Summary: Northern Lights
Review: It's a good book, except when you are required to study and study and study it. Then it loses its fun.

Summary: Older Readers Too
Review: As an older reader (45) I may be outside the target audience but found this book outstanding reading nonetheless. Well written and highly inventive it sets a cracking pace, never flagging despite its length. While it can be read by younger kids it fascinated me by prompting some profound moral and theological questions, although young readers (like my pre-teens) may miss this altogether. I am now eager to read the remaining books in the trilogy not only to follow the adventures but to see which side of these questions Pullman comes down on - far from obvious at the end of this first book.

If the quality is maintained in the sequels, comparisons between Pullman and CS Lewis will be well justified. This book certainly has the child friendly nature of the Narnia stories but without the ham-fisted parallels to biblical tales. The subtlety of his moral questions rank more alongside Lewis's adult fiction such as Out of the Silent Planet or Perelandra. This is a childrens book that can be read by a bright 10 to 12 year old, will challenge intelligent teens and still provide food for thought for parents. One of the best books for children or adults I have read in some time.

Summary: Magical story
Review: This is a magical book, a truly inspirational piece of writing from Philip Pullman. It focuses on the life of a young girl named Lyra and her daemon. Lyra leaves the places she knows well and sets out on a journey, not knowing the true purpose of her trip until she is completely caught up in it. The story takes the reader completely into Lyra's world and lets you enjoy the twists of the plot, observing the life of the life of the young heroine as she grows along the way. AND...guess what...there's a sequel!

Summary: One of the greatest books of the 20th century
Review: This is a brilliant book, suitable for children and adults alike. A wonderful fantasy set in a world very similar to early 20th century England, but not quite. The heroine, Lyra, sets out on a mission to Scandinavia to find her uncle who is reputedly held captive by armour-wearing polar bears... absolutely brilliant!
