and Saetan, that guy just rocks! I can only give this book praise, sure there are some weak spots, these guys have lived for so long and yet they react like rookies at times, however it is small compared to the rest of the novel. Go and buy it, you will not be disappointed!!
Rating: Summary: Superheroic Sadists ... Review: All Sadi-Fans may cry out loud now and fall over their killing edge. But first, something positive: Invisible Ring (The 'Episode One' of this series) was a quite decent book - but with a load of UGLY flaws. These flaws are all there in the Black Jewels series (no, I didn't read all of it, but skipped through enough ...)- just multiplied several times. Let's say that there are three main problems: a)Sadi b)Fluffiness c)Almightiness Let's begin with c): Almightiness is not exactly a rare problem in fantasy heroes - but it seldom reaches THIS extent. The key problem is of course the all-so-innovative magic system. Class A juweled mages are slaughtered by class B in the dozens, class B is massacred by a class C in the houndreds, class D takes on thousands of opponents and so on. This goes up to Mrs. Superwitch Jaenelle killing off roughly two thirds of the world's population along with all baddies (an action of questionable ethical value, besides). This is not a joke. I wish it was. Battles are exceedingly boring, as the reader should learn quickly, that the number of opponents is absolutely unimportant. At best, the only problem for the heroes is to dig deep in their inner well off power - and once they did it right, the enemy army (understandably, it takes an army every time, mere guards are nothing) goes plopp plopp plopp (no survivors, of course). Thrilling. Especially deadly to the story is the fact that even the associates of the heroes seem to be way way stronger then the big evil arch-enemy Hekatah and her cohorts. But she rules the world, you say? Holds Daemon and his brother enslaved with strong magic and ruthless intrigues? Big deal. Daemon's a slave? HA! He routinely slaughters entire courts and thwarts all evil schemes within an eyeblink. So where's the problem? Basically, there is none. It is always stated that the heroes are in terrible danger, but the thrill rather goes out off it, once you realize that it would take the good guys just a wink of their little finger to solve everything. Oh ... of course they have problems among themselves. That's point b)'fluffiness'. Even if the good guy is the high lord of hell(how innovative) and rules the realms of the dead, he still has trouble organising children's birthday parties and snapping around because someone played pranks on him. Funny? Rather ridiculous, if you care to ask me. Point c)is of course best demonstrated on the example of Mr. Sadi himself. He's not just called 'The Sadist', he is one. WOW! WHAT A CHARACTER! THAT'S BRILLIANT! No. Rather disgusting. This slimy piece of junk (why he's supposed to be so overwhelmingly attractive to women escapes me)is used to do whatever he pleases and revenges every little insult without mercy. Granted, he kills off and tortures only bad guys (and girls), but frankly speaking, all of them are way more sympathic than he is. This slimeball ruins every side on which he appears beyond help. I'm giving the book and the series one star because: 1. it's remarkably bad and 2. I didn't read it all. Don't ask me why half the world seems to love it, maybe it's Sadi's 'charme'...
