Rating: Summary: Science Fiction Space Opera / Saga in the Grandest Sense... Review: This is a book that most people will love and few people will think is wholly silly. It is the classic struggle of good vs. evil set in a post-apolcalyptic future where the human race has been reduced to a few ragged villages in remote locations. The odds against the hero cannot concievably be any higher than set out in this story, and the only reason the book is as enjoyable as it manages to be is the detail and time it takes for our hero (Johnny GOODBOY Tyler, of course) to turn the odds on a villain that makes Darth Vader seem downright personable.
Yes, it is addictive. No, it is not realistic. However, everyone loves to root for the underdog, and the only way you can accomplish this is to not stop reading, which is just what you will likely do with this book. A magnificent work within the fantasy/space opera grand genre, a la Star Wars.
Rating: Summary: A view of our future, written over 30 years ago. Review: Banking planet/Water Planet/Mining planet/Labor planet; Does this sound familiar. A look at the global economy ahead simiulated through the universal economy. THis book is way ahead of its time, even by todays standards. I have no use for reading the Dianetics, but battlefield earth is a great look at the the now and the future economy to come
Rating: Summary: A flawed formula book Review: I just couldn't get into this book. Hubbard tried everything (except interesting dialogue and believable characters) to keep my interest, but failed. I was mildly amused by the Earth-centric nationalism (humans are nice, aliens are evil), but was baffled by the lapses of internal consistency. Example: an indestructable aircraft that could withstand multiple direct hits by thermonuclear devices but was disabled by one man with a socket wrench. Things that make you go 'hmmm'. Sometimes you CAN judge a book by its cover..
Rating: Summary: Great Old Fashioned Sci Fi at it's Best Review: This is the only book I've ever had withdrawl symptoms from the day after reading it. The book is 1066 pages long (yes i even remember that) and took three evenings to finish, the next morning I wandered in a daze for hours wanting more excitement. From start ot finish this book bristles with non stop action as our hero gains in knowledge and so power over his collosal captors. the ending is one of the most satisfying in all of writing. be advised if you like sci-fi you are giving up days of your life, because you won't put it down
Rating: Summary: Perfect in every way Review: I usually don't read sci-fi , but when i saw this book in the store, the title spoke to me. Set in the year 3000 on Earth gives way to all kinds of ideas which Hubbard uses to make this story the absolute best it can be. I could not stop reading this book with 1000+ pages, each page filled with more situations and conflicts than I thought possible. Action packed and thrilling
Rating: Summary: Do not let preconcieved notions of the author scare you away Review: One word of caution from the start-- Do not start this book if you plan on eating sleeping or working at all in the time that it will take you to read the 1060 or so pages in this book. Please set aside any prejudices you may have toward Scientology, Dianetics or anything else you may have connected to the name "L. Ron Hubbard." The story takes place 1000 years in Earth's future. Man has become himself, an endangered spieces due to an invasion of an Alien race. If the reader looks closely enough at the "Psyclos", he will find many of the baser elements which are found in human society. The aliens are rude, avaricious, egotistical and regard all who are not like them to be animals. Hubbard also takes a few shots at the legal and banking professions in his saga. In "Battlefield Earth" the Universe's bankers are a race called the Selachees. Their home planet is called Snautch (just remove one letter) and he makes it a point to advise the reader that the race of bankers is evolved from sharks.
He uses subltle plot twists and a dry sense of humor to keep the reader interested through the 100= pages of the book. This is a "must read" for any die hard science fiction fan
Rating: Summary: A well written, keep your attention Sci-Fi Novel. Review: If youre looking for a Sci-Fi novel that you will want to read more than once then this is it. It takes you through the story of mankinds reserrection from destruction by an alien race. It shows that even against the most difficult of odds man has the ultimate need for survival and freedom. The hero Johnny Goodboy Tyler grows from a young cocky teenager into a man with a thirst for survival and knowledge.
Rating: Summary: The best sci-fi book I've ever read! Review: The best, most re-readable book I've ever read. My hardback copy is about 900 pages, but it is over all too soon. Perfect pace, perfect timing, wonderful characters and hardly any fluffy prose. This is action-packed science fiction. Please read and enjoy
Rating: Summary: Sci-Fi at its best Review: A massive work of genius. Hubbard has taken Earth and created a planet that
sincerely belongs to him and him only. No other author could write such pure
and powerful science fiction.
Johnny Tyler Goodboy is a very believable hero in an unbelievable world.
Terl is as vicious a villian as has ever appeared in the genre.
I highly recommend the reader take the time to read this massive work.
The time is well spent.
Rating: Summary: A MUST READ!!!! Review: BEST SCI-FI BOOK EVER!! I am an avid reader of science fiction, and love anything about the future. This book shows how our own curiousity could cause our demise, and what might happen if we encounter a superior race. What I really like about the book, is that it shows the power of the human race's instinct of survival. We overcome the tremendous opposition, and evently triumph. Another point I love about this book is that it then continues, and tells you what happens NEXT. If you like science fiction at all put this one at the very top of your list of must reads!!
