Summary: Solid book, great ending
Review: I enjoyed this book because it was well written and had a good story. Very easy and enjoyable to read, just like all of his others.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Very Jordan-esque, But With a Stackpole Twist
Review: If you love the grand, epic fantasy, then you'll love this book. Great mythological structure, Stackpole's usual interesting characters, and a lot of adventure, twists and turns make this a book you won't want to put down.

I can't wait until the next one!

Summary: damn good book
Review: I agree with one of the other review stating that it is very similar to the talion book.. its still a damn good book but i can see the similar style. I have a feeling that the series will be very good (in fact i ran out to buy the 2nd book as soon as i was done with this one )so i highly recommend it.

Summary: Not as good as his other stuff
Review: I am a pretty avid fans of Mike Stackpole's works, and I think that his previous three Bantam fantasies have been very good. Since I have heard about this "DragonCrown War Cycle" several months ago I have been eagerly awaiting the first book, and while it wasn't bad, I was quite dissapointed. First of all, Stackpole's themes and characters are getting a little old. Hawkin's is essentially the same person as Corran Horn from X-wing or Nolan from Talion. Also, the author seems to have a fascination with coupling members of different species romantically. Nothing wrong with this; we've just seen it before.

The action scenes (and there were plenty of them) were cool, neat, and typically well thought out, but they lacked the harrowing type of feel from his previous works. At the beginning of every conflict, there was never really any doubt who would win or what would happen. Also, there weren't as many neat plot twists as we're used to, and virtually none of Stackpole's interesting politics which I've grown to know and love.

Still, the book is quite entertaining, without a whole lot of depth. It's one of those books which would make an awesome movie. The world doesn't seem as well built as in Stackpole's previous fantasies. However, it's my understanding that Dark Glory War is to the rest of this Cycle what Hobbit was to Lord of the Rings, so I still have high hopes for the series.

There were nearly enough high points and interesting climaxes near the end of the book to raise it to 4 stars, but not quite. To close, I'd like to reiterate the oft-heard statement, "don't judge a book by its cover." All too true for most of Stackpole's works. His fantasies, with the exception of Talion, just have very silly looking covers.

Stackpole's also gotten rid of his cool, humorous about the author section. On an end note, did anyone else notice that the temerices were identical to the raptors from Jurassic Park except that they had wings?

Summary: A TIE WITH TALION: REVENANT!
Review: Mike Stackpole is at his BEST. This book is AMAZING! Tarrant Hawkings and his three best frieds get a Moon Month they never expected: fighting temeryces, gibberkin, and a variety of other creatures. And instead of staying in thier home town of Valsina, they have to go to the capital, Yslin, to report the danger of the temeryx and gibberkin attacks. On top of all that one of the boys finds a magical sword that makes the wielder invincible. This book is a must read for any fan of fantasy! Other book reccommendations: Talion: Revenant, A Hero Born, An Enemy Reborn, and any other book by Mike Stackpole.

Summary: Outstanding!
Review: This is an outstanding book. Michael Stackpole is easily one of the best authors writing today. If you have not read any of Michael's books, this is indicative of his writing. The character's are memorable, and the story keeps you reading. The world is original and colorful. This is the first of four, and I can't wait for the next. If you read any Fantasy books this definitely should be one of them!

Summary: good prelude to what might be a decent series [no spoilers]
Review: "The Dark Glory War" is the prelude novel in The DragonCrown War Cycle series approximately one generation before the series officially starts. It is an entertaining book filled with creative battles and interesting people and will provide a strong groundwork for new characters further in the series.

Although the mask that certain cultures wear is an unusual concept, I am not fond of it since a good smack could dislodge the mask to blind the person during combat. Various monsters seem to be hybrid or typical fantasy creatures with different classifications. Also, there are some moments where a physical description is challenging to envision.

Aside from the above aggravations, overall the book was good and I would recommend it. The ending was a shock. I look forward to continuing the series.

Thank you.

Summary: The Best Stackpole book (and that is saying something)
Review: The Dark Glory War is the best piece of fantasy that Michael Stackpole has written. From the first page I was engrossed in the story line. Stackpole's first person style lends a different element to his work. The main character (Hawkins) is likeable from the start and you are rooting for him as the story proceeds.

Readers be warned...the title is accurate. This book is Dark. If the saga of Hawkins ended with this novel you would be very, very disappointed. Luckily Hawkins' story continues in the DragonCrown War Cycle trilogy. Read them all.
