Rating: Summary: Pulp sci-fi. No other way to describe it. Review: I had to force myself to read half of this book. I thought it was boring and predictable. It got to the point where I was thinking to myself, this is what this or that character is going to do, say, or think next. What a waste of time reading this pulp fiction. 2 stars is too high, but really, 1 star is too low - give it a star and a half.
Rating: Summary: A visionary adventure, but not essential Review: I borrowed the audio cassette version of this for a road trip. I'm 29 and male, and have read a lot of science fiction. I thought the story was thought-provoking, the characters more-or-less flat, the plot a bit inconsistent, and more fiction than science. Jonnie Tyler's character is only hinted at, as were his motivations. The plot is pretty interesting for perhaps the first third, then tries to move quickly, but results in bogging down. Jonnie enlists the aid of the Scots to overthrow the Psychlos, but there is not a lot of background given to the Scots. At one point, a Scot helps out at a conference with a savvy knowledge of banking. Given that Earth has been forcibly occupied for 1000 years, and that humans were living in small bands, that seemed to ring a bit false. Still, the pulp novel feel of the story was pretty engrossing. It really did not need to be so long however. For a great Science Fiction story try Piers Anthony's "Split Infinity" (my favorite). Other authors I like are Jack Vance and Robert Jordan.
Rating: Summary: Top Class Science Fiction with lots and lots of surprizes Review: This was my first Hubbard book and it really took me along with hurricane! Once started one can never put it down till the last page, though few of the portion towards the end of the book became bit boring, but the pace and the excitement continued. This book is a combination of SF, Adventure, Politics & diplomacy, wonderfully knitted in 1000+ saga. A must for SF readers.
Rating: Summary: The ALL TIME GREATEST sci-fi novel ever written Review: I make a point of reading Battlefield Earth atleast once a year, and after 11 times, it STILL amazes me every time. If you like science fiction mixed with hilarious social comentary, you'll LOVE this book. Between it, and Mission Earth, (a 10 book series also by Hubbard), he has the genre in a choke hold!!!! Read this book, or miss out on the reading of a lifetime. And read it yearly, or you're missing out on the GREATEST book ever
Rating: Summary: The best single-book science fiction work ever!!! Review: I have read a lot of science fiction, and believe me this is the best. While some may shy away from Mr. Hubbard because of his philosophical underpinnings, this book does not try to persuade one to his point of view. It is merely a wonderful spiel- captivating from the first sentence to the last. In his own words this is "...pure science fiction."
Rating: Summary: I've read the book twice and plan to read it again! Review: This book is the best book I've ever read. It had a GREAT storyline, lots of suspense, and over 1,000 pages. Once you pick the book up you can't put it down. Some of Hubbard's thoughts are truly encredible and right when I finished it I wanted to read it again. It is a great book to buy.
Rating: Summary: One of the top 5 SF works of all time Review: As an avid Science Fiction (or more correctly, Speculative Fiction) reader and fan (as well as aspiring writer), I can definitively place Battlefield Earth in the "Top 5 of all time" category of major works of Science Fiction. This book is a vast tale of adventure and an uplifting story of triumph over evil against tremendous odds - a characteristic (in my opinion) of the best sort of Sci Fi. Too much modern SF has a cynical and rather pessimistic view of mankind and the future. You will find that most of the Golden Age "Grand Masters" of SF, contemporaries of Hubbard, (such as Isaac Asimov, Frederick Pohl, Ray Bradbury, A.E. Van Vogt, Robert Heinlein, etc.) generally ended their stories with an optimistic bent on mankind's future - so too with this work. There are other similarities to the writers of the Golden Age. I like "broad canvas space" opera. The plot of Battlefield Earth is played out against a backdrop of intergalactic proportions, reminiscent of E.E. "Doc" Smith's "Lensman" series, Isaac Asimov's "Foundation" series and other seminal works of Science Fiction from the Golden Age of SF. Hubbard's early days as a pulp fiction writer (where stories were often published in pieces over a few monthly issues of a pulp mag) is clearly reflected in the writing style - a compelling story line and non-stop action/adventure that keeps you turning the pages at a feverish pace, trying to find out what's going to happen to the hero, Johnny Goodboy Tyler. At the same time, I especially liked Hubbard's premise for the way in which the aliens found Earth in the first place - from the Voyager I space probe! A very intuitive view of potential dangers in broadcasting our presence to the universe - if evil alien powers are indeed lurking about looking for technologically backward races (ie. Humans) to enslave. This book is a tremendous read, and an obligatory part of any serious SF fan's library. I think it has had a profound impact on many current and up and coming SF writers, both in its style and scope. It especially begs the question - what would happen if, instead of the humans beating back the aliens as in the movie "Independence Day", the tables were turned? I believe any reader will thoroughly enjoy this book. I consider it an unqualified SF masterpiece, and give it a resounding 5 stars.
Rating: Summary: It's a pretty good book. I liked it. Review: The book's beginning was very interesting and I thought that part was the best of the book, except for the end. It had action and adventure in it that I liked, but it also had some boring descriptions and I got lost on the part where he made the pods in Psychlo's heads go onto a metal plate. Other then that though, I thought it was a very interesting book. This is my first book by Hubbard, and I'll make sure I read some more of his. :)
Rating: Summary: Battlefield Earth a masterpiece!! Review: The news that Battlefield Earth is now being made into a movie could not be more welcome. I've been an enthusiast of L. Ron Hubbard's novels and stories for many years, and have always regarded Battlefield Earth as his masterpiece, a crowning work of science fiction and imaginative storytelling.
Rating: Summary: Read historic science fiction Review: Battlefield Earth in truly one of the best science fiction novels of the 20th Century. L. Ron. Hubbard is a wordmaster, so that language flows and so do the images. A good read.
