Rating: Summary: Read and learn... I didn't know it could be this fun. Review: Of course I knew Forstchen's writing style would reflect him. He taught my freshman and sophomore history classes in high-school, and he was brilliantly twisted then. The entire Rally Cry series is dangerous; don't start it unless you are on vacation. Yeah, yeah... characters are great, plot is great, writing is wonderful. Let's give credit where it's due though. The best combat scenes and descriptions of atrocities ever. No blood spilling goes un-sung! Keep 'em coming Bill... we're waiting. Oh if you never read his first trillogy, do yourself a favor: Ice Prophet. Read it.
Rating: Summary: The best sci-fi/fantasy fiction I have ever read! Review: A book and series that has dethroned Tolkien, Morcock and Turtledove in my opinion as the best fantasy/alternative universe writing that I have ever encountered. My biggest compliments for Forstchen's writing is his detail. I love the fact that he goes into the minute details that are requried to wage the campaign in the book, and he flat out writes the best combat sequences that I have ever read. There is nothing that I hate more than battle sequences that start and finish in two sentences. Not here, Forstchen takes you vivdly throughh the battles and they are great! Once you read this book you'll be caught for the whole series. This is te only Sci-fi that I've ever given away as a gift to friends. BILL - Keep em coming!
Rating: Summary: One of the best sci-fi reads in a long time. Review: A wonderful book. Ingenious plot line. Forschten is master of the written word. The characters are extremely well developed, especially the Colonel. Basic premise: A bunch Civil War New Englanders are stranded on a strange world where humans are but sacrifices to strange aliens. Almost no criticisms for this one, except for the rather dramatic last minute ending. Perhaps Forschten could have come up with a more realistic ending.
Rating: Summary: Very, Very Good ! Review: This is a wellwritten book, where the Hero's dont automaticly win because they're Heros. They get as rough a treatment as all the rest. I like that a lot and I look forward to read the next in the serie :)
Rating: Summary: and in the "guilty pleasures" category... Review: Picked it up and bought it on a whim. Damn thing keep me up past my bedtime for three nights.A great story and a wonderful waste of time. Now how do I avoid the rest of the series?
Rating: Summary: Fantastic Book Fantastic Series Review: WARNING: This book and the others in the series will so wrap you in character, plot, suspense and action - you will NEVER want to put it down. This is not just great historical science fiction (ah a new genre) it is an example of what makes great writing. Every friend to whom I have lent this book becomes a series addict. The other fantastic thing about this series is that each book stands on its own as a great story. BUY THIS BOOK!!!
Rating: Summary: A series so great I fear where my time will go! Review: I picked up this book on a whim, letting it sit in my 'to be read' pile for months before picking it up again. Then I knew what a mistake I had made, I couldn't put the book back down and my time started dissapearing. With each new book I've hesitated to continue reading the series, not for fear of the quality, but for the fear my time will dissapear as once again I'm drawn into the world of the 35th Maine.
Rating: Summary: This book is for Civil War fans, or fantasy fans. Review: Whether you thirst for fiction revolving around the courage and gritty fighting of the Civil War days, or want to whet your fantasy whistle, this book about overwhelming odds, on an unfamiliar world will fit the bill. You will be rooting the whole way for a group of Yankees, who are brought to a world filled with unimaginable horrors. You will be inspired by the courage, the thought of freedom elicits in the local down-trodden populace. This is the book and series that got me hooked on both the Civil War and fantasy type fiction. It is by far one of my favorite stories.
Rating: Summary: A requiem of a people's struggle for liberty and life. Review: A vast spectacle on a distant planet burning with a nightmarish war and the deadly intrigue beetween hated rivals fires this breathtaking account of Colonel Andrew Keane's Union regiment as they are transported unexplicably to a world where they must contemplate battle with the Merki, a terrible race that has enslaved humanity. The story seamlessy chronicles the regiment's efforts to coexist with the human population while the account of the peasant's rebellion against their human feudal masters and the war that follows is expressed in an exciting staccato fashion. Especially enjoyable is the detail in which the regiment's efforts to transform the medieval civilization of humans into an industrial society is written and the depiction of the Merki as not just bloodthirsty man-eaters but as a people trapped in a cituation as desperate as that of the humans. The characters are a wonderfully written cast that range from the heroic Andrew Keane, to the malevolent Rasnar, and Qubata, the leader of the Merki horde forced to fight a war that he knows can only end in the destruction of his people. Engrossing and passionate, William Forstchen has created a perfect initiation for any novice to the genre of sci-fi/fantasy and a near flawless genesis to a his "Lost Regiment" series.
