Rating: Summary: The Gate to Women's Country Review: This story does not "bash" men, as some reviewers have suggested; it reveres gentle men. The males have a choice between maintaining the status quo of untold centuries, (which hasn't worked to the benefit of society), or crossing through the gate to an entirely different and, for them, unknown reality. The women, too, are torn by indecision, and the women who are charged with making the hardest decisions, (for others as well as themselves), recognize their responsibility, and proceed with courage no matter the difficulties. I have given this book to all five of my (very strong) daughters and have recommended it to many others, male as well as female. It is always well-regarded, and I have re-read it a dozen times,... always finding something new. The several surprises in the story continue to be a delight, even though they are now familiar to this reader. Everything Sheri Tepper writes is engaging but The Gate to Women's Country is her best work.
Rating: Summary: Very thought-provoking Review: Just finished reading this as an assignment for USF here at Tampa. Invaluable, if only for the fact that it will get MEN to THINK (some men, anyways)... All the lies, hypocrisy and falsehoods that the Women's Council have to expound to the citizens, to prop-up and hold up the front of this "better civilization", for the sake of a "better world!" And WHAT ELSE is new? That's the way the world works today! Lies, hypocrisy and the practice of falsehood is standard practice in the world's politics today! Only difference is, the people of Women's Country may actually have far nobler ideals than today's (mostly male) politicians, whose motto seems to be: Just make the businessmen and the fat cats perfectly happy, give them everything they want, and everything will be okay in society! (NOT! .....) The women's "recipe" for a better world is, of course, debatable. But then, that's the purpose of this book, to make you THINK and Debate, isn't it? And tragically enough, Tepper has not exaggerated one bit in describing the ignorant and mysoginist Holylanders! Crap like this (and worse) is going on right now! Oh, for a better world... I do believe in God, but I KNOW he is NOT a sadical mysoginist, He does NOT like people to suffer, and when He created the sexes, He did NOT mean for one sex to exploit and make miserable the other! He IS a God of love (believe it or not), and He would LIKE (He actually commanded!) that everybody love one another and treat each other right!
Rating: Summary: dated outlook Review: A friend recommended this book and I looked forward to reading it, however, it is very dated in its understanding of biology (eugenics as the "solution," perhaps even the final solution) and its social attitudes (e.g., homosexuality, or as she calls it "the gay syndrome," is a biological defect which has been "solved" in her futuristic society), and just reads like a poorly written first novel.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful! Review: This is one of the first of Ms. Tepper's books that I read, and I was amazed. I felt that, true to form, she took a touchy subject and put a very thought-provoking spin on it. I am very sorry to hear that some people found it offensive or incomprehensible. I for one was extremely impressed.
Rating: Summary: Some people just don't get it... Review: I read reviews from other readers, and those that feel offended, uncomfortable or whatever by the book, actually just don't get it. The story should be taken to heart in this violent world, where every page of history is written in blood. If you think that is the way it is supposed to be, then read the book again. The book gives an very interesting insight and point of view. For those who didn't get it: perhaps you are just not ready yet...or maybe you're just another "Michael" or "Chernon".
Rating: Summary: More to it then you actually think Review: I had to read this book for class. At first i dreaded it and then once i actually finished i enjoy it. The whole idea of the nuclear war and men controlling everything is pretty close to true. Look around there has never been a female President and only for awhile as Prime minister. All miltary actions controlled by men. Men are controlling and there are more violent ones then sympatheic. I am a male who enjoyed and realized what damage we actually do do. The book brings up one of the greatest points of what could happen in this world. Just think it is the Year 2000 and anything could happen. This book gives good insight and has much background meaning to it than you can keep track of.
Rating: Summary: A great book is one you are sorry to see end. Review: I could not put this one down. I loved Grass, but this one was even more enthralling. There were so many questions I was asking myself during the book and I was hoping they would be answered. They were. The story kept me facinated throughout. This book does not take too kindly to men. It shows them as the mighty and powerful warriors who think they are in charge, when in fact it's really the women. They let the men think they are in charge but when push come to shove, boy do they let the men know who is REALLY in charge. Unfortunately, those men never live to tell it. This made me reflect on gov't conspiracy and how we would never know who is really running the show. Makes you think. I can't wait to read more by Tepper.
Rating: Summary: It was a really good book, it had a lot to say. Review: it was a really thinkky book that kept you interested but wasn't too deep and intellectual. i really liked it.
Rating: Summary: just goes to show you... Review: women can, indeed, write about social engineering with calculation. i suspect the problem a lot of people have with this book is that it's women regarding men as objects and not the other 'way round. i can only say, this is the best of speculative fiction: taking social and scientific what-ifs and extrapolating them into interesting narrative.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic! Review: Sheri S. Tepper launched herself to the top of her relm with The Gate to Women's Country! Any SciFi fan will enjoy how the story unfolds and pulls you in.
