Summary: Enjoyable story
Review: Enchanter = book two of the Wayfarer Redemption series.

Pro = Continued in the same enjoyable, story telling form as the first book

Pro = Some nice plot twists. Never really sure what was going to happen next.

Pro = Same enjoyable characters and more background revealed.

Con = This book resolves the conflict between Axis and his half-brother, Bornheld. Felt the final conflict was a bit anti-climatic.

Con = the battle between the armies seemed poorly handled. There was no real stategy, flanking of forces, etc. It was one big crashing of two forces and seeing who wins. Kind of like a brawl vs. a technical boxing match. So much potential that the author didn't take advantage of.

Overall = worth continuing the series

Summary: Very enjoyable.
Review: Enchanter is the second book of the Axis Trilogy (beginning with BattleAxe _The Wayfarer Redemption in the US_ and ending with StarMan).

After the terrible battle of Gorkenfort, Axis is spending some time with his new family, among the Icarii. While learning the songs that are the core of his Enchanter powers, he is also training the Icarii Strike Force, among which the beautiful Azhure, for the oncoming confrontation with his hated brother Borneheld and Gorgrael's Skrealings.

In the meantime, Faraday, now wed to Borneheld, patiently awaits the return of the man she loves, managing from time to time to escape the bitter reality with her magical powers and to link with the Mother.

This middle volume is definitely focused on Axis marching across Achar, determined to reunite the three races, Acharites, Icarii and Avar, and to recreate the legendary kingdom of Tencendor; of Faraday and the Avar, little is said. However, everything slowly clicks into place, and it soon becomes clear that each character has a role to play, that all must fulfill their part of the Prophecy in order to save the world from a Gorgrael who is becoming more powerful with every passing day.

Even though the pace slows down at times, Enchanter is a suspenseful novel with some great battle scenes and above all, believable characters. The outcome of certain intrigues might sometimes seem too easy, or to have come out of nowhere, but as a whole it is a very enjoyable story. The end was most surprising and I'm looking forward to discover what happens next.

Summary: Less Than Enchanting
Review: Enchanter picks up immediately after the final events of The Wayfarer Redemption with the fall of Gorkenfort. There is no synopsis at the start of Enchanter to recount the events of the previous book. This would normally be a concern, however the author, Sara Douglass, presents the necessary background material during the course of the narrative.

As with the previous book, Enchanter is told from an omniscient point of view. The unseen narrator dips into the thoughts of one character after another, often jumping through several characters in a single page. One moment Axis is talking and the narrator states what he thinks and feels; the next moment the narrator states what Azhure feels in response. This fluid style of storytelling adds an interpretive layer between the characters and the reader that inhibits the formation of a deep, sympathetic bond.

One of the first lessons writers hear when they study the craft of writing fiction is "show, don't tell." It is more effective for an author to show what a character's actions and allow the reader to interpret the meaning. Don't tell the reader that Black Bart is evil; rather show him kicking a puppy across the street as he is on his way to rob a little old lady. Let the reader draw his own conclusions from what he sees Black Bart doing. Often, the narrator in Enchanter interpreted the feelings and thoughts of the characters rather than allowing their actions and expressions to speak for themselves, preventing the reader from being an active participant in the story.

Prophecies are tricky, not only for characters, but for authors as well. If a prophecy is vague, it may not make sense even after it is fulfilled. At the other extreme, a prophecy that is transparent leaves no room for misinterpretation and becomes a blueprint for the plot of the story. An effective prophecy needs the delicate level of murkiness that appears clear only in hindsight.

Unfortunately, The Prophecy of the Destroyer falls closer to the blueprint end of the spectrum. All the characters know the first two verses due to a convenient enchantment that ensures all who hear it will never forget it. They frequently discuss the meaning, carefully avoiding correct, and often obvious, interpretations beforehand. Whenever a fragment of the prophecy is fulfilled, one of the characters provides and unambiguous statement confirming what everyone just saw.

Despite these narrative weaknesses, the plot of Enchanter is compelling. As the relationships evolve through the course of this novel, they head toward disaster, often knowingly. Even though there is little doubt that the heroes will win the day, they often do so in a manner that causes a great deal of pain.

Enchanter is an ambitious novel. It has a strong plot filled with powerful characters. Overall, it is an interesting early novel from one of Australia's most successful fantasy authors.

Summary: worth reading
Review: Enchanter picks up soon after the first ends: Axis, the StarMan is spending time training at Talon Spike to become the Enchanter of prophecy that he rightfully is. He has to find a way to unite the three peoples of Ichar. Azhure plays a larger part in this novel, somehow entwined with the prophecy in a way that is kept a mystery (one of those mysteries that keeps you going no matter how late at night it is). More truths are revealed, but at the same time they're half-truths... Gorgrael is lurking in the shadows, of course, ready to pounce. Over-all, it was an excellent read and now I'm craving the next novel in the series! If you're a fan of epic fantasy, or just good writing in general, you should definitely pick Sara Douglass's novels up. I just wish they would be released on American shores faster!

DEFINATE READS: THE LORD OF THE RINGS and THE PRICE OF IMMORTALITY.

Summary: Captivating!!!
Review: Enchanter was a book that I didn't put down for almost 2 days straight! The story was awsome and the characters continued to grow in amazing ways.

A great thing about this book was that throughout the book Axis continues to grow and change. He discovers his enchanters powers and learns to use them. Later on he is torn between 2 different women who he loves and will have to chose. Its great how he can be seen as human and have faults and make mistakes just like everybody else.

Another surprise was Azhure. She comes out of the background and into the action in this book when she first discovers her skills with a bow. Later on in the book she becomes an important commander in Axis's army. She is a well rounded character with many mysteries and surprises.

This book was an amazing read and i would definetly recommend this book to readers of sara douglass. It would be best if you read her first book in the series, Battleaxe, before you read Enchanter so you can have a full understanding of what is happening. It will suffice as a stand alone book, but is 53453 times better after reading the first book. Good job Sara Douglass.

Summary: Enchanter by Sara Douglass
Review: Enchanter, the sequel to Sara Douglass' Wayfarer Redemption was awesome. I really liked the first book in the series due to its originality. I was afraid that her second book would dissapoint me; it didn't. I thorougly enjoyed this book. Ms. Douglass kept me enthralled with her vision and never bored me for a second. For years I held Robert Jordan as my favorite phantasy author, but his books have become rather stale. This series is verdant with new ideas. I am reluctant to add that Sara Douglass has supplanted Mr. Jordan as my favorite phantasy author!

Summary: Magical world but unlikable characters
Review: From the north, ice wraiths swarm, threatening to wipe out all of the civilized people of Achar. Within Achar, one man seeks to preserve the ancient ways while his half-brother tries to create a new world based on uniting the three races who have warred for thousands of years. A third half-brother commands the wraiths and even more fearful spawn. Yet the heavy hand of prophesy, and an enchanter dead for thousands of years, weighs down on all of them.

Axis, bastard child of two races, attempts to fight the enemy from the north while creating a new world. Perhaps spurred on by the prophesy, good fortune follows him, bringing him new recruits, giving him access to enchanter secrets lost for thousands of years, and allowing him to prevail over enemies that seem overwhelming. Yet his own arrogance and his inability to choose between two women, wanting to keep both of them to himself, haunts him.

In ENCHANTER, author Sara Douglass continues her WAYFARER REDEMPTION series with Axis's march toward destiny and prophesy. Douglass handicapps herself by making Axis so fundamentally unlikable. Each of the three brothers seems so caught up in their own hatred and ambition, that it is sometimes difficult to remember that Axis is the hero of this story. Despite moments of clunky writing and long passages of exposition, Douglass's world-building skills are strong and she has created an intriguing and 'real' world of magic and power.

I would have preferred to see more character development and some sense that Axis has learned from what he has gone through. Still, ENCHANTER has its moments of pure magic.

Summary: Enchanter
Review: Great continuation of the Wayfarer story. I couldn't put the book down. The emotion of the story is what captivates from the first paragraph. I've read Fantasy fiction for a number of years and I've never come across a story with the potential to span multiple volumes and keep the readers interest. Often times a set of events are pushed through a story by a phrophecy so complex and vague you began to wonder why it was mentioned to begin with. Not here, you can understand this prophecy and all that it implies. And often times you find yourself recalling what was phropheised while reading the book. The Magic, Swordplay, and Blood are described in such detail that you're actually able to see the events of the story in your minds-eye. If you are Fan Fic reader (Jordan,Hickman,Salvatore ....) Buy and enjoy this series. It's money well spent!!!

Summary: Wow! Keep 'em Coming!
Review: Having just finished The Wayfarer Redemption, I was relieved to be able to pick up this second book in the series and have the action pretty much take right up where the first one left off! No annoying plot rehash or character build-up. This book presumes that you have read Wayfarer Redemption first, so if you have not, you need to do so! I find myself having trouble putting this book down at night, and it's not a terribly relaxing read, either - characters that you really grow to care about are put in precarious situations to say the least. Very well-written if you can look past the occasional typos that for some reason were not edited out. I can't wait to read the next one!

Summary: OK I'M HOOKED
Review: I AM AN AVID READER OF BOTH FANTASY AND SCIENCE FICTION. I WOULD SUGGEST BOTH OF THESE BOOKS BY SARA DOUGLASS TO ANYONE WHO ENJOYS A CONTINUING SAGA IN THE FANTSY MODE. THE STORY LINE HELD MY INTEREST TO THE EXTENT THAT, THOUGH I USUALLY WAIT FOR THE PAPERBACK RELEASE, I WENT OUT AND BOUGHT THE HARD COVER OF ENCHANTER. I FOUND THE CHARACTERS BELEIVABLE AND I HAD SOME TO HATE AND SOME TO LOVE. I CAN HARDLY WAIT FOR THE STORY TO CONTINUE. I ENJOYED THE FACT THAT ALTHOUGH THE BOOKS ARE A CONTINUING STORY, I WAS ABLE TO GET SOME CONCLUSION TO THE STORY AT THE END OF EACH OF THE BOOKS. IT SOMETIME DRIVES ME CRAZY TO READ A FANTASY BOOK THAT LEAVES ME HOLDING MY BREATH AT THE END OF THE BOOK AND I MUST WAIT SEVERAL MONTHS TO FIND OUT THE CONCLUSION. IF THE STORY IS WRITTEN WELL ENOUGH THEY CAN AT LEAST GIVE ME SOME CONCLUSION AND HOLD MY INTEREST FOR THE NEXT BOOK TO BE RELEASED. I MY OPINION, I SARA DOUGLASS CONTINUES WITH THIS STYLE OF WRITING, I WILL HAVE TO PUT HER UP THERE WITH SOME OF MY FAVORITES, IE TERRY BROOKS, DAVID & LEAH EDDINS. KEEP UP THE WONDERFUL STORY TELLING FOR THOSE OF US WHO REALLY ENJOY FANTASY.
