Summary: Great Story-Disappointing Ending
Review: The Eight is a truly exciting and amazing story. The eighteenth century portions are enthralling. There are stories within stories within stories.

As for the twentieth century plotline, it's helpful to remember when one is reading the book today, that it is set in the '70's--a full generation ago. Women doing the kind of work the heroine does were rarer then than they are now.

However, I was very disappointed in the solution to the mystery. As I read the last few pages of the book, I thought, is that all there is?

I found The Magic Circle's ending more satisfying, and The Calculated Risk remains my favorite Neville book.

Summary: Fabulous story-telling!
Review: This book was recommended by a good friend, and what a recommendation! I read this along with 'The magic circle' and was so impressed. I couldn't put either books down and read them both before the weekend was up. I've even bought them as gifts for others. I do give this a very honorable 5 star rating. Neville truely has a gift of writing and knows how to keep her readers captivated!

Summary: Where Was The Editor
Review: The book could have done with better editing, in fact, the editor must have been out to lunch. As it is, it's tedious and often akwardly written. The frequently elaborate descriptions of personae, places, furniture, what have you, remind one of a romance novel rather than a thriller.

As a thriller, is doesn't move well either.

Also, the reader is left to guess which of the stories are historically accurate. An afterword explaining research and what's historical and what are the author's license and invention, as well a bibliography, is missing, inexcusable in my opinion in an ambitious book such as this one.

Summary: This book is amazing
Review: If you're willing to think while reading a book, if you want to be totally absorbed in the story, and you're not just looking for a bare chest man sweeping a woman named Yasmine off her feet - THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU. Great story, strong attention to detail, and completely absorbing. Great for history buffs, mystery lovers, and yes... there is a little romance too.

Summary: This book is impossible to put down !
Review: I began this book by borrowing it from a friend during a day at the beach...she didn't mind if I read the first few chapters but did want it back. I simply couldn't put it down and she had a hard time wrestling it away from me ! :-) In all seriousness, this is intellectual treat, a thriller, and truly a page turner. But, make sure you have a friend who has also read it---you're going to want to talk about it with someone when you're finished !

Summary: Could I recommend this book more?
Review: I enjoy reading all genres of books, from sci-fi to military adventure, historical romances to classical literature. And I tell you, this is the book I would want to have with me if I was stranded on a deserted island. This IS my favorite book of all time. For someone who is not a big historical buff, the historical timeline is so engaging and so intricately woven with the present timeline that a wonderful tapestry unfolds. For a book with such an excellent plot, it is not entirely plot-driven but has carefully developed characters that actually create the story around them. A tale of history, intrigue, politics, love, risk, adventure, power, family - it has everything bound in one incredible story. If I was allowed to recommend only one book - this would be it. What more can I say? :)

Summary: So good, I'm speechless and can't think of a clever line!
Review: Stumbling on this book was the best thing to happen to me in a while! I never thought I would be glad for a long plane flight and who cares if we ever got to the gate... I devoured this on a recent business trip. The tale was well told and totally engrossing. I usually find the "parallel stories" approach cumbersome, but the alternating tales from current day and 200 years prior was handled masterfully. Kind of makes me proud to have been in the high school chess club! Stop reading this review and read "The Eight" now! Thank you, Ms. Neville!!

Summary: What am I missing?
Review: I'm halfway through and can't understand the rave review of the person who loaned the book to me. She loved it and I have a great deal of respect for her. But the book strikes me as being completely facile. Who would believe that this 20-something of the 20th century can be such a naive idiot, and the only female in a top accounting firm? And back to the 18th century, did Neville pick the top 10 names of the period and just casually drop them into the plot? The characters are silly and unbelievable in both time frames. What am I missing?

Summary: A wonderful book!
Review: Words are inadequate to describe the satisfaction one feels after having read a truly thoroughly enjoyable and engrossing book. THE EIGHT is that kind of book. Interesting, thought-provoking, mysterious, intellectual, romantic, and a good adventure! Really, what more could a reader ask for?
