Summary: part of my "stranded on a desert island" kit
Review: My absolutely favorite fiction work ever -- I reread it (at least) annually. Compelling, absorbing, amazing. If you need to, read the rest of the reviews here. Otherwise, hurry up and get it -- in fact, get multiple copies -- you'll pass this to friends and your copy will inevitably wander away.

Summary: It's not a bookstore if it doesn't have
THE EIGHT
Review: This is far and away my favorite book. I read it at least every 6 months and use it as a guide to whether a bookstore is worth my browsing time. I walk in and go straight to Fiction/Neville. If it's not there, I leave. If they do have it and I'm with someone, I buy it for her.

THE EIGHT has it all - mystery, philosophy, action, brain teasers, romance, history and excellent bad guys. It's inspirational as to using your noodle, taking chances and living life to the fullest. Buy it and read it TODAY

Summary: IF YOU READ ONLY ONE BOOK PER YEAR - READ THIS!
Review: Without a doubt, the finest fictional work I have ever read. A book that should NEVER be made into a move - no director could do it justice (and it would have to be about 8 hours long to capture the full tale.) For her first novel, Ms. Neville has done her homework. The twists and tales are incredible. I never guessed the ending and after reading the book I couldn't pick up another one for at least 3 weeks after. The best page-turner - I was marking pages to refer back constantly. I have recommended this book to everone I talk to about books. I will be keeping this book in my house so that my offspring will be able to enjoy this tale for generations

Summary: I stopped counting the times I've read this book at, yes, 8
Review: All the other reviews describe the book well. But no one mentioned the biographical sketches of such historical figures as Catherine the Great, Napoleon, Bach, Marat, Rousseau, Talleyrand, Benedict Arnold, etc. that are an integral part of the novel. Of course the stories of these persons are fictionalized in the book, but the ability of Ms. Neville to weave such realistic portraits of legends into the epic story she tells is fascinating and adds greatly to the appeal of this book. Also, let's not forget the education she gives us in chess, math, computers, the French revolution, alchemy, Mediterranean mythology, Algiers, OPEC, puzzles, Fibonacci numbers and freemasonry. Oh, and before anyone thinks that a book that covers the above topics must be pedantic, boring and complicated, let me state emphatically that this book is FUN. It's a hoot. It's engaging. It's engrossing. Finally, my copy of this book is starting to fall apart from overuse. It's time to get a new copy. And Ms. Neville, if you're reading this, please write another book. I can't wait.

Summary: A Total Multi-Generational Delight!
Review: Let me join my voice to the chorus singing the praises of this book! It is absolutely one of my all-time top ten favorites! Interestingly enough, my teenaged daughter was listening when my "reading buddy" recommended it to me. She also decided it sounded interesting. Right after I finished it, she also read it and was equally enchanted. This may not seem like such a big deal to you, but she almost never reads anything I recommend. (She refuses to read 'Jane Eyre'??!! She chooses 'Trainspotting' instead??!!) Trust me, being pooh-poohed by your daughter is painful...So thanks, Ms. Neville, for treating us to women characters who are both clever and entertaining. We're both looking forward to more

Summary: The best book I have EVER read - and I've read a lot.
Review: Neville's heroine is extremely smart, funny, and self-deprecating. Full of suspense, mystery, humor, mathematics (yuck), and chess, you will never lose interest - whether you know anything about those subjects or not. It's completely engrossing, so prepare to give up some other hobby (like sleeping) once you've picked it up

Summary: entertaining
Review: Despite covering such a large time span the book was able to keep up the pace from cover to cover. A lovely blend of actual information from the revolution with the story at hand. In short, a good read for fans of many genres

Summary: THIS ONE GOES TO MY PRIVATE LIBRARY
Review: First let me recommend you read Katherine Neville's other book "Calculated Risk" (another 10). Having read the 2nd finest book you'll ever read, you will not be disappointed since "The Eight" WILL be THE best. This seems to hold true for myself and the several people I have shared them with. One person even bought a canvase cover for my copy of "8" to protect such a valuable (paperback) book! The intrigue, color, history and down right plausable excitement make "The Eight" the best book I have ever read. I anxiously await her next book. F.

Summary: Great suspense with something for everyone!
Review: If you're looking for a great read, try The Eight. Its got mystery, suspense, brain teasers, and a bit of romance. Evil villians lurk around every corner and mysterious subplots all come together in the end. Exotic locales and magnificant caracters abound

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: A challenging chess match in real life, over 200+ years
Review: One does not care to play chess on the edge of a precipice, but sometimes, characters are drawn into games nto of their own choosing. This wonderful adventure book is filled with romance, strong, well drawn characters, and enough historical figures to field an entire chess board.
