Rating: Summary: A wonderful book! Review: I picked up Wayfarer Redemption on a whim and loved it! Most recently, I ordered Enchanter and I couldn't put this book down. From the moment I was introduced to Axis in the first one, to the moment he embraces his heritage in Enchanter. The twists and turns and intricacies of this plot are wonderful! The characters really reach out and grab you. I found myself wanting to be a part of the Prophecy. Sara Douglass is a wonderful author and I eagerly await the next book in the series!
Rating: Summary: Good, though not as good as its prequel Review: I read BattleAxe, the first book of the Wayfarer Redemption, and found it one of the best fantasies I have ever read. Though Enchanter does not quite measure up to the first book, it was still very good reading. The largest problem with this book that I can point out is the sudden addition of elements to the plot. There were some moments when reading this that I found myself wondering if the same author added a particular line to the novel that wrote the rest of it, because it greatly contrasted the normal plot of the story. However, these moments are few and far between, and I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed the first, or likes reading fantasy in general.
Rating: Summary: Typical stuff.... Review: I read the first book in the series on the airplane, and later this book during a road trip. I wanted a think tome to pass the time-and pass I did. These books are good enough to entertain and get you throught the boredom of the day. But would I recommend them? No, I don't think so. Here are my reasons.Characters: Somewhere between fully fleshed out and cut-out (depending on the character). The central character in particular, Axis, has wild emotional swings, and seems too prone to petulance to really inspire admiration. His ideological paradigm shift is very sketchily drawn out-as are the changes in the supporting characters. The author attempts to create some depth by making Axis (and other characters) alternatively sympathetic and rougish. I don't know if this works-she has created two dimensional characters (both good & evil in one person), but they don't have much depth. Plot: Ms. Douglass has an annoying tendency to foreshadow so much that you start to feel the characters are totally idiotic. I'll give you a quick example. There is one character (Azhure for those who have read the book) who is peculiar. She is more than the simple peasant woman she seems, and this is clear in the middle of Book 1. But it takes until the end of Book 2 (some 1,000 pages) for Douglass to allow the characters to figure this out. She hints over & over, as major characters ignore incongruities and obviously clues that Azhure isn't who she seems to be. In fact, I had a good idea of who she was by the beginning of Book 1, but Ms. Douglass continues to pile it on and hint. This is a clumsy use of a common plot device. Realism: Ms. Douglass hasn't quite elucidated in her own head the different levels of the nobility. Traditionally, there is a heirarchy of King->Duke->Earl->Baron->Gentry. Ms. Douglass uses the middle levels interchangeably fairly often, though it is clear that Dukes are somehow superior to the others, Barons inexplicably rule whole provinces (what should be duchies). And Earls are also added in, though there is little explaination of the differences.
Rating: Summary: Awful and disappointing Review: I started out with the Wayfarer Redemption Book 1 and was excited at discovering a great new author. I loved the characters and the path the story (I thought) was taking. So I bought Enchanter (Book 2) in anticipation of a continuation of said wonders. To say I was disappointed is not going far enough. Every character, except Faraday, disgusted me with their actions. I had loved the characters (the protagonists, at least) and what Douglass wrote in that second book destroyed them. In desparation I skimmed through the third book hoping it would redeem the characters, but to no avail. I am a major fantasy fan, and I decided to try to sell my copy of Enchanter, but no one else wanted it either. This is a series to steer clear of, read something else, anything else would be an improvement.
Rating: Summary: I thought it was dumb Review: I'm not sure what's touching other people's souls about these books. Theyre kinda like bad supermarket peperbacks. the writing is disorganized and the dialog is dumb. I'd like to see Faraday fall off a cliff.
Rating: Summary: Want A Fight? Review: Nonstop action from cover to cover!! I need them to come out with the rest soon!
Rating: Summary: Enchanted Review: Okay, Sara Douglass knows no boundaries in her stories, breaking every social rule there is, she wove a web around me as a reader and i could not tear myself away from her book. These books infuriated me and the story did not go how I wanted it too... sunshine, lots of smiles flowere and everybodys happy. Nope Douglass is not afraid of mixing tragedy in her books and her heroes are NOT perfect people. I loved every second of it and there isnt a story closer to how people REALLY act.
Rating: Summary: A 2:00 a.m. kind of book Review: One would think that we might tire of yet another "epic" series. That certainly was my initial reaction when I was given Book 1 of Sara Douglass' work. I have been quite pleasantly surprised. Book 2 introduces yet more characters and subplots into the mix, yet manages to hold your interest until the end. I was expecting it to be the (all too) typical "middle" book of a series: not much in the way of anything new, just a lot of character and plot development. Rather, it holds your interest all of the way through. While there are certainly passages which slow down, they are few and far between. Indeed, it is the final pages of the book that are by far the best. I thoroughly enjoyed it and am anxiously awaitng Book 3.
Rating: Summary: Very disappointing Review: Reading the jacket on the first book, I was looking forward to getting into a great story. Well, it didn't happen. After reading the first book, I was a bit let down. I just couldn't empathize with any of the main characters, and while the story had possibilities, it just came out disjointed. I went ahead and got the second book, hoping that I just needed to get into the story a bit more. I got about halfway through it, and found that I truly despised the main characters! I quit reading halfway through "Enchanter". I was mostly disgusted. The best I could do was feel sorry for Faraday. She's in a bad situation, but it doesn't look like any of the current 'good guys' (and I use that term loosely) are going to do her any good. I'll just mention the main hero, though. The hero, Axis, was the big reason I quit reading this book. Axis seems to do alot of his thinking between his legs. It's difficult to like a character who you wouldn't trust around your kids (especially any female ones). He seems to have the concepts of love and lust mixed up a bit. In short, I was hoping for a sweeping fantasy, but what is here is just plain disappointing. If you like heroes who seem to be pulled along by their desires (either to "save the world" or just for sex with whoever is available), this book is for you. Otherwise, don't bother.
