Rating: Summary: Waylander Review: All of Waylander's instincts had screamed at him to spurn the contract from Kaem the Cruel, the killer of nations. But he had ignored them. He had made his kill. And even as he went to collect his gold, he knew that he had been betrayed. Now the Dark Brotherhood and the hounds of chaos were hunting him, even as Kaem's armies waged war on the Drenai lands, intent on killing every man, woman, and child. The Drenai soldiers were doomed to ultimate defeat, and chaos would soon reign. Then Waylander came. Another thriller from David Gemmell, and possibly his best book ever. I couldn't put this book down from the excitement. I highly recommend this book.

Rating: Summary: Outstanding fantasy writing Review: Among the thousands of fantasy/sci-fi novels that have entered my brain via my eyes over the years, "Waylander" shines above the crowd. Author David Gemmell exhibits true epic-saga-creation talent, and a genuine skill in telling an entertaining and gripping tale.
In search myself of creative inspiration as a screenwriter, I pulled several old favorites from my shelves. It must have been the hand of fate (which looked suspiciously similar to my own manipulative member) that added "Waylander" to the stack. A sufficient interval had passed since my last reading for the force of this excellent work to once again make an impact.
I remember clearly the first time I had the good fortune to experience this particular story, because I immediately followed up by journeying to several bookshops seeking other Gemmell novels. Alas, at that time, I quested in vain.
Since then the Internet has brought mankind out of the dark ages of information (hallelujah!) Thus I came here to Amazon, where fortune smiled and my search rewarded by the discovery of a large number of other Gemmell works.
I shall look forward to returning at last to Gemmell's Realm.

Rating: Summary: A solid, enjoyable effort. . . Review: David Gemmell has proven time and time again with his Drenai saga that he is one of the fantasy genre's shining figures, and while "Waylander" is one of his weaker works, it is a fine, page-turning read even so. That speaks volumes about him as an author.
Despite his distinguished body of work, though, variety is not his strong suit. Waylander, a former assassin whose chance meeting with an eccentric priest pushes him toward redemption, is an aging warrior with a tragic past facing almost insurmountable odds. If you're a Gemmell fan, this basic setup should sound familiar. And yes, there are bloody sieges, and amidst this elements of the magical and supernatural. Despite the almost overwhelming sameness in Gemmell's themes and plots, though, his characters and their persistent humanity never cease to fascinate. It is Gemmell's skill at building characters that makes him exceptional. "Waylander" is full of great characters. There's plenty of sword and sorcery action, but the drama is every bit as pervasive. What makes "Waylander" weaker than some other Drenai novels, though, is its uneven pacing and out-of-focus plotline. Other choices are strange - Waylander is being hunted by Nadir werebeasts, but he is also headed toward a destination that is haunted by... werebeasts. It's kind of confusing. Though there's scarcely a character in the book that isn't somehow interesting, not all of them ever seem to actually go anywhere. The book's epilogue hastily tries to clean things up, but does only a mediocre job of it. All in all, though, "Waylander" is a good, solid book, and I recommend it. Furthermore, I recommend the entire Drenai saga without reservation.
Rating: Summary: Great Read Review: David Gemmell must live in a fantasy world to be able to create storys as satisfyingly readable as this the waylander is a dark brooding man with astonishing skills yet he is also shown to be venerable and mortal as is shown by him getting older. Well worth a read to anyone
Rating: Summary: Original and Excellent Value Review: Gemmell writes skillfully
Rating: Summary: An excellent book by a superb author. Review: Gemmell's entire 'Drenai' series is truly exceptional, and this book was my personal favorite. Gemmell has a real knack for creating characters with inner flaws & torments, making you identify with them, and then showing the true strength of their spirit through adversity.
I can't recommend this book (and the series) highly enough. You won't be disappointed
