Summary: Forget the Movie ! An unforgetable novel !
Review: " What Dreams May Come " is one of the best novels I've read in years. Extremely thought provoking concerning what happens to us in the afterlife and how maybe we should think about what kind of life we are living right now. If you saw the movie but didn't get much from it, you have to read the book, it is so much more than a vehicle for Hollywood.

Summary: What a disillusion!!
Review: After having read almost all the reviews of this book I simply had to have it but frankly, I do not understand all those lyrical works. The book was a disappointment from the start with a pathetic, all-time low end. Even if Mr. Matheson likes us to believe the depiction of heaven is based on scientific research, in my view it is pure conjecture and a subjective portrayal of what perhaps he would like it to look like. As far as the book being a support for people recently bereaved as others have suggested; I think a shoulder to cry on and the loving friendship from those around us will prove to be more effective! Oh yes, like one or two others I stayed up late too to finish this book but for an entirely different reason: to be able to start reading an exciting book the next morning.

Summary: VERY THOUGHT PROVOKING
Review: After seeing the movie I decided to read the book obviously thinking that the book can't be as good as the movie particularly after seeing the movie first; well I was wrong, the book was far more thought provoking and you know what? I would give almost anything to see my dog again, after almost twenty years after his death I still dream about Abner and I still miss him. And for those of you with this theological pre-conceived notion about life after death; loosen up and enjoy a really really cerebral book and if you get even a little misty eyed reading it because you thought of someone or something..........then the book touched you.

Summary: Serious, Thought Provoking, and Emotional
Review: The story begins with the main characters death, similar to "Made In Heaven" and like in that story Heaven isn't Heaven without the one that you love. The author uses a similar pretense, but is still original in the presentation. I would love to listen in while this author and and Spider Robinson talk about their ideas on life after death. Some of the thinking in this book is similar to Spider Robinson's "Lifehouse" series.

The hero dies, but is unable to pass on to the next plain because he feels his wife's pain. When he finally passes on and reaches "summerland" (Heaven), he can not find happiness without Ann, his wife and soulmate. While he is making this discovery his wife kills herself because she feels that life without him isn't worth living. The Hero searches through Hell and only through his love for her and his sacrificing himself is any good accomplished.

The story is deep and serious (it may belong in the religous section rather than the Science Fiction section) but still a good read.

Summary: Definintely gives a new perspective on death.
Review: About a year before I read this book, I went through the grieving process for the first time with the death of my grandmohter. This book really helped me understand what that all means, "to die." I also read "Talking to heaven" by James Van Praagh, and it's like the 2 authors were sitting together when they wrote their books! Even if life after death is not so, these 2 books at least make grieving a little easier.

Summary: Must Read!
Review: I found the book to be much more inspiring than the overindulgent movie (many of the key spiritual messages were lost in the special effects). This book is a MUST READ for anyone interested in New Age material.

Summary: ABSOLUTELY SPELLBINDING!!!
Review: I really enjoyed the movie! I have yet to read the book, but you can bet that I will and soon too. The author did very well with this piece of work in that he did not attempt to influence anyones Religious or Theological beliefs. It took me to a level of emotion that I try very hard to keep deep inside of me. The events in the movie literally snatched emotion from me and made me deal with feelings that I try to keep a lid on. To sum it all up, it is a great movie, you have to be "open minded" and you have to be willing to step out of your comfort zone to grasp meaning and understanding to what is happpening.

Summary: This was an exciting and interesting journey to the "beyond"
Review: I really enjoyed this book, it was fresh, innovative and open minded.

The imagery was vivid, the storyline riveting and the message was clear - Live a good life NOW if you want a good AFTERLIFE.

This is a good read for anyone; no matter what your spiritual preference.

I could not put it down!

Summary: Its vision of the afterlife makes perfect sense
Review: After reading this book, I felt inspired and couldn't wait to discover heaven for myself (but I'll wait until that time comes). I could have done without the sappy love story, but felt that the writer used the characters to make more sense of the afterlife (kind of like in "The Celestine Prophecy"--the story is less important than the message). This view of the afterlife, describes the kind of heaven that I always imagined, and the meaning of life makes more sense than any religion has offered. After reading this book, and feeling so inspired and fully enjoying life, I went to see the film and nearly threw up! The film was terrible and ruined any feeling that I had after reading the book. Don't bother with the movie, read the book over again. I recommend "Reaching to Heaven" by James van Praag, who describes heaven and the meaning of life very similar to this book, even down to the actual title "The Summerland" as the first level of heaven. He's either a plagirist or the principles in the book are true.

Summary: My all time favorite book!
Review: I first read this book in the winter of 1997 and I find myself reading this book over and over again. I was disappointed with the movie though. For once could they make a movie without changing the storyline?
