Rating: Summary: Snore Review: I think that this very so-so book will have most appeal for persons that weep a lot and cry out in joy and pound objects with their fists, or are otherwise prone to hysterics. For most, this one will put you to sleep. Protagonist is a hysteric who puts herself in the face of trouble and waits for big strong men to rescue her.
Rating: Summary: Kind of average Review: As a reader of good folklore and fairy tales, I found this a watered down, somewhat soap opera version of a very beautiful story. I'm not sure what all the hype is about; this isn't a bad tale, but it's nothing to write home about. I might read her next book, but only in paperback or from the library.
Rating: Summary: I LOVED this book!! Review: This is a wonderful re-telling of an old old story. Very well written, and surprisingly powerful for a first novel. The characters are masterfully developed, the main character Sorcha is someone we can all learn many things from. She teaches us about love, selflessness, patience, self-discipline, etc. Such a hard road for one so seemingly unprepared. This girl is strong . . . strong enough to withstand the very worst --- and keep on going. A real mythic hero. This is one of those rare books that you can't put down, but are so sad to finish. I was actually crying and laughing, raging at injustice, cheering for the good guys, hating the bad guys . . . all the things you really want in a fantasy story. I just can't say enough good things about this book. And I can't wait for book 2 and book 3. Good reading!!!
Rating: Summary: It Rocked my world Review: Daughter of the Forest was one of the best books that I had ever read. During the last 300 pages I could not put it down. It is one of those books that makes me react out loud, and it drives me to learn more about my Irish backround.
Rating: Summary: Celtic Magic Review: Sorcha was the only girl out of 7 children and her brothers looked out after her a lot because their father seemed not to care for any of them. Later her brothers and her father fell under an evil spell and it was up to her to save them because only she could do it. The only catch was is that she could only save them by performing an extremely painful task and chosing between saving her brothers or saving the man that she loves. Not many books have moved me this way. It is a book of magic, honor, destiny, and the fight to overcome fear. I've never read anything similar to this book, but it was very suspenseful and it kept my intrest.
Rating: Summary: I couln't put it down Review: Even though it was a a retelling of the "Swan Princess", that ISis familiar to many,it was also new with the Celtic legends. I also found the familial connections inspiring and and easy to relate to. It was a trifle predictable but still kept you wondering what would happen next and not totally "Happily Ever after." Definitly worth your time but I hate it when the next in a trilogy isn't available now!
Rating: Summary: Mystical & magical Review: I loved the book! I could not put it down! It is full of mysticsm and magic. I can not wait for the next book in the trilogy!!
Rating: Summary: Pagan prayers answered Review: At last,a wonderful story spun from a celtic tale as old as time. Juliet delivers to us forest dwellers a heroine worthy of our heritage. Sorsca is enchanting as our hearts go out to her and what she is willing to do for love. I was engulfed from page one because I felt like this was my story told in hindsight. Full of emotions almost too painful to bear at times, our imaginations could not foretell what was to happen. If I could only find my "Red", I would be a most happy person. A truly magical tale told with truth and courage. And if you are wondering, there are others like Sorsca out here.
Rating: Summary: Slow, but intriguing fantasy Review: For those who believe Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time is slow, you've got to read this book. The pace is positively glacial. From pages 80-300 virtually NOTHING happens. There's tons of character development, but at points it's extremely dull. Marillier shows a lot of promise. She understands how a book is supposed to work. The amount of time she puts into her characters bodes well for future efforts. Frankly though, this book isn't very notable. I actually put the book down when I was 60 pages into it and thought 'Haven't I read this before?'. There's nothing strikingly original about the plot but if you take the time to slog through it all it reaches a satisfactory denoument. This book is aimed squarely at female readers. It's got a distinctly Merecedes Lackey-feel to it. If you like your fantasy chock-full of unrequited love and loaded with coming-of-age plots, check this one out.
Rating: Summary: Brilliant Review: I read Daughter of the Forest months ago and have waited in eager anticiaption for her next, and I believe equally enticing second book, Son of the Shadows. I am not sure what it is exactly about both of these books that so draws me in, but I seem to find myself totally engrossed through out each of the stories and most often than not I read and read without being able to put the books down! I find myself quite often sitting with tears streaming down my face feeling each bit of pain or each tiding of joy that meets these remarkable heroines. The author seems to have an inaliable ability to take you deep within her stories so that you feel surrounded by the words and almost know them as your own....I do not usually sit weeping when I read a book and I can not say what touches me so deeply about her writing but I think she is marvelous and I certainly hope she writes more and quickly too.....Beautifully crafted, BRAVO!!!
