Summary: A sizzling, sexy, mile-a-minute screamride.
Review: This is an utterly new and engaging world filled with dream creatures presented to us through Bishop's precise prose style. These characters grabbed me by the heart and would not let go even after I'd turned the last, gut-wrenching page. This should be a brilliant trilogy.

Summary: The Passion and Crisis of this book will rip you apart.
Review: For a book without physical description, I know this world and these people better then some of my own. The passion will rope you in and make you feel with an intensity that will raise the hair on the back of your head. I can't wait for the next in the trilogy.

Summary: A wonderfully woven novel
Review: Truly a book I could not put down. Ann Bishop has made a spectacular entry into the world of fantasy.

For all who loved "Shanara", the Black Jewels Trilogy, is a must read.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Wonderful new trilogy from a first time author
Review: It was only after I read this book that I noticed that this was a new author! Anne Bishop does a wonderful job of creating a mysterious young girl who will change the lives of those around her. The girl offers hope and light to many of the downtrodden in what is a cruel, controlling society. Her coming was foretold centuries ago, but much has happened in the meantime to those who anxiously await her coming. She fulfills all those long-awaited hopes, and more. Yet the girl has problems that may yet overcome her. I enjoyed the book thoroughly, and most anxiously await the next book in the trilogy.

Summary: Wish I could give this book and series more stars!!!
Review: This book was fabulous. My co-worker lent me the series and the pre-quel and i read all four books in four days!!!

I cannot even begin to say how amazed I was of the characters in these books!! All of the characters were compelling to the very end and the plot and storylines all blended well together.

I would have to say my favorite character of course was Daemon. He sounds so sexy!!! But I guess I like my men a little on the cynical, broody side.

I hope Mrs. Bishop adds some more titles to this series and I want more!! more!! more!!!

Summary: read all
Review: I've read all of her books and I love all of them. Her worlds are so intriquite it's hard not to fall in love with them. I can only hope she will write more. I especially hope she creates a new series along the same lines as this book.

Summary: Forced darkness obscures innovation
Review: I found the sadism forced and excessive. I got the impression the author had disgusting things happen to characters just to push the envelope of what's acceptable in fantasy. At one point I actually found myself laughing out loud because some horrible secret ended up being so unbelievably stupid. Naming the good guys Saetan and Daemon seemed an immature attempt to explore how we define good & evil. That said... there IS something compelling about the characters, and the magical framework is really innovative and interesting. I would have enjoyed this book much more if torture occurred to advance plot and not for its own sake. I will be skipping the sequels.

Summary: warning - not for the easily offended or the weak hearted
Review: I was forced to read this by my cousin, under threat of her never lending me another book again (a fate worse than death). At first I hated it more than dancing because it didn't explain the magic very well and it was . . . well . . . depressing/boring/disgusting.
But halfway through, everything changed. I will give nothing else away but I must tell you three things - don't give up on it halfway through, it's all worth it once you get to the good parts.
Suggestion #2 - don't even bother trying to understand the magic. You'll just confuse yourself, and if it doesn't confuse you . . . well, I stick out my virtual online tongue at you for your superior inttelligence.
Suggestion #3 - you MIGHT want to be older than 15 before you read this book. As they say in the movies, "It contains mature subject matter."

Summary: Better than I expected
Review: When I first started reading this book, I, like a few of the other readers had expressed, took a small exception with the names. After all, I had just read Steven Brust's "To Reign in Hell," so the different names for characters that were based on the different names for the Devil/Satan/Lucifer/whatever-name-you-use left me a little suspicious. I almost didn't want to like this book. Boy, was I disappointed. I found it absorbing.

As far as being gory, as some people have complained, it's not REALLY that gory. There is torture (the whole idea is that the Queens are arbitrary, capricious, ruthless, and evil), but nothing that's really beyond the realm of any other run-of-the-mill fantasy author who writes about cruel characters (like the death wheels of Guy Gavriel Kay or the heads on spikes that are so frequent in fantasy novels). The goriest killing in the novel isn't even described in detail to the reader; it's left as an idea, something so grotesque that it leaves some of the characters with absolute dread, especially the ones who witnessed it, but it's never described to the reader in any substantial detail. So, I don't know what those other people are complaining about.

But anyway... There are a few imperfections in the book. For example, Bishop doesn't really explain HOW the jewels work...you just have to take for granted that they do and that life force is channelled through them. The other thing I thought was that the events leading up to the climax weren't really focused (the story is told from the perspectives of several different characters), but the climax of the book was so truly enjoyable that the lack of focus was easily forgivable. For me, the imperfections in no way made me enjoy the story less. I highly recommend this book.
