Rating: Summary: This book needs to go back in print Review: If only to satisfy the GenXer's constant desire for 80's retro music, the time has never been better to rerelease this novel. A believeable fairy tale, this was one of my favorite books from the first time I read it (at age 12) until today.
Rating: Summary: Much too good not to reprint!!! Review: I'm not going to describe the story, the other reviewers do that well. The book was totally delightful. I wanted to get copies for friends, and was astounded to find they weren't available (the books, not the friends) anywhere in the US. My own copy has been carefully put away now!
Rating: Summary: Thoroughly cute. Review: Lightweight modern fantasy, but not in a *bad* way. The story of a fey rock-n-roll band's romp through warring Unseen Powers is sustained by excellent characterization and a deft touch for dialogue; if there's a bit too much i-wanna-be-a-rock-star posturing in the plot (along with the standard bad lyrics), well, we all wanted to be rock stars when we were kids. Sprightly, fun. Pick it up if you've got a couple of hours to kill.
Rating: Summary: Beautifully rendered characters, enchanting theme Review: I also can't believe this book is out of print. There's a lot of fantasy that I don't like because of the poor character development and plot lines..but this one is really good. I've re-read it many times. The way Ms. Bull takes the common city environment and slowly adds the mystical element is quite well done.
Rating: Summary: Faery reality serves well! Review: It is sad to see such a fine book out of print. This is an amazing book, well paced, well plotted, with fine and interesting characters. On top of this, Emma Bull knows from her fey! This is a whopping GREAT book, next to impossible to put down -- I have read my own copy about 5 times now and will do so again in the very near future. GET THIS BOOK BACK IN PRINT!!!
Rating: Summary: War for the oaks is a definite multiple must read. Review: The number of times I've re-read this book is uncountable. I highly recommend this book and I wonder why it's not BACK in print! sri
Rating: Summary: War for the Oaks is a fabulous dream. Review: I first read War for the Oaks in the mid-80's and I still read it every few months. It gives me a thrill and a chill just to think of it. The characters are markedly real even when they are fey, and the story moves at a pleasantly speedy pace.Fantasy readers should know that Emma Bull ranks right up there with the greats-- Anne McCaffrey's ability to suspend your disbelief is very much in evidence here. You will feel so at home with Eddi and the others, even the queen of Faerie, that you will never want to leave. I LOVE THIS BOOK!
Rating: Summary: If only more fantasy novels were like this one... Review: I read a whole lot of fantasy and very few books even come close to War for the Oaks. This book was funny, interesting, kept me on the edge of my seat, always kept me guessing, and in general was a fabulous read. I absolutely love this book and am looking forward to many more Emma Bull novels.
Rating: Summary: I Can't Believe This is Out of Print! Review: _War for the Oaks_ is quite simply one of the best urban fantasies ever written. God knows that may not sound like much, but this is head and shoulders above almost all of the rest. More of them should be like this. Bull makes the presence of Faerie in a late twentieth century American city believable (a difficult task, as any remotely sensitive person who's ever had the misfortune to live in such a place will know). Add to that brilliant characters and what are probably the some of the best descriptions of music and musical interaction ever written (as a musician and a writer, I know full well how difficult that is), and we have a true classic of twentieth century fantasy. I am disgusted to think that this novel is out of print, especially when I see all the tripe that floods the sf/f racks today.
Rating: Summary: What a great book! Review: Throughout War For the Oaks, Bull displays a thorough knowledge of British / Celtic folklore and folk music, and the music culture of modern Minneapolis. Manages to be both stylish and engaging. One of her best, and one of the best modern fantasies ever.
